I know that many of you are used to things being shared through links for download - but at this time my goal is to get this into the hands of the Director, Kevin Lima and make sure he sees it to offer some feedback. I know he was particularly disappointed in the DVD transfer, previous “DCP” and the Blu-ray which looks filmic, but heavily damaged, filtered and censored. Perhaps if people think it’s good enough it could be utilized by Disney themselves, since they don’t seem too interested in doing anything to clean up this catalog title.

The finalized files are very large Prores and DCP format and exceed 300GB in size.

Audio was finalized with base 7.1 layers and 4 overhead channels, currently encoded in DTS-X, but could also be encoded in ATMOS from the master remix sessions. (I don’t have an Atmos encoder.) Encodes are created in Dolby Digital Plus and standard 5.1, DTS-HD MA X, 7.1 and 5.1. Original theatrical track which was sourced from the Japanese and US laserdiscs (both in english) was preserved and encoded in DTS-HD MA 2.0 as well.

Overhead channels are utilized for reenforcement of chorus during songs, to provide atmosphere during lightning, thunder and rain, and a few spots towards the end of the film at the powerline concert, and when goofy’s car blows up.

An SDR version was also made in 4K, 1080p and 480i for DVD.

The censorship has been removed and a lot of time was spent stabilizing, dustbusting, color correcting, and remixing the sound. I hope you enjoy the documentary. Feel free to let me know if you have any questions.

I actually do remember seeing 1995’s A Goofy Movie on VHS and on television when I was a young boy growing up, and so I would really like to thank you, sir, for doing your very best in trying and rescue and restore this underrated 1995 animated Disney classic from a very obscure oblivion at Disney’s own expense or perhaps some other fate that could be far worse than a loss of any kind or type.

Also, thebiggerpictures, if in case Disney and Kevin Lima would ever finally come to their very senses and actually rescue and really restore and remaster A Goofy Movie in the very official sense of the word, and especially in the way the director intended and in the way people first saw it in theaters and/or on its initial home video release, but only just in case, then I really do think that just such a restoration of A Goofy Movie should really be christened “Disney’s A Goofy Movie: The Kevin Lima Restoration” or something else like that.

But we’ll see about that.

Correction:

One of the Amblimation widescreen laserdiscs that I’m talking about – as in 1991’s An American Tail sequel, Fievel Goes West, is already ripped.

So all we’re left with now as far as the Amblimation Widescreen laserdisc preservations are We’re Back! A Dinosaur Story (1993) and the only Amblimation laserdisc title ever to be mastered or certified by ex-Lucasfilm property THX Ltd., Balto (1995).

Well, from what I have heard from other online sources, the original 1986 Dolby Stereo mix of Don Bluth’s 1986 An American Tail has already been available on laserdisc (as well as VHS), even though it really hasn’t been on DVD or even Blu-Ray, especially what with all that remixing of certain sounds or redubbing of certain lines of dialogue (especially the redubbed voices of the orphan mice who, towards the end of that film, happen to bully Fievel Mousekewitz (whom I even saw as ‘the smallest, cutest leading man in Hollywood’ (similar to how King Kong happen to be ‘the tallest, darkest leading man in Hollywood’ who happen to co-star alongside legendary scream queen Fay Wray in the old 1933 King Kong film) into sorrow), however so permanently or something like that.

But I still do hope that someday, somehow or another, all those issues may finally be put to rest one of these days if Universal (and especially Amblin, Steven Spielberg’s production company) could finally come to their very senses and actually preserve, restore, remaster, even reinstate Don Bluth’s American Tail’s original 1986 theatrical audio mix (especially as much as possible), probably for any upcoming Blu-ray, 4K UHD Blu-ray, streaming, or even theatrical/IMAX re-release of the first two American Tail films (especially its equally memorable 1991 sequel, Fievel Goes West), especially by around that film’s 40th or even 50th anniversary or maybe later, and even if the first two American Tail films – both the Don Bluth original and its 1991 sequel Fievel Goes West – and interest in such – will ever get a cultural resurgence one of these days, especially thanks to the future efforts of anyone such as me to especially try and revive interest in An American Tail’s Fievel or the very like of him. Or, maybe not. Who knows?

