Clone Wars Animated Fan Edit (Updated)--Watch 1st Five Minutes

any words on this? I'm interested to see how this turns out.

This project is temporarily oh hold.  I'm too busy with school right now and I ran into several technical hurdles in my earlier edit attempts.  I think I've gotten past most of them, but I'm new to fan editing so I'm sure they'll be more.   So whenever I reengage I'll be starting from scratch.  I'm also working on another edit which is almost complete.  It'll be the first edit I officially release and I want to get some feedback on it, before I tackle The Clone Wars.  I really want to get these right in full spirit of what Star Wars was originally meant to be.

I also just finished watching season 3, which will have an big impact on the order I originally envisioned for the movies.  I still want to tackle this, but it'll be the first of the year before I get the chance.  Thanks to everyone who has shown interest so far and for all your suggestions.  My goal is to put out at least 3 or 4 feature length films next year.  I'll get back to you all at the beginning of the year...

Info & Ideas: ESB and ROTJ Wishlist
Time

Luke's entire inner conflict in ROTJ is that he has now discovered Vader is his father and that has stirred a deep emotional conflict within him, a conflict that wasn’t present when he first faced Vader in ESB.  Then, he faced Vader looking for retribution because he believed Vader killed his father.  Luke also realizes that this was the wrong reason to face Vader and thus ensured his defeat.  Sure Luke went out to try and save his friends, but it’s that attachment and his desire for revenge that ultimately leads to his defeat.  It’s during this conflict and that Luke comes closest to turning to the dark side, because he has yet to learn how to control his anger and put his attachment in the proper context.

Now Luke knows the whole truth.  Luke knows what great hero Anakin once was and wants to see his father redeemed, not destroyed.  This emotional conflict is also present for Vader as well and I can’t help thinking that in his duel in ROTJ he might have been holding back, truly not wanting to destroy Luke.

I know almost everyone will disagree with this, but I really don’t think look turns to the dark side at all in ROTJ.  To this point Luke has learned some tough lessons.  He’s seen how rash action dominated by selfish emotions have actually hurt his friends.  He has learned to put his attachments in the proper context, yet he has not abandoned them.  They have now become his motivation and strength rather than a weakness to be exploited.

So, In the moment Vader threatens Leia I think Luke realizes that all his attempts at diplomacy with Vader have been exhausted, and it’s in this moment he realizes he will have to fight to protect the ones he loves—his first stand against the dark side will begin with confronting his father.  I think his battle cry was an emotional release of all this frustration and an expression that he will not go down without a fight.  He is finally taking a stand in the right place, at the right time for the right reasons.  It’s in this moment I think that he truly becomes a Jedi.  This is his test—his trials.  Therefore it’s not anger or hate that motivates his attack; it is actually duty and ultimately love.

Anger in and of itself isn’t necessarily bad, it’s when one give oneself over to anger to fulfill selfish desires that it becomes a negative emotion.   Ultimately the dark side is about the acquisition of power over another.  It is a selfish pursuit and anathema to what the Jedi stand for as public servants and protectors of peace.  Luke’s motivation here is not revenge, but a desire to redeem his father and protect those he cares for.

Luke’s reaction after he cuts off Vader’s hand is one of surprise at his own power.  It is also the fulfillment of the faith he put in the Force to see him through.  He now truly believes the light side is stronger, that victory is attainable and he will be the instrument the Force uses to restore his father.  Look at the confidence he has afterword.  He doesn’t care if Palpatine kills him of not.  The internal struggle is over and he’s won.  He is a Jedi like his father before him.  He is a man that stands for justice and peace and will not be given over to his baser emotions and desires.  Furthermore, he has passed the test of temptation that his father failed, therefore becoming more powerful than him.  Even if Palpatine kills him, he will die a Jedi—not a Sith.  The shroud of the dark side has been lifted and the momentum of the moment is lending more and more power to the light side.  He is capable of destroying the emperor and Palpatine knows it.

Then, he demonstrates this new power and maturity by taking an incredible risk.  He disarms himself and takes a moral stand.  So strong is his faith in his father’s love and the light side of the Force for him that he’s willing to risk his life to prove it.  Love motivated him to protect those he loved through the measured application of force.  He is now challenging his father to do the same—to take the stand he should have taken many years before.

None of these actions are those of a person who even momentarily turns to the dark side.  They are measured and calculated.  Everything Luke does is in service to someone else—to someone he loves.  At no point does he seek power or revenge.   His attachments have given him the strength and will to protect those he loves and restore justice.   Its Luke’s love and faith that bring his father back from the dark side to destroy the emperor.

Idea: Indiana Jones WWII adventures?
Time

Had a thought yesterday, but I won’t tell you where I was when it came to me…

Harrison Ford stared in two movies set during WWII: Hanover Street and Force 10 From Navarone.

Could either of these be tweaked into Indiana Jones movies? HS is probably a lost cause, but Force 10 may have some potential.

