RIP John Barry (Composer)
Time

Yeah, I've also heard about this 'incompatibility' issue, which to be honest, I can't help but feel is complete nonsense especially in this day and age ......unless it was literally recorded on the U.S.S. Cygnus!

The iTunes version is a disgrace and certainly doesn't sound as good as the 'Mask boot', this score deserves much better treatment.

Hopefully in the not too distant future, one of the specialist labels will be in a position to do something about it.

The total running time of the missing cues isn't that much but I really feel they would help to flesh out the score and to break up a little of the repetitiveness.

Anyway, fingers crossed!

Further to the conversation strand instigated by Warbler recently, his score for The Black Hole was one of the handful of elements that made that film so much more interesting than it might have been (other elements dragged it down to below what it might have been).

Indeed!

As I mentioned in my original post, it's my fav Barry score and one of my fav scores in general.

For a kids sci-fi fantasy film, the music combined with the imagery gives it such a wonderful gothic flavour.

The score is screaming out for a complete release, or a remastered 2CD complete score/original album presentation.

I had actually read that FSM-interview before and simply forgotten that he had answered it with a No. Thanks for reminding me. ;) And I agree, there's no reason not to believe him when he said so.

No prob man :)

I only wish we had a real definitive (lengthy) interview with Williams about his work on the SW saga, OT + PT.

It would be wonderful for him to talk about his approach and inspirations, etc.

Cheers.

Composer John Barry has died.

Wow, it's so horrible to write those words :(

Like many here I'm sure, I fell in love with Barry's music for The Black Hole and it has since remained my favourite score written by him and probably one of my top 5 favourite scores ever.

The man invented spy music with his work on the 007 movies and has inspired countless musicians and composers and has also enriched the lives of those who loved his work.

An incredibly talented man and whose death deeply saddens me.

RIP John, thank you for the music, your legacy will live on.

The most obvious homage to Herrman's Psycho, is the 3-note motif Williams used for the scene where our heroes emerge from the Millennium Falcon's secret compartments.

Film Score Monthly Vol 8 - 1 (Williams interview)

I personally have no problem believing this as the figure in question is such an elementary musical idea which I'm sure could be traced back to a couple of hundred years before even Herrmann.

Cool article-though I think Franz Waxman did Bride of Frankenstein

He certainly did.

You can also tell the author of the article is a big Jerry G fan by playing up his influence a little too much. Williams was already exploring 'primal' percussive ideas and atonality a decade earlier in his television work.

You can certainly hear some musical gestures in things like Lost In Space which are certainly reminiscent of what would eventually become SW.

STAR WARS: EP V "REVISITED EDITION"ADYWAN - 12GB 1080p MP4 VERSION AVAILABLE NOW

Cool clip man :)

Will you be changing the line 'young Skywalker' back to the original and more effective 'Luke Skywalker'?

I feel by the Emperor claiming that they have a new enemy and announcing him to be young Skywalker, for me at least implies a certain amount of familiarity which doesn't work in the context of that scene and the overall importance that scene plays regarding Luke and Vader.

I know this scene has been discussed to death a while back but with you mentioning that it's only a temp audio track, I was just curious.

Cheers!

Another thing to bear in mind is that Williams originally composed a different piece for the end of AOTC which would lead into the love theme.

Lucas though, with all his lack of wisdom prefered to have the IM plopped in ....nice one GL.

You can hear a second or so of what was originally intended in the Across The Stars music video at about 51 seconds in.

My God, how I would love to hear the original full piece!

This sound experience takes me back to the premiere in 1980. My sister Carol, who unfortunately passed away a year later, took me to see the film at a local theater that had been renovated and updated with Dolby. This set took me back there, and I am grateful to you for making it happen, A B C.

That's very touching indeed, thank you for sharing it.

Whether it be music, film, etc, the power to be deeply moved and even transported back somewhere of personal meaning should never be underestimated.

Cheers :)

INVAR - Those points you make about the movie are very important indeed and I've also followed those since day one and been fascinated by them.

