1993 LD Boxset commentary subtitles (english)
Time

Hi everyone,

I’m currently working on the “1993 LD commentaries” subtitles of the Original Trilogy available on the analog track of the 1993 LD boxset, for me first as I’m french & I’d like, waiting for 30 years, to be at last able to understand what all the persons say.
But, second, I will give them to the community here…
CatBus’ advice was to creta a new thread, so we don’t mix the subjects

They’re based on the analog tracks I ripped 30 years ago + the 3 Harmy’s movies for the synchronization, so my subtitles files will follow the version of harmy’s files.
Ex : Episode IV’s version is v2.7, so the subtitles will be v2.7.x

It was a work-in-progress 30 years ago, then abandoned as I couldn’t do better.
And I’m happy to thank here Fred, a friend of mine who uses the AI “whisper”, and CatBus who corrected by ear a lot of mistakes on the two 1st subtitles, who help me finish the transcriptions & fill in the numerous blanks I have.

Then I had to :

  • synchronise them with the audio commentaries timestamps
  • correct some errors –> if you see some others, don’t hesitate to correct them & tell me !
  • add the name & title of the person speaking
  • add the timestamp of the next subtitle
plus maybe other things I don’t remember.

So yes, any error should be reported so I can correct & update the subtitles on my google drive.

I hope some of you will enjoy to have these 3 files & finally be able to understand better what all these persons involved in doing Star Wars at the time are saying…

For the people who would like to have the “native” audio commentary file, without the dialogs between, here it is :

Episode VI should be available soon here 😉

Hi,

1st : THANK YOU VERY MUCH for your help !
I sometimes laughed a lot at my mistakes after reading your answers !!!

Also, this may work better as another thread, if there are many more questions. I wasn’t imagining that we’d be hashing out dialogue here, just sharing links.

I completely agree - how can I do it please ?
Maybe 3 threads for the 3 movies ?

Hi everyone,

I fell last week on smthg strange in “ROTJ” LD 1993 commentaries, contained in “Harmy’s ROTJ v3.1”…

  • around 01:39:39, there’s a Ken Ralston commentary beginning, but it seems that it lacks some words before…

  • and it seems to appear also around 02:01:11, with a much longer introduction.

  • MY side4-bonus.wav file (ripped 30 years ago…) has flaws, and i don’t have the beginning of the Ken Ralston @01:39:39 commentary,

  • in MY side5-bonus.wav file, I don’t have any commentary at 02:01:11

So could anyone having the 1993 laserdisc boxset check what we really have at these timestamps, please ?

Hi everyone,

I’m glad to post here The Empire Strikes Back 1993 audio commentaries from The Definitive Collection LDs :

As before, as there are quite a few moments when I don’t really understand what is said, please feel free to tell me when you can correct what I have written !!!

Here below are the different parts I think that are incorrect :

