The Definitive Theatrical Audio Mix?
Time

OpenRift412 said:

So I’m curious, which variation of the 1977 audio mix would you guys consider to be the definitive version? I’d imagine it would either be the 70mm six-track mix or the 35mm stereo mix. What do you guys think?

To me that kinxd of easy. It would most likely a 7.1 Dolby Multi-track sound system but if I remember correctly it might not have been available back then it was just play old Dolby 2 track Stereo Sound.

Anyone else think Empire Strikes Back's Special Edition is actually better than the Theatrical Cut?

My vote no. The suspense of the Wampa scene is reduced by showing it too much, expanding Cloud City is nice but IMO calls too much attention to itself, using Ian would’ve been better if he wasn’t delivering his lines like he’s literally reading from cue cards, recycling footage from ROTJ to show Vader returning to his shuttle was pointless, and, no, getting rid of ‘Bring my shuttle’ for me was a big no no. I will agree though ESB is the more tolerable of the SEs.

I agree with you 100% I see you noticed the Vader Dialogue change and the Vader going to the Death Star was unecessary as well.

Although I really hate the Special Editions for ANH and ROTJ, ESB’s Special Edition is different to me. It doesn’t really change much from the film other than a few things like Ian playing the Emperor and showing the wampa creature, both of which in my opinion actually improve the film. Only the “Bring my shuttle” line being changed really bothered me.
I especially liked that they opened up Sky City, an idea that actually came from Kirshner himself. Though the matte paintings of the Theatrical Cut hold a special place in my heart, the CGI rendition of the city is still acceptable and thankfully it’s the only time a practical effect was replaced, which is another thing I love: One thing that pissed me off about ANH’s Special Edition was taking practical effect shots and replacing them with CGI, especially because the CGI looks worse than the original shots (Even for the Death Star battle, but for some reason most people actually think the CGI version of that one looks better) but ESB’s Special Edition doesn’t do that and while it still adds some CGI shots: No practical effect was replaced, something I really appreciate.

Are CRAZY you must going mad? The original theatre is the best out all three but some of the special insert shot do bug me. The “Wampa” arm cut off shot that stunk it too away the mystery of it. Also and some of the new dialogue did bothered me somewhat. What your take?

Discussion: Star Wars Model Kits - why so expensive?

Have they jumped up in price of late mate - or is it a thing that being going on for a while?

What sort of lines of models are you looking at?

I used to be somewhat up on the Star Wars models - though there were so many differing toy and model lines… they all began to blur into one, and I began to lose interest. Especially given the prices of some of them, or lack of availability as collectors and scalpers would snap many of the more intriguing models and toys up.

Mostly I am looking for the AT-AT I saw them on Amazon for $74.90 early this year 9since then they have shot up pretty good to $150.00 im still going to one. I just a Snowspeeder but its very small I thought I would be bigger. plus I am going to have to paint it silver cause its a dull plastic grey colour. So after those two I will get more rebel ships. but I do want the Slave 1 That ship is a very exotic design. don’t you think so?

Who Would Like To See An Original Star Wars Re-Release Theatrical Showing?

Once things get back to normal, I’d love for them to re-release ALL of the Star Wars movies in the theater again. I remember them doing that for the Marvel movies a few years ago. It was great!

I’d even be up for the krayt dragon episode of The Mandalorian (S2E1) on the big screen. It’s very cinematic. The same goes for the last for episodes of The Clone Wars (Siege of Mandalore).

I still want to see the 3-D versions. The trench run and speeder bikes would be awesome!

There’s no part of Star Wars I wouldn’t show up to the theater for, once things get back to normal.

The last paragraph you stated I will agree absoulutly. After seeing the OT films in the theatre AGAIN yes I was at the theatres at the time when they first came out it was GLORIOUS If I see those films i could literally die and go to heaven peacefully. oh more thing “I want that Luke Skywalker Lightsaber No excuses”

The theater I go to is doing private theater showings where you can bring your own Blu-Ray and they’ll play it for you and up to 25 people. I think I’m going to bring 4K77 one of these days.

If you don’t mind my asking, what theater is this?

Cumberland 12 Cinemas, Plattsburgh, NY

I was wondering the same… where is theatre is to see it like that.

Despecialized or the Special Editions; Which do you prefer - and why?

zxs_2020 said:

Despecialized hands down. Every one of the SE (and especially the DVD/HD versions movies) has at least one change that ruins the movie for me.

Your Correct. I get you and agree with you absoulutly Though I did like the “Cloud City Flyover” and entering “Mos Eisely” on Lukes Speeder but those are THE ONLY changes (or additions) ill ever admit to out of all three of O.T. films.

I grew up in the “Prequel Era”, however my best memories are watching original VHS copies of the films. The Despecialized Editions are by far the better cuts to me. Everything that makes Star Wars special is in those cuts. The only change I actually like, and it’s a minor one, is the celebration song on Endor. I absolutely love the version they inputted into the Special Editions. That said, it’s minor enough that the every Despecialized Edition, to me, is head and shoulders above the Special Edition edits.

Poor you. You missed out on what was (probably) one the greatest experiences of my life you dont know what it was like to be in theatre when it the originals first cam out.

I’m a historical purist. Give me all films (not just Star Wars) as they were seen by audiences in their original theatrical runs, warts and all. If there are multiple versions (like the 70mm vs 35mm ESB), include both so I watch each version. If there are later re-edited special editions or director’s cuts or whathaveyou, include those too. Film history is important and various iterations of a film should be properly preserved and made available to anyone who wishes to see them.

As for the original Star Wars Trilogy, I prefer the 4KXX versions both because they are the highest quality restorations (official or not) and, more importantly, they are the most “pure”. Meaning they are sourced as much as humanly possible from original, pre-special edition, film prints. They aren’t reconstructions that try to mimic the original (as amazing as Harmy’s work has been), they ARE the original. But, of course, 4K80 isn’t complete yet…

So yeah, I definitely prefer the original cuts to any version of the SE. But if I’m going to watch an SE, I don’t mind the ‘97 or the brand new ‘19 versions. The 2005 dvd and 2011(?) blu ray versions are pure and utter garbage that I’ll never watch.

Same here. PERIOD!

Sounds like a good plan. What versions will you be putting on?

I most likely be watching the 2004 editions. I downloaded them from a online movie website and they are perfect working oder.

Most likely have the 2004 editions. I had them in the early 00s on DVD but after i lost those I then looked for 4K digital digital copies online @ download movie websites. anything other I would to buy the anthology and go broke or Ill have to look very very hard for the 2004 DVDs at a comic or at vintage DVD movie store. either way It will be hard on me.