Well, it’s only just an idea or a suggestion, but is there anybody out there who’s interested in any letterboxed widescreen laserdisc preservations of any, if all, of the following three films that were made by Steven Spielberg’s short-lived, London, England, UK-based Amblimation Studio (the one with An American Tail’s Fievel Mousekewitz on the studio logo at the end of each film, and which is also the ancestor of today’s DreamWorks Animation, the studio behind Shrek, among other such films): 1991’s An American Tail 2: Fievel Goes West, 1993’s We’re Back! A Dinosaur’s Story, and 1995’s Balto (the only Amblimation laserdisc release to be certified by THX ltd. (then part of Lucasfilm))?

Well, yes, I do remember Fievel Goes West not only just for featuring James Stewart’s last cinematic performance (as the voice of the dog character Wylie Burp) before he passed away in 1997, but also, if primarily, nowadays, for featuring the Powerpuff Girls’ Blossom’s original voice actress Cathy Cavadini as the new voice of Fievel’s big sister Tanya in Fievel Goes West, as well as for the two lovely songs that Tanya (through Cathy Cavadini’s beautiful singing chops) happened to sing in the movie itself (Dreams to Dream and The Girl You Left Behind, respectively); Yes, I do remember We’re Back! for featuring the Coen Brothers’ collaborator John Goodman voicing a cartoon T. rex; and yes, I do remember seeing Balto (the best movie that Amblimation ever did besides Fievel Goes West) in high school.

The original stereo mixes for Back to the Future haven’t made their way to DVD/BD either.

Yes. A lot actually.
It seems like it’s more rare for the original mono to be included then not.

Sorry, I forgot to say original mono tracks. While it’s true the original tracks for the films mentioned above have never been digitally released, the 5.1 mixes still sound the same as their originals with no noticeable changes made to it.

The only film I know of where this has happened is SW:ANH. While the mono has never been officially released, the original stereo mix was first released for home media in 1982. Then in 1985 the original stereo track was remixed with changes being done to some of the sound effects and a line of dialogue being added. This was used for every home media release until the 1993 USDC/1995 Faces where it was remixed again with elements from the mono mix and new sound effects added with these changes being carried over to the GOUT DVD; and the rest is history after 1997.

Besides ANH, are there any other films where the original mono/stereo mix never got released on DVD/Blu-ray?

Well, besides the mono mix for the original 1977 Star Wars, I know that the original stereo mix for Don Bluth’s original 1986 film of An American Tail never got released on DVD or Blu-ray, as far as I know, with all that controversy over all that unnecessary remixing and redubbing of the voice/dialogue and sound effects elements of the original 1986 mix.

But I do think that its first sequel, 1991’s Fievel Goes West (which I do remembered best for Fievel’s sister Tanya’s songs, Dreams to Dream and The Girl You Left Behind, courtesy of the beautiful and lovely musical collaboration between The Powerpuff Girls’ commander and the leader Blossom Utonium’s original voice actress Cathy Cavadini and the late great movie music composer James Horner who also did the music for everything else like Star Trek’s Wrath of Khan and Search for Spock, the 1988 George Lucas/Ron Howard fantasy collaboration Willow, the first Land Before Time movie, Braveheart, Apollo 13, and even James Cameron’s Titanic and Avatar before being killed off in a summer 2015 plane crash) really sounds fine for me, for they somehow kept the original 1991 stereo voice/dialogue, music and sound effects elements intact, only to up mix those for Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1 audio for the DVD and Blu Ray release, or maybe without any changes to the original stereo mix at least.

I was talking about the DVNR on the newer Koch BD. The MGM BD only used a light filter.
Koch went with the heavy filter, so while some of the dirt is gone, you also get more than a few frames like this:

Sometimes, I have heard through the internet grapevine that a lot of fans of Don Bluth, Steven Spielberg, and David Kirschner’s 1986 animated feature film, An American Tail, were still very upset way beyond crestfallen with the horrific way that they (Universal) tampered with the original 1986 Dolby Stereo release audio for An American Tail when they put it out on DVD and/or Blu-ray Disc.

