General Star Wars Random Thoughts Thread
Time

It sucks. Though on the subject of his relation to Star Wars, from my discussions with Jake, he seems mixed on Star Wars. Like I don't think he has any inherent hatred of Star Wars. He absolutely is in love with Knight of the Old Republic, and holds a great respect for Lucas. I think it's more the prequel hate and the interviews that get weird and negative he's sick of. Star Wars itself though, I don't think dislikes. He even seems quite fond of it and the community, if you get what I'm saying. He really, really hates that interview everyone always links to though. Hopefully he gets his stuff taken care of. Luckily he's got some awesome friends and family to help him through it. But honestly, if he ends up doing cons again, go chat him up. I helped him out when he was signing at Wizard World Indianapolis, and he was lovely to everyone, and definitely overheard some cool discussions about gaming and filmmaking.

It'd have to be way closer than than though, which would probably require it to have a good portion of itself within the atmosphere. Assuming they haven't stretched the size of it or Alderaan insanely from previous canon, I don't see how it could possibly be large enough to fill up that much of the view on any planet with enough gravity to support an atmosphere, which this one clearly has. Did they confirm that's the Death Star itself though? It looks really different from the Death Star. To me, the dish looks too big. It'd be interesting if it was some kind of crater left by mining entire moon for materials for the Death Star and the Star Destroyer fleet.

I think you're over thinking things, the teaser shot honestly probably won't be part of the actual film first of all, they haven't even started filming yet.

Secondly, the shot is pretty obviously zoomed in, which would cause the object to seem much bigger. They wanted to show something cool and give a hit as to what time period the film will be set in, and that's it really.

Oh, I definitely am. But I just saw someone else posting about it, and figured I'd pipe in, because when I saw it, it was the first thing that I noticed.

Implied starting date of the Empire from OT dialogue

"I haven't gone by the name of Obi-Wan since, oh...before you were born."

I took that as meaning on a regular basis. Padme called him Obi-Wan just before she died after having the twins. He went on to live on Tatooine almost immediately after. This is about nitpicky as you can get. The twins birth and his move to Tatooine is about the time he stopped being called Obi-Wan on reg basis. How else could this have possibly been done to line up with what you thought it meant? Of all things to criticize, I think this is nothing. So telling Luke he hasn't gone by that name since, oh before you were born. Is not inaccurate. Some people wanna take everything extremely literally, when people don't necessarily talk that way in real life either.

Plus, the line really sounds as if it's supposed to give Luke an impression of how he hasn't gone by it in a long time, probably to sound a bit old and wise, and if he's being rational about it, avoiding the interest he'd get if he said "At around the same time you were born". I'd assume at this point Obi-wan is still being coy with Luke. Even taken as literal truth, he probably hadn't been introduced as Obi-wan to new people since before Luke had been born.

What would have made the prequels better in your opinion?
Time

I'd say a direction that focused seriously on perhaps what the prequels did best, at least once you factor in EU material and current canon material like "The Clone Wars", that being a critique of the Jedi order. The EU outright commits to the idea that the Jedi order was flawed, and points to the OT being a serious spiritual rebirth of the Jedi. The prequels to some degree seem to go along with this, but they're bogged down by spectacle and distractions. If the prequels had focused more on this, things like midichlorians and pompous Jedi would have been a strength, used to show a Jedi Order who's become too focused on rules, absolutes and the demystification of their spirituality, not a weakness. Focus on a divide between Jedi who have become too high-minded, and forgotten the core values of the Jedi. Have Anakin serve as a sympathetic character, driven to the dark side by a Jedi Order so close minded, he really did have no where else to turn.

From KotOR to Clone Wars, this idea of the Jedi Order not being faultless has worked really well when executed, and used as a direct theme, rather than the somewhat ambiguous depiction of the Jedi you get solely from the PT.

Should I buy the Original Trilogy Blu ray? I already have the 2004 DVD.
Time

I got it on opening day. If you want them, go for them. The extras are nice, and RotS looks pretty damn good. I watch Harmy if it's convenient to do so, but the Blu-rays worked for me just fine when I didn't watch Harmy. I'd wait though if there's no rush and money is an issue, at least if you care about the OUT and color timing enough to be upset if there's another release with a better transfer soon, which there might well be.

Just watched the first episode (the ABC version). I don't love the art style, but it does have a good Star Wars feel. I'm interested to see more.

I wonder if we will see Darth Vader in the future and they had James Earl Jones Jones record lines for that as well. It seems like that was a pretty brief scene to have Jones come in and record for.

If I recall the interview on Rebel Force Radio correctly, he didn't come in. He just Skyped in or something. Apparently Matthew Wood literally had the voice filter on him the entire call.

If the movie is any indication on price per episode on Clone Wars, each episode probably cost 2 million to produce. I remember reading a while back a more official source, and I believe it also indicated George kinda just threw money at The Clone Wars, though it's been a while, and I don't know where this article was.

Yes, I checked and with TCW the 16:9 TV broadcasts were definitely cropped from 2.35:1. The 2.35:1 gives it a more epic film-like feel somehow.

The animation is already really suffering from a clearly reduced budget. Somehow I doubt they are animating things off screen we can't even see. The whole show looks like an early 2000's video game in a lot of ways. It might grow on me, but it was really grim in a lot of ways.