The opening crawl, Vader and Emperor's communication and finally Luke and Vader's confrontation are for me the three most important parts in what the the psychologically inside the story is all about.

They also play a huge role in the development and understanding of Vader's character arc.

I must admit though, the line "The young rebel who destroyed the Death Star" is pretty bad, for me at least.

I feel as though the original dialogue is all that is needed, so I'll be very happy indeed if no change is made there.

Nice to read your thoughts on all that though :)

It is most certainly not "English Gent" style.

Ha, whatever you say man ...........

Frink is right though. We should stop this.

Well, it's hardly cause for alarm.

I originally made a simple comment based on something which I thought was being taken seriously, it turns out that it wasn't, not a big deal in the slightest .....or so I thought.

Then others have to throw in attempts at comic relief.

I'm here simply to share in the common interests that we have, I'm only interested in getting along with people and perhaps even as a consequence of that, become friends.

Apologies to ADYWAN for my part in taking this off topic, so regarding this minor incident, I'll leave it there.

I hate to jump in being serious incase this is all a big joke but he clearly says 'and'.

There is no dropped 'd', it may be softer due to the way the two words are joined and phrased but this is often a very common occurrence in speech especially in the English Gent style.

The Empire Strikes Back IMPERIAL "AUDIOPHILE" EDITION - Restored & Remastered Score - J. Williams & LSO (Released)
Time

Although I haven't finished listening to the entire set yet, I just thought I'd share some intials thoughts regarding ABC's newest release.

I'm from the generation that first witnessed these movies when they were originally released and since then they have played such an imoprtant role in my life and I guess, my happiness.
I've lived with and loved this music deeply for over 30 years, so when the '97 SE scores were released, it was a great joy to finally have the complete scores, good times indeed ....well kind of.

In my naivety and a certain amount a happy ignorance, I've lived with the appalling sound of TESB simply because it was the easiest and most convenient way to experience this score as a whole.
Previous CD releases did sound better but the fact that they were far from complete was the reason I found myself going back to the 'SE', even though there was always a sense of drinking fine wine from a tramp's shoe.

So what does this new release offer and why is it better than the previous 'AUDIOPHILE EDITION'?
Well, when I first listened to the 'AE' I was completely blown away by the sense of warmth that was present and the details that had been obliterated by the 'SE'.
Something like 'Snowspeeders (Luke's Rescue)' is a perfect example.

Overall, I feel this new release improves on those details even more. The strings, especially the lower strings have so much warmth and depth.
The brass and percussion still retain their power but never offend the ears by distorting. The music now sounds like a genuine, although a more operatic companion to the original SW score.
Something I feel the 'SE' denied us of.

To be honest, when a piece of work touches you so deeply, I feel no amount of words can do justice to the actual experience itself and that's kind of how I feel now.
I do however feel a responsibility to acknowledge my satisfaction and gratitude towards this release.

I realise that a huge percentage of SW fans are not necessarily fans of the music outside of the films so perhaps all of this is no big deal and obviously that's completely fine.
However, if this score 'in' and 'out' of the film is something that you cherish, I've never heard it sound better and at the risk of sounding even more stupid, this presentation has ignited genuine physical sensations that I first experienced 30 years ago.
Something that only a beautiful sonic resonance can achieve.

This new 'IMPERIAL AUDIOPHILE EDITION' along with 'Dark_Jedi & ABC's - ESB: IMPERIAL EDITION' DVD is to me such an incredible and fitting tribute to the 30th Anniversary of The Empire Strikes Back.
Once again, this is the type of work which is testament to the love that these movies and just as importantly, the music have inspired over the years.

I cannot praise this work enough and feel incredibly fortunate to have accidentally stumbled upon ABC's original AUDIOPHILE EDITION, which since then has had me following his recent endeavours with great interest.

Anyway, enough time has been spent typing ......back to the music!!
Thanks for all your hard work ABC, it is sincerely appreciated.

Cheers.

Impressive, most impressive