  • 1st commentary starting @ [00:00:19] :
–…Far beyond, I thought that we didn’t want to be done in Star Wars…
–…have a lot of people in the shots where it was in Star Wars…
  • 2nd commentary :
–…So every frame at a time so that we could…
–…all the camera shakes from the helicopter
–…not going to be shot at Tauntaun
  • 3rd commentary :
–…ships are going so fast that they are transparent…
  • 4th commentary :
–…based on what the background plates were doing…
  • 5th commentary :
–…I don’t think everyone would have moved (them) very well…
–…on that snow that you see is baking powder
  • 7th commentary :
    –…they looked like hovercraft
–…injured or had something give it a shot
–…So we went to baking soda
–…Mark runs away from his snowspeeder or nothing was in the shot
–…and then mat that over it…
    –…basically all cartoon animation…
–…behind a hill as it gets close to an object cast a shadow on it
  • 8th commentary :
–…Leading to dig above the ship…
–…to make the painted blue sections on R2 D2 read his blue
  • 9th commentary :
–…and luckily it got by George and (?), …
–…you might see a potato flying by (the ?) camera…
–…I think they’re the point of view “looking out through the cockpit” pass on, and everybody, as they’re staring straight ahead, some of those asteroids or potatoes…
    –…its rocket passes…
    –…it does this barrel roll…
    –…as it comes by camera…
–…you can’t see any of the garbage mats
    –…like lights and century stands
–…some of the backgrounds of the asteroids had a large “asteroid box”…
  • 10th commentary :
–…into these blue pylons mounted into it (???) against a blue screen…
–…we hung some little miniature goblety-gook like swamp vines …
–…this model and matted (???) in Luke …
  • 11th commentary :
–…I actually gave both the assignment…
    –…make him tall…
–…I think we have bringing versions… (green ?)
  • 12th commentary :
–…bodies and any (???) proportion of what you grow up (???)…
–…a very odd look that wouldn’t be put off-ish
  • 13th commentary :
    –…and Gary Kurtz (???), producer, the “price drags back” (???) I believe…
  • 15th commentary :
–…espousing philosophy at one point in the end, …
    –…I don’t know if that’s the found (???),…
    -16th commentary :
–…usually it was in the slate or before the slate
–…we were on the night ship …
  • 17th commentary :
–…that Frank do it, talk to Frank…
–…with it in a very fastened sort of way…
  • 18th commentary :
    –…since I’m baggabond…
–…I thought it looked ??? on me in the film…
–…which lay them in very white pale…
  • 19th commentary :
–…I’m not trying to get to it because I’m going to get to it.
  • 21st commentary :
–…that Brian Johnson shot sunset cloud pieces …
    –…Just joined by these strange…
–…to shoot multiple passes even on our color light passes …
    –…And it was just a chore …
    –…made out of plywood …
    –…have a fork lift …
    –…And John Van Blee …

Hi,

so here is the last “1993 LD commentaries” for A New Hope :
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1bWGEqUR72T7Krz8joaTKUJJjP95NLiGB/view?usp=drive_link
(v2.7 refers to the Harmy video file)
if I modify later my subtitle file, I’ll add a version like v2.7-1

For the people who would like to have the “native” audio commentary file, without the dialogs between, here it is :

Hello !

thank you very much, it’s more logical indeed ! 😉
–> Could it be “when” instead of “where” ?

I have 2 other issues :
1/ after [00:47:00] : “…all kinds of bandle ears of ammunition…”
–> is it "bundle ?

2/ after [01:48:54] : “And that would be our background plate, we would base everything else on. Into that, we probably…”
–> could it be “… else on into that, we probably …” ?

Hello,
ok, but I think that if I don’t choose the right web site, the link won’t last forever, will it ?
so, on which web site should I store the srt file please ?

Forever is a long time! Google drive, Mega, hosting sites like that are popular. But nothing lasts forever, and I have to periodically refresh my links as hosting services come and go.

Hello everyone,

I’m glad to share with you the Star Wars (Episode IV) Audio Commentaries subtitles from the 1993 LD Definitive Collection, available here :
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1wgepfKheRV2UphD8OxAjmMLNK-3SLPW4/view?usp=drive_link

As it’s the 1st time I’m sharing smthg with google drive, please excuse me in advance if it doesn’t work !

It was a work-in-progress 30 years ago, then abandoned as I couldn’t do better, and I finally finished it, thanx to Fred, a friend of mine who used “whisper” to help me finish the transcription & fill in the numerous blanks I had.

  • correct some errors –> if you see some others, don’t hesitate to correct them & tell me !
  • add the name & title of the person speaking
  • add the timestamp of each next subtitle
plus maybe other things I don’t remember.

So yes, any error should be reported so I can correct & update the subtitle on google drive.
NOTA : I created a .ass file so I can put italic format to introduce the person speaking.

I’m starting right now the ESB (Episode V) Audio Commentaries subtitles from the 1993 LD Definitive Collection.

I hop some of you will enjoy to have this file & finally be able to understand better what all these persons involved in doing Star Wars are saying…

Hi,
would it be possible to know what are the differences between the following english subtitles, please :

  • eng-full (I presume that ALL texts are subtitled, even the titles & the crawl)
  • eng-native
  • eng-mono-native
  • eng-template

I could compare them, and probably would find differences, but my question is in fact mainly smthg like “are they provided by different (movie) sources & if so, which ones ? Or are they just different extractions from the ‘full’ subtitle ?”
From what I saw, I think that :

  • “native” are the original subtitles, without all english texts already seen in the movie (at the very beginning, Greedo’s sentences…)
  • “sdh-native” adds all the sounds (like the ones done by R2D2) to “native”
  • “titles” = the very beginning + Greedo
  • “nocrawl” = “native” + Greedo
  • “full” = “native” + titles

so I’m wondering what are the different origins of :

  • full Vs template (“full” seems more precise than “template”)
  • native Vs mono-native (“mono-native” seems better/more precise than “native”)

You can certainly share your commentary subtitles here or in their own thread, but I won’t incorporate commentary subtitles into this project. While the scope of this project has grown to include all sorts of A/V variations, for my own sanity, I have to draw the line at commentaries and special editions.

