When did the prequels officially suck?
Time

Well I was curious to see whether this enormous fan base for the Prequels and Clone Wars stuff really exists. Perhaps I am an old fossil.

So I went to theforce.net which most people seem to think is the definitive fan site, and looked at the forums:

11,000 topics in classic star wars

5,000 topics in prequels

2,000 topics in clone wars

OK, so clearly we must make allowance for the new stuff being newer. Nonetheless, I feel pretty confident in stating that the classic star wars are still more popular than the prequels and clone war things.  (Another data point, box office for the clone wars movie was low).

Topic title edit is too small

Yes, it is Firefox 3, on Windows 2000.

Indeed, it seems to increase the size of the text box with text size, but not to a big enough size.

I turned off Firefox "minimum font size" (advanced) but that doesn't help.

My default font is set to Lucida Sans Unicode, size 14. Changing it to 12 doesn't help (in fact you seem to be overriding all the default fonts).

Um ... what can I say... it's nearly a bog standard ff3 install ... I disabled all add-ons...

How I would've made the prequels if I had the same resources as GL.
Time

I think this is focussing too much on technical aspects. The main thing they needed was better scripts. Secondly, some decent direction of actors. The rest of it would follow, including that a good script would not include such silliness as jokey robot soldiers and absurd love scenes, and the actors would have more to work with. Most of the cast being at least competent in other movies.

Excessive use of vertical screen space

Just to finalise a point here - my res is 1152 x 864. That doesn't mean I give all of it to the browser window.

The forums are getting worse with all the multitude of stickied/announcement posts - often it's one and a half windows worth of headers to get to the real content.

Well keep up the incremental work - eventually you should have a compelling package hopefully.

Lucas brought up some really clever ideas and turned it into a movie.

Whoa.. seriously, you thought this was clever?
This is a grab bag of cheesey UFO cliches from the last 30 years. Now granted, the cheesey familiarity is part of the fun, but it's very very far from clever.

Do you not mind having to constantly scroll to see content? Or is it that you don't actually see the space? Or that your monitor is so large that it doesn't matter?

The risk of reinventing the wheel (forum software) is that Jay will have to make a lot of effort to cover all the design decisions that other software has done, including active user research, not just listening to the vocal few who are willing to comment on forum design. While his forum software is OK, it has a lot of quirks that others have already solved - and doesn't seem to offer any unique feature that others don't have - so it is not compelling...

(Continuing from thread in announcement)

OT Forum screen space usage

the red parts are the white space (and ads). See how little of the page is actually useful content?

Part of this is probably because the forum only fits horizontally with a browser window of > 1024 pixels. Even though monitors are getting bigger, that's excessive as a lot of people browse with a window smaller than full screen.

Moving into the content, the unused avatar area (turned off for me wastes lots more space).

Well now I've seen Crystal Skull and my reaction is a resounding "meh". It's not groaningly bad like most of the prequels, but it is overdone and flat like the better parts of ep 3. I can't remember a single standout good line or scene, and several that I squirmed a bit because they kind of sucked - most of the chase in the forest for example, and the fake-looking ants. Somewhat incoherent story too - just a grab bag of locales and ideas.
In the end, just an average action movie....

70mm screening

OK, yes. Now I am starting to really dislike Mr Lucas. Whatever he was, now hes a petulant old man who meanly refuses to sell what he allowed every man and his dog to pay him hundreds of millions of dollars for in 1977.

Like others, I think that once you release a film for public consumption, YES, you should give up the right to absolute control over it. At the least preservation in the highest possible quality should be possible.

Otherwise, I'm sorry, but the copyright deal is off.

THough most of the reviews are positive, this one is interestig:

http://chud.com/articles/articles/14781/1/REVIEW-INDIANA-JONES-AND-THE-KINGDOM-OF-THE-CRYSTAL-SKULL-DEVIN039S-TAKE/Page1.html

"It's almost too easy to bash George Lucas, but his fingerprints are all over this film. Right from the opening moments of the movie - hot rodding teenagers racing an army convoy, calling to mind American Graffiti - his presence looms large. He's there in the cute CGI prairie dogs that appear three different times. He's there when Shia LaBeouf's Mutt learns to swing like Tarzan by watching cute little monkeys. And he's really there in occasionally abysmal CGI action sequences that miss the entire point of what made the Indiana Jones movies work in the first place. This is the most George Lucas of all the Indiana Jones films, and that's not a great thing."

New forum software - please read!
Time
Well done Jay, although I find it bizarre that you write your own forum software instead of using any of the dozens of highly functional open source forums...

You've given us the option to turn off avatars and signatures. Hurrah! I can turn off everyone's useless joke pictures that take up more space on screen than their one line of text ...

However, when I turn off avatars, it still shows a large space with "generic person" image. The idea of turning off images for me, is not to save download time but to stop wasting screen space...

So could you make it that when avatars are off, the space for the avatar is not displayed?
Thanks.

Anyone else here have a love/hate relation with Revenge of the sith ?
Time
I really can't see why anyone thinks ROTS is any better than the other two. It has all the same weaknesses and even makes some new mistakes. There is a few decent scenes, as in the others. I guess at least this one focuses on the core plot instead of useless side-issues, but even then it wastes time on the wookie world and blah blah.

Let em go. There might be some individual pieces that are OK cinema, but collectively just some dumb movies to be forgotten.