According to TVTropes, “background music and sound effects were changed or added, new voice-overs were inserted (which wasn’t the bad part, since they seem to have come from the original recording sessions), and the orphans who bully Fievel near the end had their voices re-dubbed for unknown reasons.”

So I thought:

If they (again, as in Universal) can’t or won’t even re-release the first American Tail film using the original 1986 Dolby Stereo release audio masters as some audio source anytime soon, could we not even try and reconstruct or restore them or especially dub the original English audio from the movie’s original laserdisc release over the HD BluRay picture a la the Despecialized Editions of the original Star Wars Trilogy or something?

Given that much of the needed material (like James Horner’s expanded score for the movie, which was released in 2019 through Intrada Records) has been released in some way or another, a little audio clean up or something should yield results that at least come as close as possible.

Or maybe not.

Hate to bump this by a full year, but I am letting you all know that today is the eleven-year anniversary of James Cameron’s 15-minute AVATAR Day preview footage which I happen to see in IMAX 3-D on Friday August 21st, 2009 at 6pm!

Now, there is something I had really wanted to get recently, but never did. I have found out about it on eBay and tried to place an offer for it, but so far I had failed.

It is basically not only a screener DVD of some sort but also an exclusive presentation for the Visual Effects Society, or VES, for short, and it is not only definitely super rare, but it also contained things that Disney’s long-dead special and visual effects wing The Secret Lab, or TSL, for short, was working on some 20 years ago.

That DVD includes the following content:

1. A Full Feature Film Presentation of Disney’s CGI Dinosaur Movie from the year 2000, or 20 years ago
2. 3 Behind the Scenes Featurettes for Disney’s Dinosaur Movie
3. The Secret Lab Demo Reel
4. A Visual Effects Featurette for the 2000 version of Gone in 60 Seconds
   and
5. Mission to Mars Electronic Theater, Siggraph 2000 Featurette

Like I’ve said, Jonno, the James Cameron’s AVATAR Day preview screenings just so happened at 6pm and at 7pm on a Friday evening on August 21st, 2009, which is also about 10 years ago.

Also, I was on one of the AVATAR DAY preview screenings across the US on that day at an IMAX 3D theatre at White Marsh in Baltimore.

The AVATAR Day preview screenings of August 21st, 2009 was also among the very last if probably the very last great event trailer moment(s) for the major motion picture screen before they switched to online sneaks and saturation level information dumps, certainly as far as I know.

Well, I hate to be off-topic and I hate to be TL;DR-worthy, but it was about a full 10 years ago, on a Friday, August 21st, 2009, that the world (and myself included) had received a first look, in IMAX 3D, and for free, at 15 minutes of James Cameron’s then-upcoming science fiction blockbuster epic, AVATAR (not to be confused – under penalty of death – with the Nickelodeon cartoon subtitled The Last Airbender). And oh boy! I do remember getting excited for James Cameron’s AVATAR at the time.

Yes, James Cameron himself had already screen 25 minutes of footage from AVATAR at the 2009 San Diego Comic-Con at Hall H a month before, and yes, the day before Avatar Day, a small 2D teaser trailer for the movie came out online to mixed criticism, but Avatar Day was really that one time, nearly a full decade ago, that I went to see some free 15-minute preview of James Cameron’s AVATAR movie in IMAX 3D, no less. And oh boy! I was really blown away by what I saw in IMAX 3D for a free 15 minutes!

First, there was James Cameron’s intro to Avatar Day in which he was just letting us know that what we’re about to witness that day is a spoiler-free 15 minute collection of no less than six scenes from the first half of his Avatar movie. And he also gave us some brief overview of what we (and Jake Sully, the main character of the movie, that is) were about to be heading for that Christmas of 2009: A distant alien world out in space that’s also as dangerous as it is beautiful called Pandora, no less.

