Well now, if that don't beat all.  The compendium will certainly have a place on my shelf if Paramount can get the previous purchasers coupon right.

Yay!!!
What coupon?
The one they're trying to implement. There's no details yet.

source?

Did you read the digital bits article that was linked?

"Note that Paramount is working to set up a rebate offer for those who purchased the original Star Trek Into Darkness Blu-ray, the details of which will follow soon."

Nice!

I did just confirm the US Netflix currently has the 2:35 Blu-ray version.

Shame. Though replicating the Burj transition would be a bit tricky.

Interesting comment about the SD vs HD version. I'm assuming the author is referring to 4:3, as SD in the US tends to be synonymous with that aspect ratio. Yet there is no 4:3 dvd...

Nice job Anton - I checked those clips out previously when you mentioned them in a thread on blu-ray.com.

I only saw Star Trek in 2.35:1, I take it the IMAX sequences were straight cuts back and forth and not a transition like the Burj Khalifa climb in Mission Impossible and the arena entrance in Hunger Games Catching Fire?

Of the six released feature films with true IMAX footage is it only the above two sequences that transition from a standard aspect ratio to IMAX?

The first DVD was released in 1997... that was the flipper with a 2.0 track on one side and a 5.1 track on the other as you guys said.  Now I have the 25th Anniversary DVD from 1998 and it has only a 5.1 track in English.  My understanding is that Friedkin supervised that mix.  So does that mean that the original 5.1 track from the 1997 P&S side is different than the subsequent 5.1 track from the 25th Anniversary disc?  It would have to be, right?  Then the "version you've never seen before" sports a brand new robust mix different from all previous of course.  So there's a bunch of mixes for this film.  I assume the laserdisc must have the best mono or stereo.  Did they introduce new sound effects for the director's cut only, or did they introduce new effects all the way back in 1998 for the 25th Anniversary?

Yes. Having read postings from some knowledgeable people on blu-ray.com and lddb, if you want the 'original' (inc '79 re-release) audio you need three mixes from three different sources:

1. 1973 release: Mono from the '79 laserdisc but apparently it's time compressed to fit on one disc

2. 1979 re-release 35mm: PCM Dolby Stereo from the '93 laserdisc - presumably better than the below dvd's DD 2.0 version

3. 1979 re-release 70mm six track: 5.1 from the '97 dvd - P&S side

Everything after that is (an additional) remix.

Guys,

I would have to re-author my disc, since I purchased the Target disc. I assume everyone wants ALL of the unique bonus features on one disc?

Some of us actually prefer quality and have no problem with multiple bonus discs

Same here - df if you're going to do this please go for max quality irrespective of disc count. And as I mentioned/pm'd previously if the enhanced commentary can't fit in without being re-encoded providing it additionally as a separate file would be appreciated! Thanks.

For the disc, does everyone need the Target stuff AND the Best Buy? Or just the BB and the enhanced commentary?

Bit late to this but Target and BB and enhanced commentary please.

Going to buy the UK blu when it drops in price (no risk of losing first-run slipcover etc as there isn't one), which is the same as every other region's lacking standard release. And I'm not buying a Sainsbury's exclusive dvd.

Any chance you could make available the untouched enhanced commentary as a separate file in addition to the re-encoded one you're putting together for the disc?

I don't know if it's because they're mts or the bit rates on some of them are high or what but on both THX trailers and a couple of the others, the video is only becoming viewable about half way in.

When I play them onto my PC with Media Player Classic, they start some seconds after I opened the files, but from the beginning; if I use VLC, they start almost immediately, but the audio is from the beginning, while video become visible after 8-10 seconds... the same for all my m2ts file - I'm sure it's not because the filetype, but because the m2ts file I use are AVC - H.264, "heavy" codec for oldest computers...

Your call but I would be inclined to just include official trailers and add your preferred test trailer at the start/end.

I think to add them in a proper section, "unofficial", along with the Star Wars one, after all the others... I also thought to start a thread, "post your unofficial/custom made DD DTS THX trailer"... what do you think?

Another unaccounted for trailer (and it's very doubtful you'll get it) is the DTS water drop trailer. Apparently it's very similar to Imagine Films' intro logo, and they took issue with it resulting in DTS pulling the trailer. Instead we got the Sonic Landscape trailer.

I'm aware of it, and also asked a person to scan the actual film print... still waiting his anwer...

