Harmy's STAR WARS Despecialized Edition HD - V2.7 - MKV (Released)
Time

Hi Harmy,

I just got around to watching your 01 Introducing the DeEd WP2_1 and I was curious which version of the VHS and laser discs you used when you show this screenshot?

I don't recognize it.  I have several American VHS versions from the 80s and 90s and would be happy to send you pictures of the covers and cassettes if you want to use those instead (or in addition)

I've been Googling for a bit and can't find any proof to put behind this, but I swear that on the VHS copy of Star Wars we had when I was a kid, the blaster shots by the crew of the Tantive IV during the opening skirmish were not red. I almost want to say that the blaster shots were all changed to red for the THX remastered 1996 tapes, but it might actually have been for the SE release and on. If that's the case, then some of the source material for Despecialized must have featured this - is it in any of them? And if it is, are there any plans to restore it? I'm pretty sure the Tantive IV crew's blaster bolts were blue, while the stormtroopers' were red. Or I might just be crazy.

blasters bolts were always red.  The only blue one was when Leia was stunned.

Thank you so much for the detailed response. It has always bothered me wondering which one was correct. While I prefer to watch Harmy' s version for its clarity and overall correctness, it's still a blast to watch the originals I grew up with. My next question would be then if this means the original theatrical release featured the same color errors.

This is probably the most controversial scene in the Despecialized version.  There was ample discussion about this scene around page 236 of this thread if you want to look over it.

Long story short, each person remembers that scene differently.  The brightness would have been different theater to theater depending on the projector and how good the projectionist was and each early VHS version had different brightness levels.  Not to mention the different settings of TVs etc. This means most of us have a different perspective of which version is "correct".

Harmy did change the brightness between v2.0 and v2.5

Great clip. I doubt anyone will ever be able to do this but one thing I've always wanted to see in a "Special Edition" version of the Star Wars movies is realistic reflections on the windows of Millenium Falcon/X-wing interior shots. You can tell that there's no glass window panes between the interior of the ship and the exterior and it's something that's always bothered me a little bit. Obviously this is something that would be very difficult to do so I'm not neccesarily asking for it but it would be cool to see.

Maybe the Star Wars universe has a technology to make perfectly clear windows without a reflection.  I think having reflections would be too distracting.

On a similar note, the asteroids that cast shadows on the actors is inconsistent.  While that's not ady's fault since it's like that in the official versions, it is more noticeable now that there are more debris in the field.  But adding the extra shadows would also be too distracting.

My favorite part of the clip is the new TIE crash at the end.

I lent my DE copies to one of my friends.  He and his wife have both never seen star wars before.  It was interesting to hear them talk about it.  They know Luke's father is some weird twist but don't know who.  There are now 2 new star wars fans who have only seen your work and not the special editions.

Anyway meanwhile I am DE-less so I watched the blu-ray for the first time since I got it. I couldn't take the crushed blacks and high contrasts for too long and had to stop watching it.  Luckily I still have a working VHS so watched my pan and scan hbo recording from '85ish.

Thanks again for all your hard work.

For Sale: USA: Star Wars Action Figures (1995-2004)
Time

Most aren't worth much.  However there are a few that might be worth something.

For example, the original POTF2 figures in 95 (with the red blade cards) had a few error products.  For example, after the initial batch, they decided to make the lightsaber blades shorter.  There was a brief period of time when they packaged the short blades in the old long trays.  There was also something about boba fetts with different paint jobs on his hands (circles or no circles etc) Those used to be worth a lot but I don't know about anymore.

I don't know about the newer stuff

Discussion: How many of you (still) have any of the old Kenner action figures?
Time

I still have about 30 loose star wars figures although I have lost most of the weapons over the years (damn blue shag carpet). And I have X-Wing, Millennium Falcon, Slave I and AT-AT vehicles but they might be missing stuff too.

When I got older I started collecting mint carded figures to continue my star wars obsession. I got really into it around the time of the Special Edition and was able to get the complete 12-back set plus a few other early key figures before the prices went really crazy.

I hope to sell them for a large sum of money in a few years to pay for my kid's college tuition.

Harmy,
I haven't been around much over the past few years due to real life issues but I just wanted to say how impressed I am with 2.5 release. My last download was 2.0 when it came out and I've watched it hundreds of times as my goto of version Star Wars. When my children are old enough to watch it, this will be the only version they will know. I'll try to scrape some cash together for a donation.

Thanks again!

On a related topic, have any of you other parents out there figured out what to do when your kids only know of the pre-special edition versions and they encounter the other versions at friend's houses or the potential arguments on the school yard?

"Greedo doesn't shoot at Han, Han shoots before Greedo can do anything!"
"nu-huh"
"ya-huh"
etc.

Maybe I obsess over this too much.

Just wanted to comment on the very bright Obi-wan scene on tatooine.  I have a tape of  the original 1983 HBO presentation of star wars that my uncle taped for me (he had a vhs recorder and we didn't at the time).  I may be misremembering because I don't think I have watched the tape in over 20 years but I'm 99% sure that scene was just as bright.  Watching the Despecialized edition was the first time that scene looked "right" to me!

I thought of another change to make in the movie.  I hope this doesn't get lost in the pile of trailer comments.

I think it would be cool to show yoda actually doing something to the ship so Luke can't control his landing when trying to land on degobah.  Right now it isn't clear why the ship goes all crazy and luke crashes.  Do you think it is a good idea to add somekind of flash or some other indication that the x-wing has a power outage or EMP blast or something.  This could imply that yoda is controlling the ship so it lands near him instead of on the other side of the planet.

what do you think?
