I won’t comment on the objective merits of the project as a whole, but I do have one question.

How exactly did the Empire get a stock photo of the droids together?

Isin’t it like an important plot point that they don’t know how they look like and they’re just combing tatooine for any droids?

That’s so true, I didn’t think of that! I’ll throw that idea away. Thanks for commenting!

Maybe just remove R2 from the picture and center threepio?

I’m not sure. I think it ultimately just creates a plot hole. Although I had fun making the shot and the posters, it’s not really necessary for the plot and ends up creating more problems than it solves.

If I really wanted to keep it, perhaps I could change the picture to Han Solo? That way, it establishes him as a dangerous person, and the posters make sense as Jabba would have just put a bounty on him.

I’m really looking forward to this. Your changes are great. Do you think you’ll have it done by this year?

Sadly, I keep getting new ideas, and people keep leaving comments with even more great suggestions! As you might have seen in my last few posts, I’m actually in the process of redoing the colour grading. Thanks to some of the feedback, I’ve realised the original grade was a bit too dark and desaturated.

BUT I’m hoping to get Part 1 finished and uploaded by the end of this year. I’ll also be updating you all more often, as I’ve done some pretty cool things that I’ve been meaning to share!

Thanks for commenting! And please feel free to leave any feedback or suggestions. I’m always happy to hear them!

One minor nuisance I have for this movie is Leia’s line too Tarkin before the destruction of Alderaan about him “holding Vader’s leash.” I know it was meant to insult him, but it implies that Tarkin outranks Vader in the chain of command.

I think many of us look at Vader as only taking orders from the emperor.

Thank you for commenting! And I agree, so I went ahead and did it! Here you go!
(Had to do some cheeky VFX to get the cut to work, but it was lots of fun!)

Using footage of Luke from the Falcon’s cannon scene is pretty creative and works really well here ngl, great work and can’t wait to see more!

Sadly I can’t take credit for that, I first saw that idea on EC Henry YouTube channel. He is such an inspiration. Hopefully with a bit more work and a new pc I’ll get my renders looking as good as his!

Yes! Thank you so much for working on this edit! People are way too afraid of fanediting ANH and ESB in non-purist ways. I understand having respect for where the series began, but these two films are by no means perfect and could use touching up just as much as anything else in the franchise.

I also want to state that I personally disagree with a lot of what AZLN said. Pretty much every fanedit that exists for this film already is for some degree of purist. Be it an edit that simply enhances the visual fidelity, or an edit that tries to find the perfect blend between the original edition and special edition of the film.

I was also wondering about a few personal hiccups I have with the film, and if you plan to touch on any of them, or would be open to messing with any of them:

  1. I always get the sense that I’m meant to care more about Biggs, but he’s so in the background that he hardly even registers as a character. I feel like including his introduction scene would help a lot with that narrative arc. Especially with you adding in Luke’s reaction to his death later in the film.

  2. Speaking of Luke reacting to death, I’ve never liked the way the film handles Luke’s reaction to his aunt and uncle being killed. I know it spurs his motivation for revenge against the Empire, but he shows a hundred times more emotion to Obi-Wan dying, whom he should realistically be far less close with. I’ve heard Luke has a haunting thousand-yard-stare when he finds his aunt and uncle, but really, he’s just kind of somberly staring. Besides, Luke isn’t the type to so quietly internalize his mourning. His main recurring weakness is how quickly he’s overwhelmed by emotion when his loved ones are in danger. And with his reaction to Biggs’ death being added back into the film, this sticks out even more like a sore thumb. I’m honestly not sure what could be done given the source material, but I’d love if a creative solution could be found.

  3. And when it comes to Luke mourning Obi-Wan, I feel like Luke shouldn’t hear Obi-Wan’s initial “Run Luke, Run” beforehand. At this point in time both Luke and the audience should be feeling the loss of Obi-Wan, and this line directly gets in the way of that by essentially grabbing the audience by the collar and screaming he’s still there in some capacity, so we don’t need to feel bad about it.

  4. C3PO is always whiny, but he’s just kind of a jerk in this film in a way that feels unlike him. Specifically how he’s constantly blaming others for everything bad that happens. I know this isn’t entirely unintentional, since he shows a bit of growth at the end of the film with his kindness towards R2-D2, but it still feels uncharacteristically mean of him and it would be nice if it could be cut back on, even just a little.

  5. I feel like Luke shows some jealousy over the idea of Han and Leia getting together when Han asks him if Leia would ever like a guy like him, and Luke so quickly and grumpily shuts the idea down. This, too, reads as another moment that lacked awareness of the future of the series given Luke and Leia are siblings.

