A Work-in-progress on color correcting and forest-ing the Vader Castle shot:

Tentative Tracking

Obviously the lights of the castle will be darkened.

As far as the shot length, I’ve sped it up 1000% (10X speed) and that’s still not enough to simply replace the castle from the original 3 shot establishing sequence. I don’t want to speed it up more since the smoke and fog looks odd (and I’ll have to re-track a slower version of the lavafall regardless), so I’m thinking that it might be possible to use this one shot to replace all three.

Thoughts?

Woooow. This looks amazing. I’m grateful they released biomes when they did, perfect timing

Thanks! I’m glad you like them 😃

Covid has been a blessing and a nightmare all in one. It has allowed me to spend more time on this cut but it has limited the maximum creativity I wanted to put into filming new scenes. I’m so glad I found a company that produces such great props so this shot should come out great…

What is your process for when you’re going to shoot the props? have you kind of mapped a story board or do you know in your head exactly what you want?

I agree the thematic use of the Sith Spinning Scream is a bit shaky, but in terms of how it would sound in the moment, I really love the idea. It’s worth trying out at least.

I definitely think its worth testing the sound right as he explodes; or slightly after.
Found a way more echoed version in SWBFII,

Yeah, I’ve done the same but I can’t make up my mind if flashbacks need something to indicated. I feel Padme scene was a little overdone but I guess that shows the audience that the vision is destroyed and blurry.

I find the most effective route for flashbacks is a slight vignette around the footage and drop the saturation enough to distinguish the now vs then.

It doesn’t look like a vision. It’s just confusing. And while I assume it was that way in the theatrical cut, having Kylo’s theme burst open specifically on the shot of Vader’s helmet is kinda weird. Shouldn’t it be the Imperial March?

I’m fine with it being ambiguous.

The music has also been changed, yes. Kylo’s theme here borrowed from TLJ rather than the understated cue of Vader’s theme is relatively appropriate given it’s the first time the audience really gains any insight into why Ren is the way he is in this edit. I don’t much care for the sequels’ approach of flatly stating the expected themes when familiar symbols appear, so I wanted to change it up just a little.

Agreed. I’m not a fan of the music being used to be like “hey guys remember this”.

Thanks folks! It leads on nicely from this part earlier in my edit where Palpatine and the mask are being more explicitly linked from the outset, though a first time viewer wouldn’t yet know that: https://vimeo.com/549080534

So when he returns to Vader’s mask after he events of TLJ, he searches “deeper” and thinks he is discovering more about the presence speaking to him.

Hooooly sh!t. I would kill to have this added to Hal’s cut of TFA. Id genuinely pay to have it added in. This is what the sequels needed. Moments of foreshadowing and hints at what’s to come.

I love just seeing the Lava with the Castle looming over it.

MR - good idea with the clunk sounds, i had a bunch of metallic sounds i sent too.

Also, if anyone is interested again in maybe implementing crackle sounds for the saber, i still have a bunch of sounds i made in a folder, they might be useless but you might be able to salvage something from them.

Yeah I’ll be recording new lines once we work it out. I will do several different versions with different inflections so we have alot to choose from. Looking forward to doing it. The puppet show is now my favourite part of the movie lmao

  • i will say though, the way the first Skywalker was edited to fit when Rey looks over is brilliant in the new cut.

I’m not able to access the full res Mandalorian episodes but, the Imperial Shuttle shot in hyperspace with the Slave 1 trailing a little ways behind works really well, just would need to find a way of masking it out without ruining the hyperspace effect.

Only other thing is finding some good Ben Solo footage for when he’s piloting; also a possible reaction shot for when he hear’s the transmission, scarred footage of Kylo from TLJ can work if I’m able to mask it out in After Effects usally depends on the angle.

Rough Concept: https://media.discordapp.net/attachments/501825149469851659/846772383628001300/PicsArt_05-25-05.30.42.png?width=540&height=540

Currently been cleaning up the Lando audio from the Star Tours ride however; theres a kid speaking over part of the message, unfortunately all the youtube recordings of the ride have crowd cheers with the exception of the one I have found.

Now we’re cooking. I don’t mind how he originally arrives but getting an extra scene of Ben would be delightful

I recently made a bit of a breakthrough and put the finishing touch on my sequel mega-edit, namely how we transition from TLJ into TRoS and the context of Kylo’s final prayer to Vader’s mask.

After receiving a mysterious broadcast in his darkest moment at the end of TLJ Rekindled (thanks to poppasketti), Kylo Ren (using footage moved from a later scene) beseeches guidance from what he believes to be his grandfather’s presence, or essence, which leads him to Mustafar in search of a hidden ancient power. This in turn leads him, inexorably, to the true phantom behind the mirror, Palpatine.

Uploaded this scene here:
https://vimeo.com/554625583

This is insanely good.

In the perfect world, I would add everything prior to the shot of Mustafar to the end of TLJ and end it on a sting.

Fantastic work man.

