Empire Strikes Back 1997 HD (a more accurate) Reconstruction (Released)

Is there going to be color correction? Harmy said Adywan’s version was very Gout like in color which is incorrect for the 1997SE.

I wasn’t planning on doing a cc since I really like the completely white Hoth scenes, but if I were to replace the Hoth scenes with a regraded Blu Ray source so it’s slightly blue again, would anyone be more interested in that?

Empire Strikes Back 1997 HD (a more accurate) Reconstruction (Released)
Time

Hi everyone after doing a restoration of the 1997 version of ROTJ (very close to being 100% completed) I thought I’d make a more accurate version of ESB 1997 based off of Adywan’s great work. Adywan’s ESB 1997 kept in a lot of changes that were made in 2004 that bothered me (mostly all of the Falcon’s cockpit shots being left cropped) so I threw this version together in a couple of days. This preservation is in 720p unlike Adywan’s version which is 1080p, so I would say that if you don’t care about the changes that I made here, go ahead and get Adywan’s since it’s higher resolution.

Sources:

  • Main source: Hal9000’s Empire Custom SE
  • KK5SO’s Custom SE
  • 2004 HDTV
  • Harmy’s Despecialized ESB v2.0
  • Harmys Respecialized ANH (for “A long time ago” title card)
  • ESB 1997 LD (for one shot that is zoomed in on only for the 97 version)

Changes:

  • Used Harmy’s Respecialized ANH to replace the Episode II style “A long time ago” title card in the 2004 version (and was still present in Adywan’s version)
  • Used a clip from a 1997 LD capture to replace the shot of Luke’s feet stuck in the Wampa’s cave since it was zoomed in on only for this version
  • Used Harmy’s Despecialized ESB to replace all of the zoomed in Millenium Falcon cockpit shots (except for one shot that was zoomed in for the 97 version)
  • Used Harmy’s Despecialized to replace all scenes with lightsabers since they were redone for 2004 (and were still present in Adywan’s version)
  • Used Harmy’s Despecialized to replace scenes on Bespin where Han’s shoulders have shadows on them which creates the illusion that he’s wearing his vest (shoulders were digitally lightened in 2004)
  • Used Harmy’s Despecialized to replace scenes where the Imperial rank badges on some characters have been digitally re positioned (2004 change)
  • The entire film has also been synced to the cinema DTS and LD 5.1 track

There are still a few things that are 2004 changes that are still in here, but they are just re composited elements that look almost identical to the 97 version.

Pm me for a link (it’s a 20gb file so it’s a megalink this time)

Color correction is underway thanks to another OT user that I’ll keep anonymous for now! I also caught a couple of mistakes thanks to DoubleOFive’s comparison. 4k83 will be used for the Rancor scenes and for Luke talking to Ghost Ben on Dagobah since they were changed in 2004 and not 1997 like I had originally thought.

I also made blu ray covers and disc art for the entire 1997 Trilogy using scans of the VHS boxes.

Disc art is here: https://imgur.com/a/b8NoKFR

Yeah, it would definitely be more accurate to fix the color on the 2004 HDTV lightsaber shots than to use the Blu-Ray. However…were the lightsabers in Jedi actually ever recomposited before the cores were replaced in 2011? I seem to remember that only being the case for a few shots in ANH, with ESB and ROTJ’s lightsaber composites being untouched in 1997…

I compared the HDTV and Blu Ray and didn’t see any differences in the rotoscoping. And I should’ve phrased that better, the majority of the lightsaber shots are from 2004, but the three or four shots of the sabers having those blown out neon cores and clipping were swapped by the Blu Ray.

Return of the Jedi 1997 Special Edition HD Reconstruction (Released)

UPDATE: I have officially finished the v2 of this project using all new sources (listed above). There are now theatrical subs, DTS synch, and improved sources. I want to give special shoutouts to ZigZig and Schorman for helping me out!