– The very first scene that the Avatar Day preview footage highlighted on August 21st, 2009 was the scene where The Quaritch guy (Stephen Lang) was talking to newbies on Pandora about the dangers of that world and also mentions something about the big blue people who called Pandora home: The Na’vi.

– The second scene highlighted by the Avatar Day preview footage on August 21st, 2009, was the scene where Jake Sully, the main character in the movie, connects his brain to his avatar body for the very first time. In the words of Jake himself: This is great!

– Now, the third scene highlighted by the AVATAR Day preview footage on August 21st, 2009, is the scene where Jake’s Avatar body frightens away a six-legged alien rhino-like creature known as a Hammerhead Titanothere, only to be chased into the forest by a six-legged black panther-like monster called a Thanator.

– I think the fourth scene highlighted by the AVATAR Day preview footage on August 21st, 2009, was probably the scene where Jake Sully’s avatar was attacked by a vicious pack of Viperwolves only for a Na’vi princess named Neytiri to come to his rescue.

– The fifth scene highlighted by the AVATAR Day preview footage on August 21st, 2009, was the scene where Jake Sully’s avatar met the Na’vi princess Neytiri for the first time, gets scolded by her, and was surrounded by glowing jellyfish-like wood-sprites on a log bridge. All amidst a bio-luminescent nighttime scene.

– And the sixth and final scene highlighted by the AVATAR Day preview footage on August 21st, 2009 was the scene where Jake Sully’s avatar tames and then rides a Mountain Banshee, or Ikran, as the Na’vi will call the creature, on one of the floating mountains of Pandora.

After all that, the AVATAR Day preview on August 21st, 2009 concludes with an extra montage of clips featuring more of the end battle scene and brief extensions to what was already seen in the small 2D teaser to the movie the day before. And oh boy! I was so hyped for that movie!

And four months later, I went to see the whole AVATAR movie on December 17-18, 2009, a full week before Christmas Day 2009. And all that happened about a full 10 years ago, so long ago now.

James Cameron’s AVATAR movie went on to eclipse his earlier 1997 film Titanic to become the all-time highest grossing movie in the whole wide world at the time (before Avengers: Endgame came along in this year of 2019, of course) but not before experiencing a seriously powerful backlash against it afterwards.

But I will never, ever forget that one time, long ago, that the world, and myself, too, got a free, 15-minute first look in IMAX 3D of James Cameron’s 2009 epic blockbuster AVATAR. Especially one in the shape and form of AVATAR Day, August 21st, 2009, that is.

And also, in spite of the very fact that the main character was a former soldier, as well as the fact that the main character turned against his very own people and culture, after finding himself in a different culture and world other than his very own and having to earn his way through said culture and falling in love with a woman who calls the alien planet her home, which is what made many people scream it copied everything from Dances with Wolves and FernGully and The Last of the Mohicans to Pocahontas and Halo and The Last Samurai, Jim Cameron still have the right nonetheless to wait a full decade for the technology to evolve and catch up to his vision for AVATAR so he can make it in the first place.

Finally, AVATAR was meant by James Cameron himself to be this familiar type of adventure story that also just happened to take place in an unfamiliar kind of environment, since it sets a classic kind of story – that of a newcomer to a foreign land and culture – on an alien planet like Pandora.

A thousand apologies for making this post too long to read, and you folks don’t have to read all of it if you want to, but I don’t know if the 15-minute AVATAR Day preview will ever need any preserving or restoration work – especially in 2D or 3D – or not, but do you?

Also, have some of you catch the 15-minute AVATAR Day preview footage on August 21, 2009, which is almost a full 10 years ago? Just asking.