  6. The characters “have a bad feeling about” a lot of things in this film. The line is cute and cheesy the first time, but gets very redundant, very fast, and the dialogue of the film would only benefit from its exclusion.

In any case, I am extremely excited for when this fanedit releases. I love Adywan’s work, but even with just the changes you’ve listed so far, I have a hard time picturing this not being my go-to version of the film to watch when all’s said and done. Good luck, and thank you for all your hard work and dedication!

Hey!

I just wanna say thank you for commenting! I really appreciate it, and you’ve given me a few things to think about.

  1. I think it’d be fun to add Biggs’ introduction back in. This is supposed to be more of an extended version of the film, and I can always make a separate purist cut without any deleted scenes. So yeah, I think I’ll give it a go! If anyone knows of any HD or 4K-upscaled versions of the scene, please send me a link!

  2. I know what you mean, but I feel like Luke’s reaction to Biggs’ death is still pretty brief, so hopefully it won’t feel too different from his reaction to his aunt and uncle’s deaths. That said, it’s definitely something I’ll keep in mind.

  3. Maybe I’ll make it sound more distant, so it’s more like, “Wait, did we hear that, or was that just the wind?” I think that could be a cool way to keep the line while still letting the moment breathe a bit more.

  4. I agree with this one, too. I’m planning to incorporate some additional dialogue from the radio drama, including some different line readings that I think feel more like the C-3PO we know and love.

  5. Yeah, no incest! Haha. I don’t think that moment is particularly important to this film, and it gets pretty weird when you consider the context of the saga as a whole.

  6. Honestly, it’s cheesy, but I kinda like it. It’s Star Wars, after all. The whole thing is a little cheesy, and that’s part of why we love it!

Once again, thank you so much for taking the time to write all this out. I’m really trying to make something special that people with different tastes can enjoy.

Even with the feedback I’ve received so far, I’ve already made some changes to the colour grading to make it less dark and grim, which I’m really happy with. I’ll hopefully be showing that off soon!

Feedback like yours genuinely helps me look at the film differently and think about things I might not have considered otherwise. I’m excited to keep working on this and see where it ends up. Thanks again!

I guess I’m a little bit of a contrarian when it comes to fan edits like this, but are you sure you aren’t “doing too much”?

Let me start off by disclosing that frankly I’m not usually a fan of radical fan edits, and I suppose this edit isn’t “for me” at the outset. I get that, and I understand. I saw Star Wars Revisited when I was in high school and while I loved it back then, looking back I’ve turned back into a purist and increasingly more and more of a Despecialized and 4K77 kind of guy. So I admit at the outset that this probably won’t be my cup of tea.

With that being said, as someone who loves both the PT and the OT, some of these changes I am not sure make sense, even in the context of “prequel era storytelling”. I am assuming that the viewer in your edits will be watching the films in “story order” (i.e. 1-3, Rogue One, then ANH) rather than release order.

  1. The crawl. I don’t think it needed editing at all in fact. Even back in the original 1977 copy, a fan watching the movies in “story order” can piece together that the events of ROTS and Rogue One. The first two paragraphs basically are a plot synopsis of Rogue One. The audience already knows that the Republic has become the Empire from previously watching ROTS and RO, so the line “The Galactic Republic, once a beacon of unity and peace has transformed into the oppressive Galactic Empire” is unnecessary.

1a. This is more of a reply to honestabe earlier in this thread, but even acknowledging the deleted Luke binocular scene earlier in the film, the reason it was cut was because with it in, the movie was jumping back and forth in various places too quickly. In the original draft cut of the film Luke shows up only about four minutes into the film. In the final cut, he is introduced about fifteen minutes in. For the first few minutes of the movie, it would be awkward to cut right from the shootout on the Tantive to a shot of Luke just… farming.

Remember that in dialogue, its always best to start the dialogue as late into the conversation as possible, i.e. start a scene in the middle of a conversation (in media res) and cut away the moment the point is made. Luke’s introduction on the farm doesn’t really properly introduce him the way it does later on in the finished film.