Zig was kind enough to purchase PAL and NTSC laserdisc sets, capture the scenes I needed from them, add in the TB and Gkar broadcasts, upscale all of that using SuperResolution, and finally merge all of them together using the “PANup” method (https://forum.fanres.com/thread-25.html) to get the best possible quality out of all of the SD frames. It basically gets pseudo-HD frames out of it, and in the words of Larry David, it looks pretty, pretty, pretty good!

Here are some screenshot comparisons (the third screencap is especially impressive!):

Instead of having the sources switch midshot, I just had Zig’s footaage replace all of the planets celebrating since it’d be too jarring to have it switch without a cut. So as of right now everything is finished except for color correction, the film is color timed to the 2004 versions (minus the botched lightsabers, those shots are replaced by the Blu-Ray). At first I was thinking of getting this color corrected to DrDre’s 4k83 LUT, but now I’m leaning towards learning to make my own LUT based off of the Gkar release and applying it. Hopefully that’ll get done soon!

I have a link for v2 at the ready so PM me if you’re interested!

Can’t wait until I can have my complete box set with theatrical-97-04-11 and revisited all together. For now other reason then I totally need 5 different ways to watch the same movie

I’m glad I’m not the only one who wants to make a box set like that! I’m actually trying to make three multi-disc boxsets for each movie like the Blade Runner box set!

One thing I noticed was that you used the Theatrical “A long time ago” text, instead of the newer version that appeared in the Special Editions and prequels. However, upon further inspection of a '97 PAL DVD and '97 Laser Disc, for some reason the new text was only added to Empire and ANH, and Return of the Jedi still has the theatrical text, so your reconstruction is still accurate.

Huh I didn’t even know there was a difference! I’ll have to use 4k83 to put the theatrical text back in for V2. Thanks for sharing that info!

Also that’s weird that they forgot to update the text for ROTJ

Thanks for the interest! This will definitely be a group effort so I’d be happy to receive help of any kind!

And I have a minor update regarding the subtitles for Jabba’s extra scene. I used Illustrator to recreate the theatrical subs and they came out pretty well! I’ll still have to make the resolution of the subtitles match the resolution of the film to make it blend in better. Would I be able to use this png to add subtitles on video? (I’m using Movavi Video Editor if that helps answer the question)

I had thought about using 4K83 but since Harmy used Blu-ray for his main source and I’m using the Blu-Ray to restore some changes I figured they would blend better. You’re projects sound interesting and I hope to see them get released! I bet they’ll be miles better than what I’m able to accomplish. I’ll pm you a link to what I have done!

Edit: Looks like I’ll be using 4k83 after all!

Return of the Jedi 1997 Special Edition HD Reconstruction (Released)
Time

Hi everyone!

As the title suggests this is an HD reconstruction of the 1997 version of ROTJ. This is a project I’ve been intending to do for a while now and I finally have something that I can call watchable. Since there are two very well made reconstructions of the 97 versions of ANH and ESB (thanks to Harmy, Team Blu, and Adywan) I figured ROTJ needed a reconstruction done in some capacity!

**V3 update: V3 is now live, and is finally exactly how I like it, thanks to me switching to Davinci Resolve. Regrained, better color, and video synced up to the audio down to the last frame (v2 seemed to always be slightly out of sync). The “Return of the Jedi Visual Comparison” was used, so there are no post-97 changes in this version at all!

I used 5 sources for this project (updated for v3):

  • 2019 Special Edition Blu Ray
  • Max DNR version of 4k83 (to undo post 1997 changes)
  • ROTJ LD upscale and multi-capture merge (thanks ZigZig and Rancor022/DarthPyro!)
  • 2004 HDTV broadcast provided by schorman (for opening logos)
  • althor’s LD capture (for reference and DTS audio, LD audio, subtitles, and chapters)

Extra things done:
*added a 35mm grain palette over 2019 BD, 2004 HDTV, and LD footage to blend in better with 4k83 footage
*color corrected a handful of 4k83 clips to blend in with surrounding scenes
*I did leave the color of the 2019 BD alone since it appears that they did use the 1997 versions as a color reference.

