Ranking the Star Wars films
Time

*Disclaimer: It’s merely my opinion

  1. STAR WARS (My favorite film of all time. Lucas at his best. Most satisfying ending in the series. Stands on it’s own as story, I don’t think you can say that for any other Star Wars picture. )

  2. THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK (Yoda, Lando, Boba Fett, and Emperor Palpatine introduced. Imperial March. Maybe the best lightsaber duel in the series. An actual surprise in Vader’s revelation to Luke. One of the rare times a sequel is as satisfying as the original.)

  3. RETURN OF THE JEDI (Han’s rescue and Jabba’s palace sequence, non Special Edition, is great. I don’t mind the ewoks, but it’s the Imperial trap and subsequent space battle along with Luke and Vader’s duel in the Emperor’s throne room that make this one for me. Does have the weakest ending of the original trilogy however.)

  4. REVENGE OF THE SITH (I think it cleans up some of the mess from the earlier prequels. Lightsaber duels galore. I like the ending which is a call back to the original Star Wars.)

  5. THE FORCE AWAKENS (This one may rise in time but I cannot see it as being better than any film in the original trilogy. Really like Rey, BB-8, and Kylo - in his mask. Shot on film too. A lot to like, but…Basically a reboot of A New Hope. Music also not as strong as even the prequels, which may the best part about the prequels. Some non Star Wars feeling aliens, to me anyway. Also the least Star Wars like ending. Not really a self contained story as the original film was. However this one does get better with each viewing for me and depending on how it fits in the new trilogy it could be more satisfying but again this is a basic complaint that it relies too much on what comes after.)

  6. THE PHANTOM MENACE (In my opinion, and whatever one thinks of George Lucas, it was somewhat audacious to even set out to make a trilogy to perhaps the most beloved film franchise of all time. Even more, this was a prequel where everyone who saw the originals knew exactly where the story was going, and it manages to feel very different and fresh from the original trilogy. Also shot on film, looks the best of the originals. A very flawed film with some good new characters (Maul) and some horrid (JarJar), but the Duel of the Fates sequence, music and action, is great. Killed Maul off far too soon- Clone Wars notwithstanding. Weakest ending of the saga.)

  7. ATTACK OF THE CLONES (Questionable on many fronts. The romance seems forced and hokey. The Jedi council is blind and foolish but this does not seem to be a deliberate story choice. It’s almost like they want Anakin to turn to the darkside, in fact having a member of the Jedi council secretly in league with Sidious would have done a better job explaining their blindness. I like the planet Kamino, but not the Jango Fett plotline. It’s still Star Wars but the least satisfying episode thus far.)

TFA Blu Ray Releases
Time

I pre ordered the Steelbook since I had the Steelbooks for the other 6 films. It’s not a perfect match, particularly the spine, but I do like having Kylo on the cover . And the title on the front is debossed as on the other Steelbooks. While I like the Captain Phasma artwork on the back, I would have preferred the poster artwork as on the other releases, though Attack of the Clones has a strange green tint I guess to reflect Yoda’s green lightsaber on the front. I guess at some point we’ll get a Snoke cover for one of the other episodes.

(Spoilers)How could The Force Awakens have been more original?
Time

I am going to repost part of my thoughts, for what it’s worth, from the review thread.

The Starkiller base should have been a fake, with the real weapon of the First Order being a mind, a military genius. I would rather have seen something along the lines of Germany invading France in World War II where the French were still looking at warfare from a First World War perspective and invested heavily in stationary defenses at the Maginot Line. The New Republic could have same mindset seeing the First Order as the same as the Empire, building their own superweapon or similar defensive strategy only to be turned on them to destroy the new capital. They would lead the Resistance away to attack the Starkiller base, which would be a ruse only to lead to a sneak attack by the First Order on the new capital. That general idea anyway.

The Force Awakens: Official Review Thread - ** SPOILERS **

Random wall of text review!

Loved Rey, BB8, the overall feel of the film. The main OT characters were actually unnecessary and felt forced into the film (except Luke - who was barely in it). The more minor one’s (Chewie and the droids) fit in nicely. The filmmakers knew they could never make a villain as good as Vader so they made one who was literally a Vader wannabe; pretty clever actually. Ren was a 7/10, but could easily have been a 2/10, so good job. There was more humour in the BB8 “thumbs-up” scene than in the whole prequel trilogy. Rey and BB8 are “classic” characters, worthy to stand beside the OT cast. Other than “Rey’s Theme”, the score was very forgettable. This was as good as could have expected, with the exception of the poor score. Snoke is a terrible name and not at all frightening as a character, and I fear for VIII and IX since he will probably be in it more. Abrams was a safe and uninspired choice as a director, but I think he gave it his all. Han’s death did not affect me like it should have. His character seemed to have taken a step back from the OT. I miss the Han from Zahn’s novels. Starkillerr base was unnecessary WE DID NOT NEED ANOTHER DEATH STAR! Carrie Fisher…yikes. Escape from Jakku and Rey-Ren fight were the highlights in regards to action scenes. Glad the duel was not too choreographed.

Almost as good as ROTJ, which is what I had hoped for.

This runs closely with my thoughts on the film as well. My first thought when Han was killed was not poor Han, but poor Chewie. I felt like they should have had Han killed off at the opening of Episode VIII, kind of a Janet Lee in Psycho thing. That might have actually been surprising.

Also I did not like the last shot, it was not Star Wars enough if you know what I mean.

I do hope they go in new directions in subsequent films since this is so similar to Episode IV. Not too impressed the rathtar bit either. That and some of the aliens felt like they were from another franchise like Doctor Who or something. All in all it was fun and there is a lot I liked about it and it seems to get better with each viewing, for me at least.

More OUT Rerelease Rumors from John Landis!
Time

Baronlando said:

I really hope Landis is the way we find out.

Beverly Hills Cop 3. Not as good as the first two, especially part one. I forgot he had a cameo until I watched them again a few months back.

As for the release I would actually hope they hold off until next year, or more likely 2017, and put out a UHD (4K, HDR) blu-ray combo pack or something. Maybe with a Dolby Atmos mix. We can dream. But would there be new errors introduced? Can we ever be truly satisfied?

THX 1138 "preservations" + the 'THX 1138 Italian Cut' project (Released)

Thanks for the heads up, and welcome to the boards. You mean Sept. 8th of course. ;)

IIRC, the last two times TCM ran THX, it was the 2004 version. Can anyone record it, just in case?

Yes not the 1st, my mistake, but actually the 7th since it starts at 11pm Monday night for me. Thanks for the welcome. I've lurked for a bit but when I saw this was coming on I thought I would decloak, so to speak.

For what it's worth, for anyone interested, Turner Classic Movies is broadcasting what appears to be the 1971 Version on next Monday - September 1st. On their site under the TCMdb listing they have the run time at 86 minutes as opposed to Mr. Lucas' super duper version at 88 minutes. I am looking forward to it since I have not seen the original in years. And perusing this thread makes me want to check out the Italian version too. For all of George's later tinkering with his films, he was a genius in many ways back in the '70s.