The other qualm I had was it never successfully set up the Imperials as evil enough. I found myself sympathizing with the Imperials, as the Rebels often came across as causing unnecessary loss of life in terms of grunts. They did nothing to discourage that sympathy. Perhaps it's residual love of Clones, but either way, I wasn't able to detach myself from that violence in the same way as I could in the OT.

Episode III: Revenge of the Ridiculousness
Time

I just wanted to let you know I recently had a dream where there was a rerelease of all 6 Star Wars movies, along with 3 fan edits of each. For some reason, this one was one of them, and because the the theater was dumb, they didn't specify which version you were going to, and I bought tickets to this one. My dream self was both pissed and amused he spent 7 dollars to see it. Other people walked out of the theater.

Give Star Wars a break for 6 months or more...watch with a critical eye
Time

It's probably been a year since I last watched Empire and Jedi. I have the Despecialized ones sitting on my hard drive, but thusfar haven't watched them since I don't want to have to find DVDs to burn them on. Not really sure how to make sure I preserve color accuracy when outputting to my TV, so I've kind of just left them sitting there. Wish there was an MKV release.

It would kinda suck if Disney took this away from Harmy to release officially but even though it is official and all it is Harmy's work so they would have to get his permission to do that.

Does anyone believe that Disney would do a better or more complete job than what was accomplished here? Sorry, but I don't see it no matter who is or isn't involved with this franchise at this point.

I will grant that they probably have access to more resources, better source media and all that, but look at all the garbage HD releases out there that claim to be the cats pajamas. Far too many if you ask me.

More thanks that I have go to Harmy for saving this piece of cinematic history.

Because Disney's about to blow one of the greatest goodwill stunts they possibly could do with Star Wars. A release of the theatricals is essentially a get out of jail free card for Disney if they really piss the fanbase off.

I'm watching too many movies to effectively give reviews, but lately I've seen:

Kill Bill Volumes 1 & 2 (Love the soundtrack for them)

Sunset Blvd. (The narration was well used. Haven't seen any narration that was so effective yet on IMDB quest.)

12 Angry Men (My new favorite movie)

The Rescuers

City of God

Eternal Sunshine of a Spotless Mind

Rear Window

My Neighbors Totorro

I'm starting to get an itch to watch Star Wars, but I started my quest to see the IMDB Top 250 because I kept rewatching Star Wars. I think watching the despecialized versions is a worthy excuse to rewatch though.

The Godfather. I didn't hate it, but I can't help but feel disappointed. Waiting to watch it for 5+ years sets your expectations too high I guess? Couldn't really keep up with who was who very well. Looking forward to trying it again in a couple of months. Just don't know what to say, because I really wanted to enjoy it. Is this how people felt when coming out of TPM in '99, minus the whole part where the movie they watched was really good?

What is/was the best SW Game ever, on any platform?
Time

Knight of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords has always been my favorite. I got it and Battlefront II for my birthday in 2006, and enjoyed the crap out of it. It really surpassed the first in terms of character development in my opinion, and a lot of ways, was stronger in terms of story. I can see why some prefer the original though. One of my biggest regrets is that I got KotOR spoiled. Wish I hadn't got KotOR II first. XD

I'm on the quest where you need to get all the things to save the air right now. It's quite good, wish I had gotten into it sooner, already waiting for a Steam sale on Bioshock 2. Similar to how I reacted to Mass Effect, where I just didn't invest myself in it a lot.

http://www.cheapassgamer.com/topic/307615-steamorigindesura-etc-tradesellbuy-thread/page-260

If you get tired of waiting for a Steam sale, and have above average trust in your fellow man, you can probably pick up a cheap Steam key here. I've bough ~10 things from people there, and have yet to get burned.

But be warned that the PC version of Bioshock 2 is a little off- it requires GFWL (even the Steam version) and has no available DLC (due to no GFWL marketplace anymore). The DLC for it is quite good and still available for the console versions. There is also no controller support built in.

Ooh. That's a bit annoying. Might try this place if I get impatient, but I've got enough of a backlog on Steam now that I can probably wait until the Christmas sale. I don't use the controller anyway, so that's no issue. It's like Arkham City though, you can create an offline profile, right?

Also, thanks for mentioning the Tales of Monkey Island sale, got that using the account credit from just selling off all these silly trading cards.

Help Wanted: Can someone make an Opening Crawl for me?

Any chance I can get the CS6 files to make a crawl? Have the tools, but don't have the template...

Here you go:

https://www.dropbox.com/s/barxppuv9qwab87/Opening%20Crawl%20Project.7z

This contains the updated fractal noise settings for the star field. If you prefer the YouTube version with tiny stars, let me know and I can send you that link.

It's 2.35 4094x1742 and 24fps, so be sure to set it to 30fps on the two compositions if you plan to use it on YouTube. (It's based off the Blu-ray ANH crawl). My advice for crawls is aim for 4 words per line, and try and have exactly as many lines or less than the ANH crawl has or you will need to mess with the projects fade out and path for the crawl which kinda of just end instead of go on forever (To be honest they still probably need tweaking). If enough people are interested I might try and retool it for 16:9 projects so it's not quite so harsh on cropping.

If you needed, I could also provide 4k project files for the Lucasfilm logo, and the Fox logo 4k 2.35 video w/ or w/o grain and color grading (Which I warn got copyright warnings (Later they revoked the claim when contested)).

If you have any questions, Skype me at valinkrai or PM me for my e-mail.