That's exactly it. I use VLC too. At least it's consistent then.

Putting them in their own section makes sense to me. I don't know if there'd be enough interest in a specific thread for custom audio format trailers but who's to say...

Interesting. Well you got the CDS trailer(s?) so most things seem possible!

As I'm sure you're aware there's also a Dolby SR logo'd version of Fanfare. Logically the real trailer is/was SR encoded but as the Dolby Stereo version you have from Jonno (good job on the fix and the other trailers) doesn't have the original audio either it's probably a moot issue.

I'm probably not the right person to ask as I'm only watching them on a laptop but they seem 'clean'. Having said that, that's based on what I can see; I don't know if it's because they're mts or the bit rates on some of them are high or what but on both THX trailers and a couple of the others, the video is only becoming viewable about half way in. Your call but I would be inclined to just include official trailers and add your preferred test trailer at the start/end.

Info: THE ARRIVAL - Special Edition (seeking a team up) (lots of useful info)

My suggestion would be 1.85:1 for the main feature and open matte for a bonus version - like Jetrell I'd like to see as much image as possible even/especially if it includes stuff not meant to be visible. Maybe a 1.66:1 version, which is a good compromise, as a separate release for those who want it? 'British feel' as 1.66:1 is/was a European AR that hasn't been used for years and is kind of an anachronistic description for a US film made in the mid '90s, but each to their own :-)

Good job on picking this project up Panther. Still got my off-air VHS but would welcome an SE with all the ld extras! Twohy makes some interesting films.

Better audio on the ones I didn't like makes it a closer call, eg c. Matrix City is better but for me d. Linked Spheres still edges it as my favourite.

As for the THX trailers, I'm not sure. Are they 'proper' trailers? How many versions of Broadway are there?! I don't like the Jurassic Park trailer - the dialogue/roar over the Broadway noise doesn't work - it's just grating.

Great project and kudos on getting the CDS trailer(s)!

You've only listed one SDDS trailer. I assume this is the triangle one? There are three others - searching for SDDS on youtube will get you results. Though if you want better quality I strongly suspect you're looking at telecine unless they exist in a digital format... For lack of a better description they're underwater, jungle and volcano. They exist as full-length individual trailers and as an edited combination of all three (the combination trailer is called Quest).

Of personal interest to me are the two upcoming SENSURROUND titles due to be released on bluray this year: BATTLESTAR GALACTICA (1978 version) and EARTHQUAKE... Given new bluray releases are around the corner, I would love to see this brief audio format finally presented properly. But I'm not holding my breath.

Midway is also due for release at the same time. But let's face it - faithful recreation of Sensurround mix - not going to happen. They'll use (I assume) lossless versions of the existing 5.1 and '3.1 Sensurround' remixes. And at the advertised price point they're going to be bare bones - Midway may get the extras from the dvd ported over. I assume a release of Rollercoaster will be just round the corner.

Was Buck Rogers in the 25th Century in Sensurround as well?

No - just the four...

Earthquake
Midway
Rollercoaster
Battlestar Galactica

Preserving DTS LaserDisc tracks, specifically Jurassic Park
Time

Just a comment to say I listened to the Jurassic Park DTS mix over the weekend - via 3 AVCHD encoded dvd-rs on my blu ray player decoding and feeding pcm over hdmi to a decent Yamaha amp driving Monitor Audio RS1 speakers - no sub unfortunately.

Having seen the film on original release, vhs and tv I don't have a modern home video frame of reference. But I can say that it sounded very impressive. Even at a fair bit lower than reference level, the velociraptor snort during the opening sequence of the film had the impact that I remember from the cinema. Which is certainly not present on the vhs or tv showings..! Likewise the rain and other sound effects had a vividness and clarity in the mix that showed you were listening to something a bit different.

Have to give thanks to borisanddoris and ElDonante for the archiving and Jetrell Fo for the direction on where to get it. Thanks guys.

I went with a 720p AVCHD version of Bluray for home viewing....

http://www.noblemd.info/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=12&Itemid=13

I set the format of the 720p to 23.976 and I set the audio delay @ -140ms...this was of course for the DTSHD track.  I also set the language to English and set the flag to yes.  Let's MKverge run without error codes regarding this.

Jettrell why did you do this? I didn't set any audio delay on my mux (used tsMuxer) and it seems fine...?
