Info Wanted: are there any lossless masters of ld captures?
Time
so moth3r sees a negligible difference. citizen, what difference do you see, if any, of the huffyuv YUY2 files to a ~4mbps mpeg2 from that 'master'?
of course, no one should have to upload for several weeks, and 60+gb per movie is too much. however, as an example, about a month ago a 'release' was posted to a usenet group where the total size with 10% par2s (recovery files) was a little over 30gb. normally the releases in that group are 10-20gb, but the high bitrate and run time made it huge, but it went thru 100% complete for the people that did d/l it. btw, i am not directing this to you citizen, but to your method and similar ones.

karyudo, that is exactly the response i was looking for. i am sure you, and others, have paid immense sums for the collections you have, and would be concerned about rendering that investment moot. but i see it this way:
this sub-forum is about the preservation of the original trilogy. good. imho, that translates to 'those that have the time, money, knowledge, and experience to preserve the original trilogy'. not very many people fit into that category. now, many ppl can satisfy one of those requirements, and some might even fit two. obvious reality is that money and time are the hardest to obtain. the point is that true fans, who indeed want to ensure ppl from this generation and beyond can enjoy the o-ot, should be able to work together with others in the community to find solutions to make great preservations come about. as it stands, there are a few children who say 'i have everything to enjoy o-ot best way possible and you dont, so there'. however, as adults they could say 'well i have some sets, joe has the others, bill has a great player, bob knows alot about conversions with much experience, and jill has too much time on her hands. if we establish trust and work together, we can make an excellent offering to the community.' btw, this is not directed just to you karyudo, but to all who have been blessed with the money to afford such collections.

so if the community is blessed with something like this, would those with expensive collections suddenly have worthless junk? i dont think so. someone could show their collection of all the best transfers made and it wouldnt be/feel the same as someone who had the actual lds, or a top-knotch ld player, etc. however, both of those ppl would be able to enjoy the o-ot in a great way, not simply as one with a much superior experience versus a respectable but less superior experience.

so in essence we could succumb to the dark side and be greedy, or be with the force and share for the cause. i might get flamed for this, but hopefully some of you will understand what i am talking about.

Info Wanted: are there any lossless masters of ld captures?

has any release/capturer offered a lossless (ie NOT mpeg2) master that was used for the dvd release? im curious because i would like to see how much info/detail, etc gets lost in the mpeg2 process and am assuming the lossless masters arent that big. i know this could only be accomplished if they upped it to usenet and had a very fast upload speed.

“how could you even play this on your tv/projector, etc?”
i only care to play it on my pc, from hdd, w/ crt monitor.
“someone would have to upload for weeks for all the films for that kind of request”
yes, BUT this would save others who cant afford the ld sets and excellent ld player to obtain masters and make their own mpeg2 edits at a much lower price than just starting from scratch. i think a raw capture would help the most amount of ‘preservers’, so they could decide their own post-processing to do.

yur thoughts plz.

since de-seing the official 2004 dvds has been allowed...what about just (color correction and other technical problems) on the 2004 dvds? of course anyone can do that on their own, but is discussion allowed on 'spit-shining the polished turds'? i wouldnt mind a proper/correct re-code of the 2004 dvds (ie w/out regard to 'correcting/fixing' the o-ot differences), so that way the unchanged frames (content-wise) can be (somewhat) comparable to the o-ot ld transfers (of the same specific frames).

i think md5 checksums would be great. might take a day of creating them, but an md5 checksum for each file on each disc is good. perhaps tr47,cowclops, or anyone else who has received a 'direct' shipment should be able to make it. you could also torrent this md5 file and up it to usenet for maximum help.

How bout Cow47?

ah well ... my vote is for

"v1 & v2 Transfer by : Cowclops" <- put that REALLY small
"v2 Transfer TR47 APPROVED" (or recommended or editor's choice or something like that) <- put that REALLY big
"(some or all?) hardware for v2 provided by : TR47" <- put that i guess medium size

and for even more confusion put:
"DVD Cover Art by : Spanky Pete"

^^^ NO JUST KIDDING ON THAT ONE

You cant say it any better. And all this focus on the video leads me to beleive the audio (was/will be) captured with an sb live with generic cables?! please, can some1 give more specifics on how the audio (is/will be) handled?

i applaud the use of PCM versus ac3. If you cant notice a diff between dvd5 and 9, then lets stick to the format most COMPATIBLE with players (dvd5). dl is too infant to realistically use at this point in time. Wave(uncompressed) versus ac3 (lossy compression)?! the choice is CLEAR. this is the star wars soundtrack/score we are talking here. one of the greatest made, and to even consider using lossy compression on it is insulting. i dont care how much space it takes up.
