Worst Edit Ideas

Someone accidentally loads up the wrong hologram in the Home One briefing in ROTJ, and promptly scrambles to switch it out before people start judging.

Speaking of this idea… this one may need to go to the best edit thread:

In TROS, after the Resistance listens to and responds to the message about Palpatine returning, it turns out that message is 30 years old and the informant wanted them to play the datatape backwards, and it is Kylo declaring full scale war against any anti-FirstOrder planets. Poe then lets out a "whew… i thought somehow Palpatine returned.

I’m not convinced this movie is ever coming out. It’s going to get cancelled like every other one. Disney sucks at managing this franchise.

I will ONLY believe it when I am at the theater with my popcorn, the lights go dark, the trailers have ended, and I see the Lucasfilm logo.

All right, having thought about it a bit more, here’s what I imagine for the ‘alternate’ set of edits as companions to my main edits.

  • Original film titles, same crawls otherwise as main edits (ideally, if possible)

  • Not sure whether to reinstate midichlorians! Current canon projects have seemed to dodge explicit mention of them, and even if one needed them for its story they would be probably be introduced there just fine

TPM:

  • Reinstate the trip underwater to Otah Gungah and a few scenes that come with it which were only removed due to depending on it

  • Reinstate Anakin being stated to be too old to be trained

AOTC:

  • Reinstate Yoda with a lightsaber

ROTS:

  • Existing alternate stuff about having Padme die would be part of this

  • Reinstate youngling murder scene and a few references to it

  • Reinstate Yoda vs Sidious and the explicit plan of Yoda and Obi-Wan to assassinate the two Sith (using the AI ‘Your mother once thought as you do’ line in ROTJ will help here)

In order to avoid having THREE versions of Episode III on offer (current/main version, alternate version, alternate stuff described above but Padme still lives on Alderaan), I could simply reinstate the youngling stuff into the main version as an update and have the fully alternate version in which Padme dies and Yoda fights Sidious.

Or, we could really just legitimately offer three cuts of Episode III to fit with anyone’s taste on these points:

  • Padme lives, Yoda does not fight Sidious
  • Padme dies, Yoda fights Sidious
  • Padme lives, Yoda fights Sidious

All three would feature youngling murder, for the reason that a major canon project closely tied to the Skywalker Saga (The Kenobi show) makes central use of this story point.

Thoughts? Outrage?

What are your thoughts on reinstating Padme helping start the Rebellion into ROTS? I know her scenes can be pacing killers but I think adding back the deleted scenes help sew the seeds of the plot lines that are expanded on in Andor and also makes her feel less like a fridged woman and more like her proactive Clone Wars counterpart.

That’s already in the edit. Go to page 1 and read the changelist 😃

Some thoughts:

  • I think you might need to include them going into the water. The cut from “This way, hurry!” to them underwater swimming is a little rough. I think the “Canon Cut” can restore some silly “Jar Jar moments” since a lot of other ones will still be cut out. EDIT: Rewatched the OG scene, definitely mute his scream when he dives into the water.

  • Yeah, definitely cut the cheesy: “Through the plannnnnnnet corrrrre

  • Remove Jar Jar’s over the top “OAHHHH” when the fish first sticks his tongue to the bongo

I prefer the Padme dies cut so this won’t be relevant for me, but maybe something like this:

YODA: Hidden, safe, the children they must be kept.

OBI-WAN: We must take them somewhere the Sith will not sense their presence.

YODA: Split up, they should be.

BAIL: I can hide Padmé and her daughter on Alderaan. But all of them together… it would be too dangerous.

OBI-WAN: And Then what of the boy?

YODA: To Tatooine. To his family, send him.

ORRRRR, if possible

YODA: Hidden, safe, the children they must be kept.

OBI-WAN: We must take them somewhere the Sith will not sense their presence.

BAIL: My wife and I will help Padmé raise the children. We’ve always talked of adopting a baby girl. They will be loved with us.

YODA: Split up, they should be.

OBI-WAN: Then what of the boy?

YODA: To Tatooine. To his family, send him.

EDIT: I just had to add the word “with me” at the end and it suddenly sounds better. Very short sentences are hard for the AI to do I guess.

Maybe try to do a full one of this to replace the existing one:

  • Come on, I’ll show you Threepio. I brought him home with me.

Then only the other line would replace the one when he uncovers the Threepio.

May be too wordy, but something like, “He’s in much better shape than when I found him.”

Maybe like this for the full line since it is mostly all off-screen:
Come on, I’ll show you Threepio. I fixed him up. He’s way better now. Watch.
turns Threepio on

EDIT: I see what you mean. Watched the full unaltered scene. This could work:

  • Ani: “Come on, I’ll show you Threepio. I brought him home.” removes cloak covering him “I’m fixing him up. He’s way better now.
  • Padme: “He’s wonderful.
  • Ani: “You really like him? He’s a protocol droid to help mom. Watch.” turns Threepio on

For context on C-3PO:

Current Episode I edit: (before the podrace)

  • You’re quite right, space flight is perilous… I didn’t exactly leave my last starship assignment in one piece.
  • Oh my, space travel sounds rather perilous. I can assure you, they will never get me onto one of those dreadful starships.

Current Episode II edit: (leaving Tatooine)

  • For a mechanic, you seem to do an excessive amount of thinking.
  • I’m not worried, R2. It’s just I’ve never flown before.

New Episode III edit: (leaving for Mustafar), I’d suggest…

  • Miss Padmé, I’m certain Master Ani will be quite alright.
  • Do you know? I believe I’m beginning to get the hang of this flying business.

Another thing that I don’t know how easy it would be to fix in Episode III, in your edit R2 was removed from the birth of the twins, but his reflection is still in the glass.

I’m sure someone could help make this happen. This link seems useful: https://digmodification.wordpress.com/ccc/

The updated crawls for Episodes II and III are perfect, but there is a small tweak I’d make to the crawl for Episode I: Cloak of Deception if it is going to be used for the “wider canon” edit, as there is a cheeky reference to “The Phantom Menace” in the updated crawl:

Episode I
THE PHANTOM MENACE

The Republic is in decay. After
centuries of peace under the
guardianship of the Jedi Order,
a menace lurks in the shadows
of the galaxy.

deception spreads throughout
the galaxy.

Attempting to capitalize on the
government’s complacency,
the greedy TRADE FEDERATION
has surrounded the small planet
of Naboo with a blockade of
deadly warships.

With the newly crowned Queen
desperate for help, the Supreme
Chancellor has secretly dispatched
two Jedi Knights to settle
the conflict…

That guy with no name said:

This, and also looks nothing like the death star hangar. also, why would stormtroopers just be standing in formation like that?

Here is a quick mockup I put together. If Ady wants to do something like this I think it would look a lot better, but it is his edit and choice though!

Hey Ady! Glad to hear you are on the mend!

Have you ever considered restoring the Han versus the Stormtroopers with the original 1977 version?

Part of the comedic charm of the original version is the Stormtroopers realizing “Hey… we out number him! Why are we running?

But then in the 1997 and onward edits, they just bait him into running towards a big room filled with more goons. In my opinion, it loses a bit of the humor that the original had.

Just curious!

(The screengrab does use the recomposited shot from SW:R)
