Overall, it kicked ass. Cut some slack here guys. It was good. It felt right.

now turn your head & cough...............for all the many people who have only seen the movies, using the excuse of the cartoons books, etc to fill large logical holes carries about as much weight as "creative decision". Why can't we all agree that it is sloopy work and stop trying to find excuses for it.........

thats my rant for now, 4 1/2 hours in line in the back woods of maine, got home 3:30am and at work at 7am....still feeling annoyed at getting snooked by GL.....not even the promise explanation of lightsaber color changes alluded to when "fixs" where mentioned discussions of dvd mistakes

My 2 cents releasing the OT on DVD
Time
is the jessica lang version of king kong better than the 1933 version because it has better effects......what about the remake of psycho, dial m for murder("a perfect murder" w/ paltrow), nosferateu vs dracula w/ bela vs coppola's dracula,....Do we no longer watch the movies such as Flash Gordon Serials, all the great Sinbad movies, or even more recently films such as Raiders of the lost arc (most of the snakes were quite silly)......would you rather have harrison have had the sword fight as originally scripted & remove him shooting the swordsman in the square & removing a classic piece of movie history? These movies are a time capsule from the era in which they were produced. Updating them to match the moment is a slippery road that can never be maintained & destroys the context which is what made these movies so important at the time that they were recognized as the best that there was when compared to their peers. Even Ted Turner came to recognize this fact(the master of colorazation) who now campions the clasic movie form thru his turner classic movie channel. Uninterupted, wide screen presentations with commentary at the begining & end to help viewers understand why the movie was the way it was. The original dracula was shot in 6 weeks with the english version shot during the day, & spanish at night. Does this rushed, low budget approach ruin the film?

How is it possible to understand how ground breaking a movie was when you can't even see it the way those original viewers/critics saw it. A "special edition" loses all context when you have nothing to compare it against.

Time
there was a time when they played with the video levels so that when copying the video level would drop below the threshold that the copyiny device could handle. This gimmick was quite easy to see when the signal was run through a time base corrector with a video meter attachment. When we used to do corparate event & project them on a 20' screen for a meeting, it would drive the projectors crazy. It became standard practice to include a time base corrector with the rental of all non live video feeds at a cost $225 plus the cost of the projector rental $1200 per day. (As background, i worked in philadelphia in the 80's & 90's doing large indoor & outdoor events/concerts for crowds up to 70,000 people at a time) This gimmick was not used on all prerecorded video & seemed to have predated the more formal version that became macrovision. My current vcr proscan 84 has this circuitry included & allows me to copy from all video sources including the matrix DVD.

It's become a pinball game
Time
First a bit of background..........a long time ago, in a place far far away(1984 to be exact)...i had an uncle....I was in college & he was a colonel in the Air Force Inspector generals office in germany, endowed with a personality to insure a rapid career rise. He had serveral times called out the mp's on me. THat winter I plotted my revenge. He had a son 9 & daughter 7, which was a very important part of the plan, their unwitting acceptance of my gift would drive him crazy & there would be nothing he could do about it. It took 2 weeks of hunting, but i finally found it. On christmas day they opened it & were utterly transfixed. It was a table top pinball game, with lots of shiny packaging, blinking lights & most imporant of all, 3 speakers that blared out a endless & annoying stream of beeps, whistles, wails, & general nonsense. It took 8 d batteries & ran for hours. Uncle still hasn't forgiven me. (i also included a 16 pack of batteries in EACH of their stocking)
Fast forward to yesterday. I load in episode 4 & start skipping around. Imagine my surprise when i didn't find my uncles name on the credits. I figured he had finally gotten his revenge upon me. The soundtrack that was as much of a actor as anything on the screen had benn mutilated.
I have played in numerous orchestras, had bought the soundtrack album when it first came out(first record i ever bought with my own money). I worked 7 years runing sound boards for live shows/concerts/theater out of philadelphia, installed some of the first home theater systems from yamaha/adcom/snell and later THX. So the changes in the sound track were quite glaring. It's not just the additions that everyone is talking about. What i found so offense was the almost total subserviance of the soundtrack to the gag(aka special effects) reel that had now userped it. Anyone who has seen that laserdisc that thx put out for you to align your system ha watch the 10min or so walkthru of the importance of sound balance/foley that was on the "B" side of the disc. A scene from a indiana jones movie was taken & each layer of sound was explained & added on one at a time until finished. Anyone who thinks that the music is just so much wall paper, should rewatch this & the raw scenes with darth vader before the music is added.
What we have with this release is that old pinball game, very pretty, shiny, & full of lots of noise. THe kids love it and stare at us when we complain. In the back of my mind I can hear my uncle laughing