I’d appreciate a green Saber. I can’t remember if I changed that in my TLJ cut but the option would be great.

I can’t help feeling as excited as the kids everytime I watch this clip. Simply amazing.

I think I’ve watched it 8 or 9 times. They took an insubstantial moment in the movie and made it something beautiful and emotional

Wow I am blown away by the new puppet shot, that is truly fantastic work!

I had to go back and watch the original scene in the movie to remember what was replaced there and I saw a way to potentially extend that scene and tie it into the ending even more.

I was thinking something like this:

  • Rey stumbles upon the puppet show with Luke facing down the walker
  • She’s approached by Nambi Ghima and asked what her family name is
  • Rey admits she doesn’t have one and then hears the puppeteer say “Skywalker”
  • Cut to puppet Luke facing off with Kylo (as suggested by Sherlock)
  • Rey senses his presence and runs off to ForceTime™ with him

So basically hold off the Skywalker name drop until it would be most impactful. But I don’t know how viable this would be to pull off, you’d need some reaction shots of Rey. Her original reaction to sensing Kylo would work perfectly for hearing “Skywalker” but then going from that to her running off would need some kind of padding.

But anyway, all the props to RogueLeader, Faraday and everyone else that worked on the puppet shot!

I love it. Great idea. And it would be a brilliant way of extending the puppet show.

I’ve suggested ways to emphasize it even more, like having Palpatine’s voice sometimes be layered with multiple echoing voices. Like all the Sith are speaking through him.

So I have been playing with this idea for the past little while, trying to make it work. This is still rough, but I think it’s in a position that I can show it for feedback. I really wanted the “I am all the Sith” thing to lean into the “I am Legion” idea of the Sith literally possessing Palpatine’s body, so this is my attempt at conveying that. I’ve used Sade’s PHENOMENAL re-ordering of Palpatine’s dialogue, ending on “No match for the power in me”.

Now, I had seen people on here mention that the pregnant pause in dialogue in this cut was unfortunate, and some wishing that it ended on “You are nothing” so that it’s clear that Rey is responding to THAT specifically. So I let the Sith voices do the talking during that pause. Honestly, I’m pumped about how this is going, but I need everyone’s ears. Does this rule? Or does it suck?

https://vimeo.com/553993952

If people want this for their edits, I would do it for all of Palpatine’s dialogue in the entire movie. Then editors could adjust levels however they like, or even do what RL suggested initially and only have the extra Sith voices come through occasionally.

I would essentially be supplying WAVs of each Sith voice separately so they could be mixed in as desired. Maybe sometimes you only want the whispery ones, maybe sometimes just the croaky ones, or the deep ones.

This is amazing.

An Idea that was on my mind last night. Anyone who has seen Rebels will remember the World between Worlds.

In The World between Worlds we hear the jedi past & present reverberating throughout the scene.

How about on Exegol we hear the Sith of past reverberating throughout the entire place?

I had the thought that instead of hearing moments from the past, the sith keep calling to Rey & Kylo.

whispering stuff like ‘‘Come to us…’’, ‘‘Be one with the darkside’’ & a bunch of sith whispers. It makes the sith seem parasitic (which they are & were).

EDIT: Oops, just saw someone mention something similar in another thread

(I’m pretty sure the general idea originally was suggested by someone else. I can’t remember who, but I don’t think I’m clever enough to have thought of this on my own.)

Lol, I love the proof of concept. Can we just put this into an edit?

I’m pretty sure I was the person, or one of the people, who suggested that idea. I would probably have one shot of Kylo and Luke just having a stand off, and then in the second shot Kylo takes a swing at Luke, who ducks below the stage, and immediately pops up behind him, making the children laugh. This would be fairly easy to do, if I had a Kylo puppet. It’d be much easier to time this than the timing of that damn fireball! But I think people at the time had some good arguments for why it should be the AT-AT vs Luke rather than Kylo vs Luke. If there was enough demand for it, and Faraday had time to design a Kylo puppet, I wouldn’t mind putting something together.

That sounds fantastic! Way better than anything I could cobble together in 30 minutes of keyframing lol. The other really nice thing about doing a closeup of Kylo and Luke is that, it would probably be easy to made a puppet that looks like Kylo with his mask on, rather than “a guy with a blue stick” who looks like Luke. And I don’t mean that as an insult to Faraday - I think the Luke puppet looks perfect for the style of something these aliens would have made. But if “they” were trying to replicate a mask, rather than a human face, it would be easier for “them” to draw, you know?

So then, maybe ThisIsCreation could expand on the original voiceover a bit? Say, “jiajkvlw LUKE SKYWALKER hwaiofppp KYLO REN grhjailg.” Between seeing a Kylo Ren mask, and hearing the names, I feel like that should alleviate any confusion about what the puppet show is representing.

I am down for that, if it goes ahead then it can be timed out so the real words hit exactly when they should.

Edit: I cannot believe how beautiful the design of the puppets are. The walkers have such an elegant design