  1. Some of the changes don’t really make sense, even in the context of the PT. For example…
  • “Removed Luke’s initial reaction to Leia”. Luke doesn’t know she’s his sister. For all he knows, its a beautiful princess from a distant planet; how could he have possibly known? This also extends to their kiss in the rescue sequence. Neither of them knew. Its only weird in hindsight, but we only have that hindsight as someone watching the PT first.
  • Remember that Obi-Wan is telling Luke that “I haven’t gone by the name of Obi-Wan since before you are born” and “I don’t remember owning a droid” and “Your father wanted you to have this when you were old enough” because, in his point of view, he’s trying to protect Luke from the truth that Vader is Luke’s father. Yes, Obi-Wan is lying to Luke. He wants Luke to think that his days as General Obi-Wan Kenobi were a long time ago. He ostensibly made up the story that Luke’s father wanted him to have the lightsaber because, in a certain way, Obi-Wan sees himself as Luke’s father figure. And Obi-Wan never owned R2. During the Clone Wars, his R4 unit was on his Jedi fighter but I don’t think Obi-Wan would’ve considered that “owning” R4. Jedi aren’t meant to own possessions anyhow.
  • “Leia no longer calls Obi-Wan Ben” - in the Kenobi series, young Leia calls him Ben often - even more than she does Obi-Wan. Now it makes more sense to leave that line in than to remove it. She knows Obi-Wan Kenobi and Ben Kenobi are the same person. Its an example of the later retcon actually making this seeming ‘mistake’ make sense.
  1. I am wholly against adding music from later movies, even ones from ESB and ROTJ, to ANH. The Imperial March was a HUGE addition to Star Wars when it debuted in ESB, and adding it to ANH cheapens its eventual debut in the next movie. In that same vein, playing Battle of the Heroes over Obi-Wan and Vader’s cautious saber duel is almost cartoonishly dissonant that even Adywan removed it from Revisited. It never really belonged. Tonally speaking, silence fits the mood of a tense, cautious fight between old Obi-Wan and a fearful Vader. The last time Vader fought Obi-Wan, he lost.

  2. On a related note, why remove Obi-Wan calling Vader “Darth” when the Obi-Wan series, which showed that previous fight, added the context to the line? If Vader truly wants Obi-Wan to understand that Anakin is dead and only Vader remains, then Obi-Wan essentially going “yeah sure whatever, dArTh” is warranted. Obi-Wan says it to mock Vader.
Adywan’s edit of the duel, and especially Scene 38 Reimagined, in my opinion, miss the point of this duel entirely. I understand that the real-world version of why the fight was so choppy and slow was because nothing of the kind had ever been attempted before, and that David Prowse (in full costume) and Alec Guinness weren’t exactly stuntmen, but respectfully this is not a prequel fight where its more of a dance than a fight. Obi-Wan doesn’t expect to win, and Vader doesn’t want Obi-Wan to try any of his tricks like he did the last time they fought.

  3. As a whole, I’m not a fan of replacing practical effects or lack of lore-accurate hyperspace or adding background effects to internal cockpit shots. I wasn’t even a fan of many of the CG additions made to the Special Editions, because it seems like an insult to the ILM team of 1977 to replace their hard work with someone else’s CG work, especially CG work that can look dated over time.

Once again, I realize this edit isn’t “for me”, but at some point there comes a time where these fan-edits Ship-of-Theseus an Academy Award-winning film into something that its not, and that will always rub me the wrong way.

Hey, first of all, thank you for taking the time to write such a detailed comment. I genuinely appreciate it.

I completely understand where you’re coming from, and honestly, I agree with a lot of what you’ve said, especially as I studied film. I’m a huge fan of projects like 4K77 and Despecialized, and I think preserving the original film is incredibly important. The original 1977 version should always exist and be available, and I’m grateful that so many talented fans have dedicated their time to restoring it.

Because those projects already exist, I felt free to explore a different question: What if A New Hope had been made after the prequels? That’s the itch at the core idea behind this edit.

  1. Regarding the crawl, my goal was to keep it as close to the original as possible while slightly better connecting it to the larger saga. I specifically wanted the film to still work whether someone watches it as Episode IV or as their first Star Wars film. That’s why the changes are relatively minor. I though the line “ The Galactic Republic, once a beacon of unity and peace has transformed into the oppressive Galactic Empire” fit that perfectly. A line that I pretty much directly took from the first novelization of Star Wars.

  2. As for Luke’s reaction to Leia, I agree that within the context of A New Hope alone there’s nothing wrong with it. My thinking was simply that, with the full six film story in mind, it becomes a plot point that doesn’t go anywhere and can feel awkward in retrospect.

As for Leia calling him “Ben,” I know the Kenobi series helps reconcile that line. My approach has generally been to make the films work as a complete viewing experience on their own, without relying on viewers having seen every show.

On Obi-Wan’s dialogue, I know many of these lines can be explained as him protecting Luke or speaking from a certain point of view. That’s a completely valid interpretation. For me, some of the lines still felt like they reflected ideas Lucas hadn’t fully developed yet, so I chose to smooth out a few of those moments.

