A Goofy Movie - 4K HDR10 - DTS 2.0 HD-MA and DTS-X

We are of the opinion that the film should be properly restored again in 4K from its original camera negative (even if the original capture method was flawed) and its original 4.1 (encoded as 5.1) sound mix should be able to easily be expanded to Atmos or 5.1/7.1 without the use of AI technology.

While the director and sound mixer are happy with that restoration, we are now able to go far beyond what was accomplished at that time.

Do they still retain the negative to allow for a true 4k restoration? If that’s the case then I agree.

during that time grew from just a team of two to a larger team - and have moved into higher grade restoration software - and are now capable of going farther beyond what was done in the 2022 Goofy project. We look forward to announcing several other projects we have been involved with when the distributors allow.

Huh, I wonder if that implies further work could be done to improve upon the Goofy cleanup… either way I hope the talks stay positive and result in an official endorsement/release of this project.

I’m curious as to why the burned in Elvish subtitles are gone. Are there plans to have player generated subtitles when Part 2 is available?

Whenever part 2 is released, it’ll be fairly simple to mux any missing audio/subs either as a uniform cut or one that mirrors the separate retail disc releases.

Troy (2004) Director's Cut - 4K Filmized Remaster with neutral color grading (released)
Time

I wonder how a 4k restoration will be treated… the theatrical edition features an original score which was modified for the extended director’s cut unfortunately. What the DC got: “The score of the film was changed dramatically, with many of the female vocals being cut. An addition to the music is the use of Danny Elfman’s theme, from Tim Burton’s Planet of the Apes (2001), during the pivotal fight between Hector and Achilles in front of the Gates of Troy.”

Got another of those waffle? 😃 Based on what DrDre said about the quality of the theatrical blu-rays vs the extended (EE, shadows) and those who have seen both projects, is there a visual difference in quality or is extended just as good now for the first movie?

Sent! His EE 4k upscale looks quite good. I would even say it looks better than the official 4k release. The main drawback that I see is black crush where detail is noticeable in the retail 4k release (dark areas still retaining detail) which doesn’t come through in the upscale. However maybe the revised release will find a way around this or compensate better for it.

Would be cool if you created a custom color grade that toned down the piss filter.

You mean a neutral colle grading ? Might check that out but as a separate master then.

Yep, ever since the advent of digital color grading, not only do modern movies constantly receive these unnatural grades, but even older movies suffer from grading revisionism as you’ve shown. Real shame too because the color grading is an important art that seems to be abused with digital tools these days.