I think it could be pulled off with some adjustment to dialogue and music.

Also add some of the Indy movies signature sounds effects. The only real problem is that both of these movies were made 10+ years before The Last Crusade so Harrison Ford looks considerably younger. Just a thought.

Tell me what you think.

I had this Idea a while back but deserted it cause I thought it was not worth it. Like you said there are a lot of good moments in the series, but so many are ruined by stupid, childish, idiotic (don't get me started), [opposite of] humor.

If you need help with anything you can PM me. I'll be more than willing to help you.

Thanks JustDC!  My biggest problem right now is figuring out the proper order for all the episodes.  That's now been complicated by the release of season 3.  So far its caused me to scratch what i was working on before (plus I figured out a better was to extract my masters from the blu rays).   Currently I'm compiling a list of episodes I want to do and their overall chronological order.  Maybe I'll run it by you when I'm done.  I think this can be done, its just going to take a lot of careful editing...

what are you sourcing from? i heard the dvd movie had a just  one channel for music, which would be handy if the series was the same.

I’m using the Blu Rays.  So far the primary dialogue and sound effects are on the center channel with the music and secondary sound effect on the right and left channels.

Fwarr. That may just tempt me to buy them!

Check this out, http://boards.theforce.net/live_action_clone_wars_classics/b10467/29754643/p1

They are trying to figure out the chronological order for many of the episodes. Could be good for B-storylines or longer arcs.

That's good info.  For some reason I just assumed the order on the Blu Rays/DVDs were correct.  You would think they would put the time in to get this right, but apparently not.

Funnily enough I actually like the droid humour.  I find it not as cringeworthy as the films actually.

I guess it wouldn't be a bad idea.  For the Opening Crawls however I wonder if taking the narrative lines at the start of every episode word for word might help?  Still I do love the quotes though....

That’s pretty much what I intend to do.  The opening narrative are just fine for describing what's going on.  I've made some minor tweeks.   I’m working on the crawls right now in After Effects.  I’ll post them as soon as I get them done—hopefully in a couple days.

BTW, this is completely off topic, but the "reply with quotes" option doesn't seem to work w/ IE 9.  Works fine w/ Firefox...

Clone Wars Animated Fan Edit (Updated)--Watch 1st Five Minutes
Time

Wow, I didn't even know we had a resident composer!  New themes are a great idea.  I'd love to have some consistant thems for the Trade Feds, Madaloreans, Techno Union, etc.

As I refine the rough cuts one of my goals will be to remove all the clumsey humor as much as possible.  I don't mind comic relief, but it has to be appropriate, well done and not overdone.  This will hopfully include most of the battle driod dialogue.  Their lines mostly don't work for me.  I want to give these edits as serious a tone as possible.

Clone Wars Animated Fan Edit (Updated)--Watch 1st Five Minutes
Time

So I got board one day and decided to watch a few of the Clone Wars animated series episodes and found myself pleasantly surprised at how good they were.  Not every episode is a jem, but there are several that are quite good.  Then the idea occurred that you could probably make several feature length episodes from some of the two and three episode arcs which is what I’m going to attempt.

So far I’m working on two edits from the following episodes:

The Clone Wars: Chap 2

MALEVOLENCE

Season 1 Episodes:

“Bombad Jedi”

“Shadows of Malevolence”

“Rising Malevolence”

“Destroy Malevolence”

The Clone Wars: Chap 3

THE SEIGE OF RYLOTH

“Ambush”
“Storm Over Ryloth”

“Innocent of Ryloth”
“Liberty on Ryloth”

I plan on putting together a traditional Star Wars crawl for each episode and I may replace some of the music to give it a more Star Wars film feel.

I have a rough cut of both edits done and I’m hoping to start work this weekend on cover art and DVD menus.  Both movies clock in right about 90 minutes.  I just completed an intro to Cinema 4D class so I may attempt some animated menus—we’ll see.

I very interested in hearing what other think about this project and of course any suggestions.

UPADATE*********************

Here is a draft of the first five minutes of Chapter 1.  The crawl stills needs some work along with some of the sound mix.  Enjoy.

Idea: a 'Flags of Our Fathers/Letters from Iwo Jima' Fan Edit...
Time

I’m not the first person to have this idea. I am planning a fan edit that combines Flags of our Fathers and Letters from Iwo Jima.

I’m also considering using about 5-10 minutes of footage from The Pacific.

I plan to structure the new film in chronological order covering the events from the beginning of the invasion until the end. They’ll be no flashbacks or character exposition after the battle. I may use a couple of the flashbacks as a prologue and I may use the monument dedication as an epilogue.

The movie ends w/ the Americans securing the island.

