We previously used GASMASK’s 4K release. We’re now using FLUX for the most part. The grain retention in particular is way better, as well as slightly less crushed blacks. I’m pretty sure they’re both pinched from Disney+.

Criterion just announced a 4K digital restoration of the international version of the film to be released in November 25th:
Only 1.85:1 aspect ratio though. 😦

Apparently the UHD still has the censored audio with the Bagavad Gita chant removed. Shame, as the release claims to have the “original theatrical 5.1 surround soundtrack remastered from the 35mm magnetic track”. Oh well.

I highly recommend you compare the 1080p and 4K versions together so you can see the difference in change of bitrate, hence the blockiness. It’s also easier for me to start working once I arrive back home on Tuesday.
From what I read the 4K is a “completely botched encoding” and the 1080p is way better. Knowing that I don’t know why you would want to use the 4K at all.
Though 4K was known to be a double of 1080p, so hopefully anyone might barely tell the difference.
With AVC 4K should be four times the bitrate of 1080p.

The 1080p 35mm scan has a AVC bitrate of 25mbps FWIW.
I saw Superman and I thought it was a good movie. What kept it from being great was the pacing and a pretty overstuffed plot with too much characters.

I was wowed by the colours on these renders, particularly ROTJ which looks incredible. I have no doubt that if Team Blu had released ESB and Jedi back in the day they would have received universal acclaim.