  1. I agree with your point about the Imperial March. That’s why I avoided using the full ESB version and instead used a more subtle version. And with Battle of the Heroes, it is something I’m still debating. I know some people love that approach, while others feel it clashes with the tone of the original duel. I’m not completely decided on it yet.

  2. With the removal of Obi-Wan calling Vader “Darth”. I agree that the Kenobi series does a good job of recontextualising that line. Before Kenobi, it felt a little strange that Obi-Wan addressed Vader as “Darth” rather than "Vader”.

My reasoning for changing it isn’t that the original line no longer makes sense. It’s more that I’m trying to create a version of A New Hope that flows primarily from the films themselves. Since this edit is focused on bridging the gap between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope, I generally try not to rely on material from the TV shows to explain or justify things.

In other words, I don’t think the original line is broken anymore. I just personally prefer the scene without it in the context of what this particular fan edit is trying to achieve.

  1. And finally, I completely understand your concerns about replacing practical effects with modern VFX. My intention isn’t to improve upon the work of the original ILM team. In fact, thanks to projects like 4K77 and Despecialized, I feel their work has already been preserved and celebrated. Because those versions exist, I felt comfortable experimenting with a different approach. For me, this edit is about scratching an itch I’ve always had as a fan, what would it feel like to watch Episode III and then go straight into Episode IV without feeling the 30 years of real world storytelling, filmmaking, and technological advancements that separate them?

I hope that helps explain my thought process a little better. Even if we ultimately disagree on some of the changes, I really enjoyed reading your perspective, and you’ve definitely given me a few things to think about moving forward.

hey, thank you for your comment, I really appreciate it!

  1. To answer your first question, here is the crawl.

"It is a period of civil war. The Galactic Republic, once a beacon of unity and peace has transformed into the oppressive Galactic Empire. A Rebel fleet, striking from a hidden base, have won their first victory against the evil tyranny.

During the battle, a small band of rebels managed to steal secret plans to the Empire’s ultimate weapon, the DEATH STAR, an armoured space station with enough power to destroy an entire planet.

Pursued by the Emperor’s right hand, Darth Vader. Princess Leia races home aboard her starship, custodian of the stolen plans that can save the Rebellion and restore freedom to the galaxy…"

As you can tell it’s very similar to the original crawl with just a few things added, and rephased to better reflect the Prequels and Rouge One.

  1. Yeah I actually agree with you. For a modern first time viewer, it does take a while to get to Luke. That said, I’m a bit hesitant to change it. The droids do a lot of heavy lifting in terms of introducing the world, and I don’t want to overwhelm the audience too early, with too much information. This is great video that better explains it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GFMyMxMYDNk

  2. I tweaked this, using paint outs and editing, so that R2-D2 crosses first on his own (little heroic lad), then C-3PO follows separately after hesitating. It helps sell the moment a bit more and also explains why they’re split up in the next scene.

  3. Yes, and maybe you’ll get the scence in full in few days…

  4. I do agree. It doesn’t bother me too much honestly and I don’t know what a solution would be if not just cutting it.

  5. I love Scene 38 reimagined. The biggest issue is just how different it looks the grading, sets, and overall finish don’t quite match the film. Maybe If I had access to a high bit version to properly regrade and blend it in, I’d definitely consider it.

Hope that answers everything! Thanks again for taking the time to comment

This is a WORK IN PROGRESS

Hello there,

This is my work in process fan edit of Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope. It features NEW/REMASTERD VFX created in BLENDER and DAVINCI! An updated colour grading, and a full re edit.

I’ve honestly been working on this project for years. I’ve probably “finished” and restarted it about five times at this point. But now I can see the light at the end of tunnel and feel like it’s time to share what I have so far.

I’m a recent film school graduate with a strong interest in editing and VFX, and this project has been a way for me to develop those skills while also reshaping one of my favourite films into how I remember it feeling as a kid.

I’ve seen a lot of great fan edits in this community with really strong ideas. What I wanted to do was take some of those kinds of ideas and execute them at a higher technical standard, bringing them to life with more polished visuals and seamless integration. So many fan edits, and comments from this community inspired me, so thank you all!

This edit sits within the current Disney canon, and it’s important to me that the prequel era storytelling carries through into this version. That said, my main inspiration comes from George Lucas’ original vision and themes, rather than later creators own visions for Star Wars.

My goal is to finish this edit with your support and give you fine folks an edit that really delivers on what a lot of us imagine when we think about Star Wars.

Thanks for checking it out.