Today, I wanted to discuss something from Samurai Jack creator Genndy Tartakovsky, one that is only nearly an hour long (that is, 50 minutes without any commercial breaks), one that was supposed to be the really grand finale to a kids cartoon show which Genndy had worked on back in the 1990s called Dexter’s Laboratory, and one which, despite an exclusive home media release on VHS on November 7, 2000, had remained unreleased on DVD, Blu-ray, digital, or any future home media format for 18 years (maybe because of its dark and suggestive content, or maybe because Warner Bros. and Cartoon Network refuses to release older Cartoon Network TV materials on DVD, BluRay, Digital or other physical or optical home media formats).

That thing I’m talking about is called Ego Trip.

To some fans of Genndy Tartakovsky’s animation work, it was like the Dexter’s Laboratory precursor to his work on the TV animation masterwork Samurai Jack. But Cartoon Network had rarely reran it now, and even Warner Bros. probably kept it locked in a vault somewhere all the while refusing to release Dexter’s Laboratory Ego Trip digitally or on disc formats like DVD or Blu-Ray!

I think that maybe Dexter’s Laboratory Ego Trip really deserves a decent and high quality release for DVD, BluRay, digital, or any future home media format. And fans of the show Dexter’s Laboratory are not okay with Dexter’s Laboratory Ego Trip being resigned to VHS copies, the ravages of time or the sands of time, or some other fate even worse than death!

I hope that someone will try to find some way to get people, and especially the people at Cartoon Network and Warner Bros. as well as hopefully Genndy Tartakovsky himself to even start having conversations about bringing the Dexter’s Laboratory Ego Trip special digitally and on DVD, Blu Ray or any future home media format, so we can talk about what it was, where it came from, and why it needs to come out digitally or on DVD, Blu-ray disc or any future home media format!

(Especially in the best and highest quality audio-visual presentation possible, maybe)

And finally this question: Would anyone especially here be interested in even helping restore, remaster, or especially reconstruct the 1999 Dexter’s Lab TV movie special Ego Trip to its original 50 minute length, in the best and highest quality A/V presentation possible (and not only the original 2.0 stereo broadcast mix but also a 5.1 Dolby EX/6.1 DTS ES Discrete worthy remix), preserving all the details in the original animation production/background cels, and even if such efforts may involve one of the most extensive, one of the most complex, one of the most expensive and especially one of the most difficult restoration/reconstruction/remastering process ever attempted for TV animation – fan-made or otherwise?

Throughout history, we tell each other stories of all kinds and types, especially those in any form, medium, etc., and some of the earliest forms of storytelling are epic heroic myths.

Despite living in an ever-changing world, in keeping in the tradition of storytelling past and present, can you guys list/name/think of the greatest examples in the world of epic heroic myths from all around the world, and especially those in any form, medium, etc., past and present?

Here is my Update: In episodes of Dexter's Laboratory in which Dee Dee's two friends Lee Lee and Mee Mee appeared in, we can hear the same leitmotif for Dee Dee's friends over and over again, beginning with Tribe Called Girl and ending somehow with Trick or Treehouse.

But since my longtime dream project "Dexter's Odyssey", which is a theatrical big screen live action/animated Dexter's Laboratory/The Powerpuff Girls-inspired epic, would mainly be the epic tale of the coming of age and unlikely friendship between both Lee Lee, the Asian friend of Dexter's sister Dee Dee, and Dexter himself, as well as of the great epic battle between one of Dee Dee's friends Lee Lee (as the Avatar Princess Lilimaia) and Dexter's arch nemesis Mandark (as Mandark, the evil Dark Lord of the Avatars), who according to prophecy, Lee Lee (as said warrior princess) is to destroy...

I have an idea for what a new leitmotif for Dee Dee's Asian Friend Lee Lee should sound like in Dexter's Odyssey by accompanying a 25-second slideshow of pictures of Lee Lee with an unreleased music excerpt from Hans Zimmer's brilliant score for Disney's 1994 megahit, The Lion King.

You see, some or most of them here in the States are annoyed by the lack of supplemental material, great video and audio transfers and art from the last 2 seasons of the show.

Well, if Dexter's Laboratory would ever be released on Blu-Ray, any upcoming Blu-Ray release of Dexter's Lab would be certainly so much better than the existing DVD.
