GhostAlpha26: Of course we're bummed we more than likely won't see it, but we don't get all antsy about it and do a virtual storm out of the room about it.

Reading about the restoration, seeing what can be done by someone who is prepared to spend the time on it, and beeing shown examples of the results is all fascinating.

I for one am very sad to not see this version, but legally, he can't provide it. He works in the industry. That's the big difference between him and most others doing restorations. For the rest of those doing it, no-one really cares, it doesn't affect anyone really, it doesn't cross over into their 'other' working life. He does work in this exact field every day, and if he was to break the law by distributing an illegal copy of one of the most famous films of all time. Well... it would probably hurt his career a bit.

I'm thankful to be able to see into the process, see the comparison clip, see the difference a little bit of tweaking can do on the recent DVD release (which makes me want to have lots of free time to play with my copy in a video editor)... it's just completely non-constructive to come out and bitch about how things are.

If you are done with it all, if you can't take the tantilising snippets of goodness that come from the project, then by all means stop reading the threads, it's just very childish to tell everyone in such a rude manner that you're doing so.

Hey Mike,

Just got to say that after reading the interview with you, and having a look around your new site, I have to say I'm impressed even further. (Already was with your R2 animation and the work you've done so far on Star Wars)...

You seem to have carved out a nice nieche for yourself.

Oh, and also the World is Watching short was nicely directed... fine work!

One really big question is begging to be asked here....

Why even use DVD Decryptor with these fan made discs? Surely the Only purpose of it is to get around encryption, which is never an issue with these discs.

Why not just copy the disc onto your PC, and then onto another DVD disc. Or, if you have two drives, just straight from one to the other?

On another note, I completely stopped using DVD Decryptor when I discovered DVD Shrink... so very easy to use in Decrypting, shrinking, or reauthoring... create piece of work.

Just throwing my 2 cents in again... (I can't help it, it's a sickness)... basically from looking at what you've already done, and what your thoughts are around it, I have to say that the final outcome of your project is going to be something very special, and I would expect that most people here are sad that they'll never see it.

As for the changes you are doing... well, you mentioned in a reply to one of my posts that you'd been working on the portion during the tie attack where the film is 'jiggled'... I was watching just that scene a couple of days ago and MAN, now that you've mentioned it I can't stop seeing it. It does look terrible doesn't it?

Damn you!

In any case, I wouldn't get too agrieved over Daniel's comments, from my short time here I've seen him annoy many, many members here, in particular those who are creating restorations... basically, until he creates his own, he doesn't have much right to lambast others for not doing it the way he would choose... I mean, you have said it's for you and your friends only.

Are you going to throw us some new screen grabs and descriptions of your work soon? Reading about and seeing what you've done is extremely interesting.

Simon

Big thanks to Grisan for the covers... I too would be happy to compensate the original creators for the entire set. This is a wonderful piece of work... (Oh, and by the way, I don't mean this to sound like I'm now saying "Dr Gonzo's version is crap, it's just terrible etc." I mean, it still does have a commentary track, and it is anamorphic for what it's worth... plus it's been around for a lot longer. It's just that last night, when I was supposed to be going to bed I just kept watching more and more scenes from this new version, just loving the crispness of it...)

I did notice some dot crawl in the opening words I think, but didn't really notice it in the selected scenes I watched afterwards.

Oh... and do you think it's time that there should now be an official feedback thread for the MM version much like the others?

OK, just burnt and have watched selected bits of the MM version... and MAN I am impressed, I mean the image is just so much clearer than the Dr Gonzo version. The menus are sensational (Although the inability to choose things like Audio track or crawl selection without it jumping to the movie is a tad annoying.) as are the extras.

One thing I'm unsure about is the audio in comparison to the DrGonzo version... I'm still trying to work out if there is an ascertainable difference... but I really should be going to bed!

On that note, does anyone know of a good scene to check for surround sound in SW? Or is it predominately a front soundstage film (Jedi has some great moments in the Dr Gonzo version that's for sure)?

I eagerly await the other two films being available for download... and whole heartedly congratulate the creators of this stunning transfer... excellent job! And while you may not have wanted it out... you can rest assured you've made many people happy and helped preserve some great films by it happening.

Moth3r - You really are showing off how sensational your transfer is looking so far by doing this aren't you? I have the Dr Gonzo version, and think that while a little softer than the usual DVD quality it scrubs up pretty good from my DVD player to tv... and I have just finished the MM version (Just seen online that it's finished... want to get home to look at it!)... but man, yours does look stunning.

And that you notice these things, and know these things shows what hands this restoration is in. (One wonders if Lucasfilm is watching your site with view to hiring you for the next release of the movie on HDDVD or whatever it comes out on).

My previous comments should not be taken in any way stating that I don't think what you're doing is worthwhile... in fact I am dying that you are not releasing this to the masses... All I can do is envy you sitting down to watch this when it's done... that would be a great experience, and one that certainly sounds deserved.

I will hush now, as really... Mike has stated his intentions with his project and by god the outcomes so far are stunning, that they surpass the current DVD really speak for the quality of this work... and that is where I suppose I am just thinking "Gee, how damn cool would it be to have a clean, colour corrected version of the original movie as it stood then". It just shows how impressed I am with what you've done. (And from reading all the work you've done on this so far, the immense time it's taken too)

Long time reader, first time poster...

After browsing over your site, I must say I am amazingly impressed with your work... it shows a level of knowledge and commitment that would seem to far outshadow many others.

I do have a couple of questions:
a) Are you planning on doing all three movies, or just Star Wars
b) Many here have said that you've said that you're never releasing these, but I don't think you've said that have you... you aren't allowed to sell, or screen commercially the results of your efforts, but if a bittorrent happened to get out, perhaps one that was only for those who had already bought the DVD wouldn't be frowned upon. (Which would rule me out as I refuse to buy them until a proper version of the OT is available for purchase)
c) I know that you have very eloquently stated that your intention is to preserve the 'experience' rather than the film as closely as it actually was when released, and I'm in agreeance with you up to a point there... there's those that seem to obsess about it far too much... I mean really, does it really matter if it says Episode IV or not at the begining of the crawl? How does that affect the actual movie... What I'm a little iffy about (don't get me wrong though, I'm very interested in your final version) is the 'fixing' of effects they didn't get right back then, like the speeder smudge under it, or the little jumps due to cuts for effects etc... I'm all for being able to still see those things as it was what was achievable THEN... from a film history point of view, being able to say to someone "See, see how great this film is, how amazing it really does look? And this was all done in 1976!" is surely of major worth for future generations of film buffs and students etc.? With the actual releases that Lucas provides it's a case of "See, see how good that bit... no, that bit there... no, not that bit... wait, ok this bit, and that over there, but not the windows there... all of that, well, minus the CG creature over there... that was done in 1976! Oh, wait... no... no, that was 'fixed up in 1997'"... it doesn't sit well.... Your version, while not having the CG etc (Well, actually it does now doesn't it... really, with the laser flash), does have 'clean ups' of original effects... not to their original versions, but better than original...

I suppose I don't really care, as I do have the best available 'untouched' versions around from prior LD-DVD conversion... and it's certainly watchable... so for me I have the ability to be able to watch them again... but I do wonder if there will ever be a widely available version that will ever be able to be studied by special effects students of the future with the simple point that 'And it was all done in 1976'....
