Info Wanted: Question regarding 'Jurassic Park 3D'... (and info)
Time

True. I don’t have the equipment to do so, unfortunately. A lot of this adjustment starts to become highly subjective in a way.

If you look at the background of the comparison I posted you’ll see some various plants and foliage. In the original they look very washed out and don’t likely appear that way in person. In my adjustment their color is much more rich, and likely closer to how they would naturally appear.

Now, as for the intention of the filmmaker - Spielberg officially signed off on the color timing changes made to the 3D 4k rescan so I guess he likes pink skies and such. As for me, I just want the warmth and grain of film while still being close to the natural appearance of all the excellent set design and production pieces used in the movie.

The adjustments I made to my 1080p copy were done in Premiere. Increased saturation (no other color timing adjustments done) and some brightness/contrast/gamma settings, very subtly used. I referenced my large collection of production photos for saturation levels.

Resolution is 1280x1080 with 32,000 bitrate. 28gb. I adjusted the saturation and brightness/contrast/exposure a little. Dark scenes were too crushed to reveal full image at times. Very heavy handed brightening done by me on my copy on the Trex paddock scene since it was impossibly dark initially. My scan is a “quick and dirty” 1080 scan.

Some of my screenshots were later cropped in photoshop so I think that’s what you’re seeing. The video file has the full image shown. The night scenes are indeed pretty crushed unfortunately - added some pics of the dark shots to the same album I posted earlier:

The 3D JP release also contained a few VERY subtle CG fixes. They removed the potted tree and safety cable in the shot where the Trex flips the Explorer over, removed the fishing lines that open up the Dilophosaurs gills, repainted/replaced the backdrop sky when Alan is in the tree with the kids (it was clearly netting before) and one or two more IIRC. Very subtle fixes but tastefully done.

The cropping is indeed super close on the 3D version since they needed to cut some horizontal data for the conversion. Once I noticed how pink/magenta the 3D version is it really started to bug me.

One last example showing how ‘blue’ the laserdisc/DVD (and maybe the VHS? Haven’t compared personally) transfer is.

Here’s the 3D remaster with their new color timing:

I of course can’t speak to the Matrix thing since I’m new here and am totally clueless about that situation 😉

For the colors here I simply added a little saturation and adjusted some brightness/contrast/gamma settings since the entire scan was rather dark and lifeless. No other color timing/tint/adjustments were made though so the actual hue is accurate to what was originally filmed - thank goodness. The pinks and magentas in the 3D bluray were overbearing and the strong “cool” wash on the DVD didn’t sit well with me either.

New to the community and don’t have a spleen invite/account but I wanted to chime in on the open matte Jurassic Park. I’m a long time die-hard fan of the film and have an open matte copy of the film in high definition and bitrate. A friend scanned his friends copy and burned it to a HD for me. I cut the reels together and added a little saturation but left the matte open. Is the spleen copy cropped at all?

Here are a few grabs of my copy. The blacks are very crushed in the Trex paddock scene unfortunately but the rest is a drastic improvement in color timing over the DVD and 3D Bluray

My apologies that the shots are fairly Explorer-centric but the accurate colors of the car in this version were very important to me since they look so different in the other releases. These snapshots are from Jan 2015 and I only have a handful of screengrabs since then.
