Thought it might be useful to post a summary, seeing as this thread was started over two years ago.

Song of the South DVD versions

• Piratebay/mininova (superhappyfun?) version - sourced from Japanese laserdisc, has burned-in subtitles during the songs.

• “Coal Black Easter Egg” Version & Cyber-EFX version - both sourced from Hong Kong/Korean/Chinese LD or UK VHS, no-one knows exactly. No burned-in subtitles, but poor video quality. Small selection of extras.

• Mentor version - barebones DVD encode, sourced from DVB cap off BBC broadcast. Best picture quality, but some interlacing/blending issues with PAL conversion.

• Doctor M, JoeyO & Rowman 2-DVD release - disc one is the movie sourced from Mentor's DVD and restored to NTSC, disc two features a comprehensive selection of extras and special features.

I think these are the main versions out there, if I've got anything wrong, please post in this thread.

Thanks for this list, it's what I was looking for.

Is the Doctor M/JoeyO/Rowman version of the BBC broadcast available anywhere? I see the original Mentor release is available on myspleen, but I'd prefer it in NTSC. Thanks!

Does anyone have a link for this 2 disc version?

A Japanese LD copy is up at the spleen. That makes 3 copies there: PAL VHS, BBC, and Japan LD! :)

@perkyporker: What problems are you having upgrading the TRV-16G? Does it have the terrible degrading pinch rollers like the 16-CL?

As the TRV-16G comes, it is only capable of capturing video tape quality. An upgrade will allow it to capture at dvd quality.

I haven't done an inspection of the unit since I am sending it in for an upgrade.  The thing looks like it has never been  used.

Right now, I'm just saving up for the upgrade and trying to decide who to send it to.

A couple of people who have responded seem to be under the impression that I meant I could make a transfer of this 16mm film.   And I could once I get the machine upgraded.

But, if you read back through the post you'll see that my 16mm film of SOTS is a very poor and aged 16mm.  It is all yellow and there is dirt crawling all over it. Just watching it makes you want to go take a shower.

But in the original discussion of it skyjedi2005 suggested that the audio could still be worth salvaging.  And that is what my last post was discussing. I didn't mean to get anybody's hopes up for a nice transfer of this film.

An excellent transfer of this 16mm print would look like garbage.

It's been a while since I've gotten back to this board. I've recently acquired a piece of equipment that will capture 16mm film and it''s audio really well.  I need to send it out for an upgrade that will take me a couple of months.

I can't remember who it was that expressed an interest in the audio from my 16mm film of SOTS but if you would post we can maybe discuss getting a wav from the 16mm to you, but like I say it will still be a couple of months.

I went searching on Google for info about 16mm audio. It led me back to this site where a thread said this:

===============

Heard back from Belbucus regarding the mono soundtrack:

While it might yield a useful reference, 16mm soundtracks have a fairly limited frequency response – around 150 to 5000 Hz with a dynamic range of about 40 dB.  A 35mm Academy mono optical track is more like 45 to 8000 Hz with a dynamic range of around 48 dB.

From wikipedia, the linear track on a VHS tape has a frequency response of 100 to 10000Hz, so was probably a better source for the audio - certainly in terms of high-frequency content.

================

So, I'm wondering if it would be just a waste of effort when you can get the soundtrack off of the PAL or the Jap/HK laserdisc.

What about the audio on the print is it still intact ?

Would that not have value to a preservation effort.

Well, it's been a long while since I've watched it, but if I remember right, the sound was good.  But I no longer have a projector - would have to find another.

If I could figure out how to capture the audio correctly so that you have the best possible audio from it, it would be worth a shot.

Hello all. This is fascinating that you have this and I would really like to know how I can download a copy.

I also have the bootleg that others posted caps of and have always been disappointed with the quality - but I figured it's the best we'd ever get.

Also, I actually have a 2-reel 16mm print of the film that is terrible.  If someone wants to trade something or just buy it, I'd love to get rid of it. It's just taking up space.  You pay the shipping though ;0)

Anyway, if someone could send me the links for downloading I'd really be appreciative.

thanks.
