The Exorcist is one of my favorite movies.
I wouldn’t expect them to release any exciting new supplemental features (like the OOT) until they release their big, “Skywalker Saga” collection, when they might trot out all the old material. Even then, that’s not a guarantee.
Yeah, I don’t remember any good action set-pieces from AOTC either, and I’m not saying that to hate on the prequels because I’ll admit that there were a couple of decent action scenes in the other two.
It looks like they’re not discarding all of the horrible, embarrassing plot developments that came in Spectre. My anticipation for this upcoming Bond movie is basically rock bottom. Why can’t they figure out that when you fuck around and try to do direct sequels to previous films in this series, it doesn’t work? This is evident in Quantum and Spectre. Bond doesn’t need to be a cinematic universe. The reason the series is so great is because anyone can drop in for a film and not need to have seen the previous ones. Why can’t we just have a great, standalone adventure anymore?
Is Intolerance good? I want to watch it since it was such an important film in the history of cinema, but at the same time I don’t want to subject myself to a horribly boring 3.5 hours.
I don’t get it. SW is full of “anachronistic” dialogue. Especially anything Han has to say when he calls Leia “sister” in a very 70s way and references things like crop dusting.
People grew up with the OT so they don’t think twice about it.
Either that or apparently SW has never had sardonic or snarky humor, which I guess means I’ve been watching the wrong movies.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lXrBZnOIw7QIt’s not the fact that it’s snarky that sticks out to us. The dialogue, the line delivery, and pacing of the TLJ mom joke conversation feel like 2010s humor.
humor will strike different folks differently of course.
the mom joke opening is probably my least favorite part of TLJ, and i really like the movie. but i think it is a bit of an over-reach to call things “not star warsy”.
I don’t think I said that it wasn’t star warsy. There have been failed attempts at humor in Star Wars before. Some of the humor in Jedi is atrocious. I just think the mom joke felt like it was straight out of mid-2010s “quirky” comedy, which wouldn’t be funny even if it wasn’t in Star Wars but it’s especially seeing that on a star destroyer.

Embarrassing is the best way to describe Jedi Rocks. I too have a distinct memory of feeling horribly humiliated when I watched it for the first time.
I don’t see how you can’t see it, really, so it seems like we’re at an impasse on that one. “Okay, I’ll hold,” "skinny guy, kinda pasty, “I can hear you, can you hear me?” and “…about his mother” all scream “2010s snarky humor” to me.
Yes! “2010s snarky humor” is exactly what I was getting at!
Well, whatever, the line reeks of a type of humor that I hear a lot these days. Hopefully Ash or Ray will see this because I’m curious if anyone knows what I’m talking about.
The latter is very '70s and the mom joke and its line delivery feel very much like something someone would say in 2017.
EDIT: I can’t articulate it well, but there’s a prominent humor style these days where people say awkward, uncomfortable things that aren’t in and of themselves funny at all, but because they’re said awkwardly we’re supposed to think that they’re hilarious. I know that’s inarticulate, but hopefully someone will get what I mean.
Is it really any worse than Leia saying Tarkin smells, to his face?
I think the difference here is Leia using language/phrasing that is less contemporary than what Poe uses.
Yeah, she doesn’t say anything anachronistic or weird. It’d be like if she told Obi-wan in her message that she’d “catch him on the flip side” or something.
I didn’t even notice that. I mean it’s really just a bad joke, at worst. I can’t imagine it being a contender for the worst moment in all of Star Wars
I just looked it up too and thought it was pretty bad. I’ve definitely seen far worse in this franchise though.
Nevermind. I thought you were talking about Alien, so I was typing a big post about how I think the pacing is that film’s biggest problem but then I realized you were talking about Aliens and I agree with you. I do wish that Burke’s final scene was in the theatrical cut, though.
Blade Runner. I love this movie and I love the Final Cut, but I’m confused by the Deckard replicant question. It didn’t even really cross my mind and I didn’t interpret it the way that Ridley Scott says he intended it to be interpreted. I guess that’s a testament to how beautifully ambiguous the movie is.
Other than going missing as a kid and almost getting kidnapped, I’ve had little direct experience with crime. Someone hit-and-ran my car a few years ago but it was only a small dent.
American Graffiti
I really liked it. I thought of it as a tamer prototype of Fast Times or Dazed and Confused but in a 1960s setting. I also intentionally went in having no idea what Lucas changed for the special edition that was on the blu-ray, and nothing stood out to me as something that didn’t belong there. It’s amazing, and tragic, that he could restrain himself and only make minor revisions to this movie but go so overboard with the Star Wars trilogy. I know that there aren’t really any visual effects that he could paint a bunch of CG graffiti over in this film, but still.
It wouldn’t surprise me if their desire to curb the bootleg market played a small role in their decision, too. Not because they’re losing more than a negligible amount of money from bootlegs and fan preservations, because they’re not, but rather because it looks a little bad for the brand.
Even Pablo Hidalgo, who’s job it is (or was, I don’t know) to decide if all this pointless crap is canon, said that no one cares about specific versions when it comes to canon. They aren’t deciding what they sell based on whether it’s canon or not.
I didn’t say it was a big thing in the fandom. I said it was perceived as a big thing, especially in internet circles. I still don’t understand this notion that the OOT isn’t one of the most desired home media releases of all time. Things like Halloween 6’s Producer’s Cut were eagerly anticipated and I would imagine that that had far less of a market than Star Wars.
And I’m not projecting either, by the way. What I want most from Star Wars is for them to never make another Star Wars movie ever again, and I know damn well that’s not a majority opinion.
Like before?
Well, it was slightly different in 2015. The day before the digital release dropped (which was the same week as Celebration IIRC) there was a report citing a “source” within LFL that the Han/Greedo scene had been altered yet again, this time back to its original pre-SE edit.
That report may yet turn out to be true. It could be a change that’s being saved for the 4k remaster.
Anyway, yeah, it wasn’t an OOT rumor that time. But Greedo shooting first is arguably the most controversial change George has made to these films. Changing it back to its original state would be a big deal all on its own.
It’s important to note that the article’s source didn’t specifically say that we should expect the OOT the way that every other rumor has. They kind of hinted at it, but again, the point was more that there were 4K restorations happening, not that we’d get the original versions. That, to me, makes the article a bit more credible since it isn’t as speculative.
Yeah, but they also mention that Lucasfilm is thinking at least three discs per movie and that this Skywalker Saga release will “please fans.”
For the OT films, just what in the world could that possibly mean other than the unaltered version on one of those discs?!
Just visit some other Star Wars boards, and you’ll find that most fans are pleased with the SE. Many of them will argue, that they wouldn’t mind an OOT release, but they don’t view it as essential, and some don’t care for it at all. The OOT fans have sadly become a monority, so “please the fans” doesn’t have to imply an OOT release. The SE in the best state possible with a ton of previously unreleased extras will do that for most fans.
The whole “who shot first” thing is still widely associated with the Star Wars fandom. Pleasing the fans is an obvious nod to the OUT in this context. Whether this will happen or not is a different question.

Of course. It’s the source’s obvious way of implying that the OUT is on its way, but the fact that the Digital Fix has the restraint to not actually put it in their headline when that’s what would get their site the most clicks shows some integrity that makes me trust them a bit more than I have some other rumors in the past.