Video dimensions: 1920x1080p (cropped to Disney’s 2.39 aspect ratio), 23.976fps
File Size: 19.53gb mkv

PM me for a link and share some feedback here if you’d like. Thanks!

Thanks for pointing that out. I’m sure it won’t matter because I could barely notice it. The 2004 Jabba is just a invisible blur, but I’m sure people won’t be able to notice it.

Yeah it’s not going to be a problem for most people but I figured it’s worth pointing out

Spider-Man 3 Restructured (Released)
Time

I’ve always wanted to try to do a fanedit and since I haven’t seen much of anything for Spider-Man 3 I decided to give this a shot. Spider-Man 3 is a movie that I love to watch because of all of the “wtf moments” (emo Parker, Harry’s butler scene, lab scientists, etc.), but I felt that cleaning the movie up just a tad would make the whole movie flow so much better so it fits win with the other two films…oh and getting rid of the whole “Sandman killed Uncle Ben” recon…I’ve always hated that. This makes the movie much less distracted and instead it focuses on Peter’s struggles.

This fanedit is based off of the Editor’s Cut and not the Theatrical Cut since it was already a step in the right direction.

Runtimes:
Theatrical Runtime: 2hr 19min
Editor’s Cut Runtime: 2hr 17min
Restructured Cut: 2hr 01min

Changes:
Removing the more cringy lines (most of the reporter’s lines at the climax, a kid saying “wicked cool”, etc.)

No more Sandman being Uncle Ben’s killer retcon

Removed the broadway show

Removed Harry’s “raise him from the dead” line

Moved the Goblin Lab scene to after the symbiote meteor scene

Harry’s “you knew this was coming Pete” line is gone

No more scientists and “it’s probably just a bird” line is gone

Harry’s “I’d give my life for them” line is gone

Gwen Stacy’s photoshoot and mentions of her being a model is removed

Eddie and Captain Stacy’s dialogue is kept to a minimum

The officer attempting to stab Sandman with a shovel is cut

Peter’s goofy march at the parade is gone

Black suit Peter removing his mask and saying “this is something else” is gone

Peter making his hair look emo in the mirror is gone

Harry and MJ doing the twist is removed

Peter getting Eddie fired is moved to before Peters meeting with Harry at the coffee shop

The jazz club scene is cleaned up

The “how’s the pie?” comment is removed

The emo Peter Parker strut down the street is gone

Harry’s “I’m gonna kick your little ass” line is gone

News reporters kept to a bare minimum

The climax is cleaned up

*all of the additional scenes from the Editor’s cut are present

Hopefully I did a decent job putting this together, my video editor was giving me trouble with some cuts I wanted to make. I would love to have some feedback and criticisms.
PM me if you want to check it out!

Edit more changes have been made!

Replaced the Editor’s Cut intro of the Peter and Harry fight with the theatrical

Added back in Peter’s apology to Mr. Ditkovich

Edited around some poor cgi in the climax

Added back in “the twist” scene. Harry and MJ’s kiss felt weird without some on screen chemistry

Added in a post credit scene 😃

Phantom Menace bootleg VHS preservation (Released)

From the screengrabs, it definitely looks like it’s from the same source as the VCD. How complete is this, does it include the end credits, or did they have to turn off the camcorder to avoid being caught by the cinema staff? 😄

I figured it’d be the same, but hey I still think it’s cool! It cuts off about 5 secs into the credits

Phantom Menace bootleg VHS preservation (Released)

Hi guys!

I’ve had this bootleg TPM tape (which was probably sold on Canal Street) that has a cam recording on it for a while now and decided to digitize it for the sake of preservation! I think it’s the same as the bootleg VCD (someone can fact check me on that) but I figured it’d be cool to post here.

Pictures of the VHS tape:

Screencaps:

PM me to get a dl of this capture. The file is 2.78 GB. Also, if anyone wants to upload the cap on any other sites (i.e. The Spleen) you have my blessing for you to do so.

Thanks!
