+1 to Jawas scene reincorporated…
Hey Smudger, do you plan on doing a Obi Wan Kenobi edit (The Smudger Cut)?
Hello! Yes, I did get an original copy of it. I’ve skimmed through and been inspired by a few cool ideas for sure. I need to sit down and watch the whole thing though. My major complaint in the first half was Bespin music on Alderaan?? What a mortal sin lol. But thanks for the tip! Anything else you’d like to see addressed in this edit that hasn’t been done yet in a way that is satisfactory for you?
I have watched a quite few different edits of Kenobi so when you a have Workprint available send it to me as PM and will happily give you some feedback. What run time are you aiming for? Patterson was 2hrs 29mins but I think anywhere between 2hr -2hr 15m mark would be better.
Hi, Acbagel, were you able to get a copy of Kai Patterson’s edit to watch? The edit is not for everyone (I really enjoyed it though) but there few good ideas in it that you may be interested in. For example, the edit did a really good job of trimming the Leia under the trenchcoat scene when escaping the water moon base. Also, when Kenobi uses the Force to save Leia from falling off the building there is a really good original Star Wars theme. If you would likle a copy let me know and I will PM you.
I watched the edit overnight and thoroughly enjoyed it. I know you put a lot of hours into the edit which I’m extremely thankful for. The tone and structure of the movie felt like a fast paced Star Wars adventure which could have been released in the theatres. The subtle touches of John Williams was awesome and I think this is what really made if feel so Star Wars-y. As much as I enjoyed the run time of 1hr 45mins and the trimming down of certain long-winded scenes, I also feel it may have cut too much. Here is a personal list of the scenes to be re-added if you were ever to release a V2. Other people on this thread may have also mentioned some of the scenes I’m referring to
These extra scenes may only add an extra 10-15mins bringing the running time to 2hrs which I think it still acceptable for feature length Star Wars movie. Everything else on the edit was spot on and worked for me personally. I hope you take some of these changes into consideration, but either way this will still be my go to Obi-Want movie. Thanks again for your work on this.
I agree, I think you should leave the Ahsoka Thrawn dialogue in this edit as I believe it will play an important role in the Mandoverse later. Also, we the see the origin of the Beskar spear that Mando gets later which is also referred to in later episodes. Smudger also excluded the Ahsoka Thrawn dialogue and the origin of the Beskar spear scene from his edit which I always thought was odd as it’s setting up the future series. When Smudger was online (it appears he’s gone into hiding) he has admitted it was mistake and has plan to put it back in his edit in the future.
I personally still prefer the piano theme as it holds more emotional weight in the scene. Or Hals suggestion of combining both if possible.
Brilliant NellsRelo and Acbagel. Let’s hold a finger on The Piano Theme for now - it gives the scene a very haunting atmosphere, which seems to be what we all really want.
I’ll wait for more opinions to see how we proceed.
My brain is fried now, having edited two soundtracks for several hours.
Loved the piano themed Imperial March, gave me goosebumps watch that scene. Well done.
These changes sound great…exactly what I’ve wanted in a Last Jedi edit. It does look quite ambitious though, do you have ETA?
For the love of God, please remove the space Vespa chase from this edit…that was hard to watch. It was like a cross over of Power Rangers, Spy Kids and Star Wars. It was too colourful, cheesy and just didn’t belong in Star Wars or at least Tatooine.
If the amount of time dedicated to the flashbacks continue you could almost make a standalone origin movie for Boba Fett. Like a prequel to the Mandalorian and than a separate Boba Fett movie for present day.
Well, after consulting with a couple people via PM, this does change things.
I’m announcing a new goal (goal, mind you) to release V2 in time for the film’s 12/20 anniversary. Failing that, Christmas. You never know, and I don’t plan to skimp, so I won’t be leaving something out and have to do a V2.1 or anything.
Thanks, Master Lawdog!
Ooooh, this is my Birthday…what a birthday present this would be 😃
I agree, I think V2 structure flows much better. It just feels like Mando and Cara Dune have history together from another adventure in their past like they’ve known each other for a long time. Great job Smudger!
Yep, fair enough…I’m watching through the lens of already having seen the S2 episodes. I need to watch it with someone who hasn’t seen the original and get there reaction.
So i´ve watched it today and have to say it´s near perfect execution, storywise and technically. Every choice smudger9 made, from my perspective, was right to tell the story of Din and Grogu to find the (a) jedi. Even if that meant, Ahsokas fight on corvus to liberate the village had to be cut. It doesn´t add anything to the story of grogu.
I loved the IMAX conversion idea when they´re fighting the krayt dragon, very neat!😃Some suspension of disbelief is needed after Din landed the razor crest on Trask (water splashing of it and algaes.
What i couldn´t identify which luke skywalker deepfake you used, smudger9? It´s certainly not the original but looks a little bit different to the one from shamook?
Do you intend to release a bluray version of episode 2?
I agree, Smudger has created another quality edit here once again and clearly a lot of time and effort has gone in to it so really appreciate this from Smudger.
Similarly, my only two criticisms is the Razorcrest landing in Trask is really out of place with the seaweed clearly seen on the Razorcrest in the background. I’m not entirely sure what Smudger had against the Razorcrest falling into the ocean like in the original.
Also, for me, cutting the fight scene between Ashoka and the Magistrate was a big disappointment with no mention of Thrawn either. The removal of the hand over of the beskar spear was on odd choice as well as Mando later picks it up after the Razorcrest is blown up. If you were watching this for first time you’d be thinking “where did that spear come from?” As it kinda just appears out of nowhere.
Other than those two things the edit was superb and really enjoyed it. Thanks again Smudger and look forward to more Stars Wars movies in the future.
Hi smudger,
Two questions:
In Mando Season 2 they have post credits scene of Boba going to Jabba’s Hut do you plan to have that scene in movie and not in post credits.
Also, were you planning using the Force theme when Luke arrives to save the day?

Awesome news…got worried you had abandoned the project!
So is V3 the completed version? As I would like to watch the completed edit.
The Sith eyes reveal works very well but I think the heroic music that plays throughout to the end of the fight might undercut the moment a little. Would it be possible to go with darker music? Maybe a hint of Anthem of Evil from TROS or the dark cave theme from TLJ?
I agree, the heroic music is a bit at odds with Rey turning to the Dark side and it should be darker music. This piece from Samual Kim might work at 2min mark as it’s good mix of heroic and dark. But I would understand if you think it’s becoming to fanedit-y
Sorry to go off topic, but Nev with the TFA edit almost completed were you planning on doing you own take on TLJ as well or was this a one off edit?
After seeing what you’re doing here I just think the are areas in TLJ that could be edited to portray Rey moving further to the dark side that other editors haven’t attempted in TLJ.
Also, in the Poe Dameron Tie-In comics the First Order stormtroopers are shown to be using Jet Packs which Poe see them flying already. It was like Lucasfilm had forgotten about canon material they had already released. But unless your delving into every book and comic most ppl would have not known this. But some canon consistency would be nice.
This is a good compromise…I think it looks great.
I still think it would look cool to have the Sith eyes during the whole fight scene to show Rey is in dark side the whole time. However, it appears this is an unpopular opinion by the majority here.
If it’s not to much extra work I vote have the Sith eyes remain during the fight to show she was using the dark side during the whole fight with Kylo.
Sensational…looks incredible!
So with everything you’ve learnt with that deleted scene in removing timestamps do you think you will ever tackle the Finn and Phasma fight scene from TLJ?
