YouTube/Vimeo/etc... Star Wars video finds
Time

I had missed this until now, but Corridor Crew had Todd Varizi on. He worked on ROTS & TFA (and also Star Trek 2009), and they breakdown the combination of CG, miniatures, bluescreened actors, other practical effects, and real footage of lava used for Mustafar, as well as the history of the TIE Fighters Sunset shot in TFA.

I just heard the music track entitled “Obi-Wan’s Revelation” for the first time. Interestingly it was removed from the final film. I’m curious as to people’s opinions on the track and if it should be reinstated?

Does seriously nobody care about this unreleased ROTJ track I found? 😭😂

Sorry dude, not every post gets replies.

But someone has already tried it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MFz8W7fYMy4

In the german translation, C-3PO is saying "Lando Calrissian and poor Chewbacca never got out of this palace (“Lando Calrissian und der arme Chewbacca sind aus dieser Burg nie wieder herausgekommen.”)

Translations aren’t always accurate.

I’ve watched enough bad English dubs of Godzilla movies to know that 😄

Yes I know, I just wanted to point out that in the german context, showing Chewbacca in the prison scene first would make sense.

If you want to remove all mystery about his location & fate, sure

Can you elaborate? I see the opposite as true, where it’d add mystery by not revealing his location & fate until we see him when Han does.

Oooh I misunderstood.

Funnily enough, the recent comics have added all kinds of hijinks to Fett’s life between obtaining Solo and delivering him to Jabba.
https://starwars.fandom.com/wiki/Boba_Fett#Hunt_for_Nakano_Lash and everything after that

From what I understand, it is indeed stupid

Considering 3P0 mentions Chewie not coming back as they’re on the way to the palace, would it be feasible to cut the scene of Leia arriving in disguise and handing over Chewie? Just cut straight to her sneaking in to free Han, getting captured, and we first see Chewie as Han arrives in the cell. Makes the plan less convoluted.

I’ve been liking this idea since reading Mac’s big list of ideas actually. Somebody on Facebook came up with a suggestion to begin the film with Slave One arriving on Tattooine delivering Han to Jabba, but I guess we got a decent reveal of Han in Carbonite when the Droids delivered Luke’s message (can it be improved upon? :p)…

No one has ever wondered “How did Han get to Jabba’s Palace???” when Han is revealed on the wall. Such an addition would be bad.

Luke sure made it from the North Pole to an equatorial docking bay dragging a dying giant of an armored man pretty darn quick.

The Emperor has a direct elevator between the Throne Room and a hallways somewhere near that docking bay, though it can also go to Vader’s meditation chamber (location unknown). Unfortunately, this is only found in a few deleted scenes:

Unfortunately, this final scene is the only one that would come close to showing the geometry of this problem, and it’s the only one of those three that’s never been released. Either way, Luke does have to drag Vader down a hallway, which is maybe stretching credulity. On the other hand, he can use the Force.

I’m good with the idea that the shuttle is coming from the opposite side of the DS2.

Yeah, and that would explain why you can’t see Endor from the throne room.

Good point.

As for the throne room, it all depends on where the spire is. A 2017 thread on TFNJCF says the answer is the North Pole, which makes sense to me, and they cite some source. Given the relative size (DSII is much smaller) and distance (and orbiting quite close) of the two bodies, I’m still not convinced that you’d never see Endor out the windows, but maybe 🤷‍♂️

Quick update:

https://www.facebook.com/swrevisited/posts/pfbid02MGc6EQrpgkXhMQcLDZXnxg4YV9GRqY9furbPAxU9tVd4QKbQ8dxGt7eJk8LCnGirl

Here’s the edit-focused part of the update. For equipment & funds update, click over to Facebook.

Today marks the day that the very first FX fix shot for ROTJ:R was completed. It’s a shot that has bugged me ever since 1983. The shot? When Luke is escaping the Death Star in the shuttle in the hangar. When the gantry falls it is no existent until it hits the floor due to the blue screen FX of the time and, when it does appear and hit the ground, it looks like a model because it has no weight to it. It seems that it was shot at the wrong frame rate which would have given it the scale and weight it needed. But I’ll reveal this by the end of the week and i can run you though what was done.

For reference, here’s the shot on Youtube: https://youtu.be/xPZigWFyK2o?t=463

Watch it at x0.25 speed. You can see the gantry silhouetted against a random explosion, but it completely fails to occlude any of the starfield outside. I would guess this is the same issue that lead to the B-Wings getting mostly cut from the film: The optical compositing process couldn’t handle really thin things. In this case, however, most viewers don’t notice (I never did, at least), but I look forward to seeing Ady’s version.

And since I can’t talk about this movie without a storyboard, here’s a storyboard for this shot, from November 19, 1982: https://macrobinoculars.wordpress.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/ra105-181.jpg

Not only is the falling gantry absent, but they were considering having Endor visible outside. Endor probably should be visible! And that would give a brighter background for falling debris…if the compositing worked.

Sounds like a new can of worms has been opened with these statements.

Well we haven’t had “From a certain point of view” applied to a whole movie yet…

Is there a visual comparisons for ESB:R? There are so many changes that it’s almost hard to spot them all.

Ady said he was going to do one because he didn’t think anyone but him could do it. So I was leaving it to him!

Maybe we (“the community”) should start on one anyway. Wouldn’t want to slow his progress down on the other films!

The Emperor’s insistence on being there to witness the Rebellion’s defeat is a form of unintentional self-sabotage.

He spent his whole life on this conquest for power, and when he finally gets it… there’s no thrill. He spends all day sitting in a chair. How boring is that? He needs to put himself in positions where he can get a new high off of showing off his power.

That’s why he needs to be there for the Battle of Endor. He needs that high, because otherwise he’s just feels empty. And it’s ultimately his undoing.

No, he’s there because he wants to ensure the Rebellion falls for his trap.

Mon Mothma said:

But most important of all, we’ve learned that the Emperor himself is personally overseeing the final stages of the construction of this Death Star.

His presence is the final piece of bait that draws the entire fleet into attacking immediately.

Denis Villeneuve says the Star Wars franchise “derailed” in 1983
Time

I remember thinking that a lot of the TFA behind-the-scenes stuff was Abrams talking about them constantly asking themselves if something was sufficiently Star Wars. Villeneuve is not wrong that a certain codification has sadly set in to most SW productions - and it’s a tricky line to walk. On the one hand, surely that mindset is part of the problem with the Sequels. On the other hand, you can’t tell me the art department for Andor isn’t asking some version of that question.

And besides, ROTJ has been agreed by most everyone to be the weakest of the OT for some time, and the Ewoks is one of the most commonly cited examples of the problems. I didn’t start this reply thinking I’d bring in my own pet project, but it’s relevant; the storyboards for ROTJ that involve Ewoks are often more compelling and exciting than the actual resulting footage, and I think a lot of it comes down to the fairly inexpressive faces of the Ewok costumes. I do not think they lived up to the intentions of the team making the movie, and Harrison Ford’s goofy tone in those scenes doesn’t help.
