PLEASE no...

I have the CD, and the best way I can use it to contribute to this project is to provide photos of me burning it...

I have the vinyl as well as the CD version of this album. The only track remotely good and well-played there is "End Titles - Reprise", but still doesn't hold a candle to Vangelis' interpretation...

dark_jedi, I'm a Demonoid user myself, so anytime you do the good deed, by all means, drop me a PM...

I'd just like to add my own 2 cents.

I'm not in the DTS camp, I believe a nicely encoded DD track sounds just as good as a DTS track. Also, the chances are a DTS track will tale in excess of 500MB of space on such a movie... I prefer to have maximum image quality than having the dubious "improvement" in sound (no to mention that not all players are DTS-equipped, and that the experience is highly subjective, considering the variations in receiver and speaker set-ups). My suggestion therefore would be to avoid adding a DTS track and concentrate on a nice, clear and crisp DD score, with an equally pristine video quality.

- I already tried it and the video is way off in both color and aspect ratio so I tossed the idea.

Wait, are you saying the ending from the LD version is using a different aspect ratio and drastically different colors? because, image-wise, that's about all that's needed, to attach it at the end of the DC version. Once this is "in", and the unicorn scene becomes optional, we have both films in hand.

Can I make a suggestion? I'm wondering - seeing that someone (Citizen) has already tried to place the voiceover as an alternate audo track - how hard would it be to make a seamless branching disc with both versions.

Let's say someone uses the pristine HD version of the Director's cut as main source, and then:
1) adds the naration where appropriate in the audio;
2) cuts the unicorn scene (that is, separates it) and adds the "original ending" from the best available LD source (since they're daylight scenes for a change, they could be video-enhanced and cleaned, to match the rest as best as possible);
3) allow the end-user to watch either version from the main menu at the beginning - Just like in the case of "The Abyss" and "Independence Day"

It would be sort of similar to the work done on the OT by Metallaxis... except for the branching part.

How feasible is this?

PS: Citizen, any chance will your work be available to the rest of us? It's a great concept.

I am posting to clarify things a bit: DVDRebuilder does not crop the edges, in order to obtain 1.77:1 images. I've tried this procedure mentioned earlier with several "original" non-anamorphic DVDs of varying ratios (from "Nixon" and "Life is Beautiful" to Kurosawa's "High and Low" and others, including "Blade Runner"), and in none of the cases did I lose the sides of the image, as a result of the "crop/blow-up" process. I haven't seen the "2 black bars of diferent shades" phenomenon, either. I'm just happy it works.

dark_jedi, I hope you're sending Rikter copies of the materials on the second Criterion LD...?

I hope it'll be my version of "Future Shocks" that you guys will be using for this set, I've seen an alternative .mpg circulating on the net, and it's quite inferior to it... I believe it's my "Future Shocks" version that digitalfreaknyc has used on his HD-DVD dual set.
My second DVD also contained the Esper soundtrack in a lossless format, by the way.

- I would love to see your version of "Future Shocks" and possibly include it here on this Angrysvn Release!!

Rikter, YGPM - just let me know.

dark_jedi, to be honest I don't know exactly how DVD Rebuilder differentiates between 2.35:1 and 1.85:1, but it just works without cropping any of the actual image - it simply knows where to cut. I discovered it by accident.

Well, I use a different procedure than what most people describe on these forums...

My steps are like this: LD to Digital Video (Digital8 videocamera), then I import the files into the computer directly as MPEG2, via ADS Instant DVD2... It has an excellent Cirrus Logic processor, and the software allows me to tweak spatial and temporal filtering, along with brightness, contrast etc. In the case of Blade Runner, I did my best to clean up the video.

Now, since I import MPEG2 at a 8MBps bitrate, but the the video is still pan-n-scan with black bars, I go to the next step: I produce the final DVD, which is about 8GB in size. I don't think it would fit even on a Dual-Layer disc. So I proceed to the final step, which is re-encoding to DVD5 size, using DVD-RB with CCE at 7 passes, and using the AVS Expert option which converts 4:3 to "true" 16x9... this gets rid of the black bars.

The resulting video is, therefore, slightly "blown-up" to DVD resolution, which results in some bluriness... but I doubt anyone can obtain much better results without using equipment unavailable to amateurs.

I hope this answers your question, dark_jedi.

I want to chime in...

As some of you may know, I was behind one of the 2-DVD versions of the "Original Theatrical Cut" (recently found on TPB), and I had mastered my Criterion LD rip to 16x9, adding "Future Shocks" on the extras disc from a personal, digital TV capture...

Cheers, you guys are cool! keep up the good work! It's been a wonderful surprise to discover like-minded people in this world!

PS: There is an interesting interview available on bladezone site, concerning various soundtracks. Here's the link:
http://www.bladezone.com/contents/film/production/soundtrack/visions_in_sound/visions_in_sound.php

Might be of some value. By the way, the site contains audio rips of the Harrison Ford CD mentioned earlier in this thread.

FYI, here's some trivia: the so-called "Gongo Release" is not, by any means, "made in Romania". There are several things which indicate this: 1) the words are spelled very badly and the titles of the tracks are full of grammar errors; 2) the syntax of the phrase is strange, it appears as if someone was literally translating in Romanian some phrases which were originally conceived in English; 3) There is no such thing as a "Gongo Romania" label, and 4) - "the smoking gun", if you wish, that country did not have its own CD production facilities until 1998 (!)... even the largest official labels were pressing their discs in Hungary.

Criterion Collection of Blade Runner (Released)

hello guys...

I came across this post from a Google search for "On The Edge Of Blade Runner". So I registered to reply, heh.

As it happens, there's a full anamorphic, gorgeous transfer of the Original Version available *as we speak* on TPB. It's a 2-DVD edition, which includes a documentary, soundtrack, and a lot of DVD-ROM content. I've seen LD rips before, but this one looks really good - no artifacting, no distorsion and true 16x9 is a bonus.

now... can someone help me finding a good copy of that elusive "On The Edge Of Blade Runner" documentary?

edit: Rikter, dude, I just realized you did one of the TPM vesrions - and an album, as well... Props, man, good work! You should check out this BR version I posted (from a newsgroup source... they're doing "Hearts of Darkness" next)