This a very basic structure of the film:

-introduce the Iwo defenders (Saigo and Kuibayashi)

-introduce the Marines at Camp Tarawa (Bradley, Gagnon, Hayes, etc)

-introduce the Marines at Camp Pendleton (Basilone and his MG unit)

-Kuribayashi sends Adm Ohsugi back to Japan and is informed of the fall of Saipan

-Marines train for the invasion and ship out

-The Japanese prepare their defenses

-bombing and shore bombardment of the island

-The initial invasion and Basilone’s death

-The assault on Mt. Suribachi

-Suicide in Mt. Suribachi

-the raising of the flag

-Saigo almost loses his head

-Nishi is blinded

-Suribachi survivors escape the American crossfire

-Saigo and Shimizu agree to and attempt surrender (Shimizu survives and it not shot by the Americans)

-Strank is killed in an ambush

-Kuribayashi leads the final assault and is wounded

-Bradley is wounded

-Kuribayashi’s death; Saigo captured

-Bradley at the aid station

-Saigo at the aid station

-roll credits

Please let me know your thought and suggestions.

Luke VS the Emperor- What if Vader hadn't been there?

Well, Luke was not there to kill the Emperor after all, he was there to meet his father. Lando and friends would have killed the Emperor in the end no matter what.

Wow, you're right.  I guess the setting would have to be moved too.

This is the statement I disagreed w/ earlier, i think i posted to the wrong entry.

I don't think it was a given Lando and Han would have succeeded, had the emporer not been killed.  The Empire still had a vast numericall superiority in the battle and they just seemed to come apart once Palpy died.  I mean one lone A-wing took out a super star destroyer.

I haven't wathed ROTJ in a while, but if memory serves the sheild generator was destroyed before Palpy died, but the destruction of the Executor and the superstructure attack all happened after he died.

Hmmm...   Maybe it was the Ewoks that Palpatine failed to underestimate?  They were the ones that turned the tide on Endor...  So the Ewoks saved the galaxy?!

So the Rebel victory was probably contigent on several factors.  Cheif among them the death of the emporer.  That's my story and I'm stickin' to it :)

Info & Ideas Wanted: for my Pearl Harbor/Tora Tora Tora Cut
Time

This cut has turned out to be very frustrating so far and now I'm starting over for the third time.  On the bright side I've aquired better software to use so I'm hoping to do a more high quality job.

I'm now using:

Vegas 9 - video/sound editing

AE CS4 - specail effects and color correction

This is my plan for now:

Color Correction: my biggest hurdle so far has been matching the color of TTT with PH and Jerry B's color pallete and filters.  I'm now using after effects and I'm hoping I'll be able to match the grain and color sceme of PH.  I'm brand new to Affect Effects so any pointers would be welcome.  I also have the red giant add-on pack.

Special Effects:

After (if) I'm able to get the color correction right I'll move on to updating the few battle scenes i'm keeping from TTT (i.e. the USS Hood attacking the sub, B-17's landing during the attack, ect).  I plan on adding bigger and more dynamic explosions, tracers, muzzle flashed and selective camera shake to better match the action in PH.

I also would like to find a way to remove and redo the subtitles, but they are imbedded on the the film and very tedious photoshop and rotoscopining are the only way I know to remove them.  Anyone have any advice?

Sound: The sound for TTT is 4.1.  I've been able to separate the wave files, but the sound separation isn't true at all.  I'm finding that I'll need to rework most of the sound for all TTT scenes to give it a true 5.1 feel.  Also, the planes sound very different in TTT vs PH so I've downloaded new sounds to better match PH, but i'm finding replacing these sound to be very tedious.

If anyone has advice to help with any of this it would be much appreciated.  I'd alos like to see if anyone is willing to tackle some cover art for me...

Info & Ideas Wanted: for my Pearl Harbor/Tora Tora Tora Cut
Time

I remeber watching Pearl Harbor and being both amazed and nauseous.  Amazed at the special effects and attention to detail during most of the battle scenes and nauseated at the love story, the screenplay and the dumbed down revisionist history portrayed in the film.

For me (and other I suspect) Tora, Tora, Tora–from a historical perspective–has been the definitive and favored version of the events of Pearl Harbor on film, but the battle scenes and special effects were generally pretty cheesy even for its time.  So the idea occured to me what if these two movies could be effectively combined into one cohesive story?  This is my first large scale attempt at a fan edit.

I’ve generally cut out all the story of PH and used only the battle scenes.  So most of the story is told using TTT until the attack begins.  I’ve kept a couple key battle scenes from TTT (such as the B-17s attempting to land during the attack and the sub attack), but generlly most of the battle scenes are from PH.

I also discovered that TTT has very little background music so iv’e tried to add in several Hans Zimmer soundtracks to help with consistancy.  I discovered that the PH soundtrack and The Last Samuri soundtrack are nearly identical.

I have used the DVD release of TTT and the director’s cut DVD release of PH.  I’m using Vegas 6 for video editing and FXHome to modify the few battle scenes i’m keeping from TTT.  Nothing extreme, just adding a few more explosions, tracers, muzzle flashes, etc.

I’m interested in any opinions or advice anyone has and I’d love to upload some clips if someone will point me in the right direction…

Thanks,

J