Hi,

ok I’ll do that
What do I have to do precisely please ? Just post the srt file as an attached file in a post ?

being on the Death Star since if the Rebel fleet was unexpectedly successful quickly, Luke could be blown to bits! Furthermore, I’m pleased that you’re doing color correction since Vader’s saber looked godawful in the 2004 DVDs. Are you deleting the Jabba music number with Jedi Rocks?

is your AOTC edit or V1 (with no ewoks whatsoever) of the ROTJ edit still online somewhere? If so, can you please PM me the links?

Yeah, the biggest change is probably moving Luke off of the Death Star. Being there makes his story totally meaningless. Think about it, Luke has no effect on whether the rebels are successful, so theoretically they would have succeeded at blowing it up no matter what. So if Luke turned to the dark side, died, or never even showed up the ending would’ve been the same: The Emperor and Vader are dead, and the Rebellion wins. I don’t know about you, but I like my main characters to be involved in the plot. See Indiana Jones 4 for a similar problem.

Hi,

I know you discussed this point 10 years ago, but i just discovered this Spence Cut a few weeks ago, and i’d like to share my feelings :
Luke went to Darth Vader in the hope to save him.
The fact that they’re on the Death Star makes me feel that he has to hurry to do so (or at least to save his neck) BEFORE it blows up
So there are 2 questions the viewer can ask himself during the final duel :

  • will he have time to flee before the explosion ? As he’s the hero, we should think YES so it doesn’t bring much suspens,
  • will he have time to/will he succeed in saving his father ? It’s a more difficult question to answer, which brings THE suspens to the sequence (IMHO)

And I don’t see what Luke, being on a Star Destroyer, can do more to help the Rebels, than being on the Death Star…

For me, the main Rebel goal is to kill the Emperor, more than to destroy this new Death Star - because if the emperor still lives after the explosion, he’ll be able to create an other one once again (they don’t know that Vader will kill him, or if luke will be able to defeat him…).
So it’s more logical that the characters are on the Death Star than on a Star Destroyer, so the Rebels are there to try to kill the emperor.

That being said, I found this cut much more serious, “adult” (like ANH in fact, where only C3PO was “funny”), so better than the original one !
I was suprised not to see the rancor scenes, where we see that a Jedi can’t do nothing against this sort of beast, & so that even Luke can be afraid for his life…

best regards from France 😉

Are you talking about the DVD Commentary Subs? Those are forced subtitles that are meant to be used with the DVD Audio Commentary track. They just show who is talking at each point in the commentary. They are present on the DVDs.

I also included full English and Spanish subtitles for the actual commentary as well. The English Commentary subs were on the British versions of the DVDs, but not on the R1 American releases.

Hello !

I’d like to say that from all I read this is a MARVELOUS work, and can’t imagine the amount of time needed !!!

I have a request : would it be possible to send me JUST these 2004/2006 DVD English Commentary subs please (as I already have the audio track) ?
I can try to send you the french version, as I have the french DVD if you want (I just have to remember how to do it…) ?

No idea where I could find the 1993 LD english commentary subs please ?*

EDIT :
I should be able to have the 2004/2006 DVD English & French commentary subs in a few days from the BD.
There’s also an “archive 2004 commentary” on the BD that I’ll try to get also (audio + eng/fr subs), so if someone is interested…

kind regards

Hi,

I found this thread very fascinating and i have 2 questions :

  • I read just above (but also somewhere else that i don’t remember) “GOUT”, but as I’m french, I don’t understand it - what is it please ?
  • didn’t anybody create the subtitles for the commentaries ? I started to try & write the ANH ones nearly 30 years ago using my LD at the time, but it was too hard for me, & never finished the job…
