The Mandalorian I -an alternative cut (RELEASED)
Time

My edit serves as an alternative to smudger9’s The Mandalorian: A Vergence in the Force.

My less than creatively titled, The Mandalorian I, basically merges episodes 1-3 & 7-8 with The Mandalorian’s first job from episode 1 now occurring between the events of episodes 3 and 7 (a heavily edited/abbreviated version of this scene). Current runtime is 2hrs,43min but I’m hoping to trim it down to somewhere in the 2hrs,35min range.

At the moment a rough cut exists without an opening and without end credits.

I’m only making this because I dislike episode 4 (extremely) as well as the other “filler” episodes, and think that Cara Dune’s reintroduction in episode 7 is sufficient enough to imply a history between her and Mando.

I’m open to feedback and sharing if there’s interest but I’m mainly doing this for my own pre-season-2 rewatch.

Gates of Hell Anthology - WIP
Time

Currently beginning the undertaking of condensing essential scenes from Fulci’s loosely connected Gates of Hell trilogy (House by the Cemetery/ City of the Living Dead/ The Beyond) in order to create a feature-length anthology film. Still working out how to structure/present these condensed films within the framework of an anthology film, but the idea I’m working with atm is using certain scenes from house by the Cemetery as a sort of connective tissue.

  1. A Machete Order Prequel Edit
  2. First Order, Last Jedi
    Both by TriggeredPuppy

Both Prequel & Sequel Star Wars Trilogies are better rewatched as radically reedited 2-in-1’s. TriggeredPuppy is up to task.

For his PT, he judicially reduces TPM to a radically innovative introduction sequence of mainly its grand lightsaber duel (but with better justification than seen in previous 2-in-1s). Beyond this no other broad narrative details are altered. As a single film, this serves as a pulpy and mostly cringeless experience. Nothing cut out except for the omitted infamous/exceptional Darth Plegius tale scene will be missed.

In his ST edit, he’s much more daring using very little TFA and just enough TRoS to structure the film largely around TLJ making Kylo Ren this feature’s irredeemable big bad. With only a few costume and staging inconsistencies that can be overlooked on the strength of the overall stronger and more focused narrative and character arc revisions. This is the go-to for rewatches.

Once you have watched the series, please give me feedback on it here.
So far I’ve had feedback about the hardcoded subtitles in chapters 26-30 and the low video/sound quality. In terms of the subtitles, I will be taking those out by the end of May, and I have decided I will be purchasing the blu-ray versions of all the seasons so I can do a HD version of the edits, which I predict will be ready by the end of July. In the meantime whilst people are happy to watch the SD version please let me know if there was anything you believe didn’t work well so I can make these amendments in the updated HD version.

Also let me know if there’s any other series you think this feature-length “chapter” format might work well with, I’m happy to make more! I was thinking of doing a Twin Peaks one, which includes material from the ‘Fire Walk with Me’ movie, the original series and the new ‘Return’ series, compiling it down to about 20 movies.

Thank you

Any update on the Twin Peaks edits?

Alien: Vast Ships of Fools (a Prometheus & Covenant 2-in-1) (Released)
Time

cut list & alterations: Prometheus
-the film now opens with Alien: Covenant’s intro
-cut the engineer black goo ritual/panspermia scene
-cut the archaeological dig site scene with Shaw & Charlie
-cut most of Shaw’s dream but left in an abstract clip from this sequence to show that David 8 is eavesdropping on Shaw’s dreams (David confesses what he’s learned much later on)
-completely cut tropey mess hall scene
-completely cut briefing with Weyland’s hologram appearance, since the purpose of the mission is reiterated in later dialogue and the themes that this scene bullet points are better shown and said elsewhere
-cut Christmas tree scene
-merged the first and second outings to the engineer temple, for so many reasons
-Added deleted scene of Milbourne discovering a benign wormlike alien lifeform
-cut all references to Fiefield and Milbourne being lost and alone in the temple & deleted most scenes that occur aboard the Prometheus at this time, especially sandstorm/weather/time of day references
-following the demise of Milbourne, recut a brief scene of Janek ordering chance to leave with him on a rescue mission to the engineer temple, as well as scenes showing the back of a rover and truck heading towards the temple
-removed sandstorm sequence so that this outing ends with Charlie being evac’d and then eventually getting BBQ’d at the Prometheus’ front door
-removed all scenes of the engineer head being analyzed
-removed Charlie and Shaw’s sex scene and conversation about children
-removed Vickers and Janek’s booty call scene
-removed David 8 bagging an urn, bringing urn back aboard the Prometheus, and creating a black goo cocktail, mode of infection is ambiguous, likely a direct result of foolishly taking off helmets on an alien planet
-added the deleted mutated Fiefield attack scene
-added deleted Shaw vs Engineer fight
-cut chest-burster scene

cut list & alterations: Covenant
-cut aprox. the 1st 22min of Covenant since it’s tropey and better left implied than shown
-film now begins with Tennessee repairing the ship’s golden sail
-cut bombing of engineer civilization, to leave their extinction mysterious/ambiguous, and to make the lone survivor seen in Prometheus more of an anomaly
-cut Walter questioning David 8 about the bombing of the planet
-added split-screen end-credits

Alien: Vast Ships of Fools (a Prometheus & Covenant 2-in-1) (Released)
Time

The purpose of this edit is not only to streamline both runtimes of Prometheus & Alien: Covenant, greatly reducing some of the most heavy-handed moments and overused franchise tropes of each, but also to show a more gradual villainous turn for David 8 as well make the mode of infection in Prometheus more apparently a direct consequence of certain characters’ foolish, against-protocol behaviors rather than a result of sinister black goo meddling.

The exact modes of infection, by the way, are now implied to be both airborne and by the black goo from the urns in Prometheus and later illustrated in the airborne exposure sequence in Covenant. Also the only Engineer to show up throughout this cut is the lone survivor from the climax of Prometheus. So no panspermia scenes in Prometheus and no Engineer bombing scene in Covenant.

A workprint is complete
Runtime is 3hrs
File size is 20gb

(cut list is coming soon)

This is the first edit of three we do from the Hannibal TV series
It comes from the mind of ZAGADKA, and I did already some earlier projects with him like Hannibal - The Morbidity of the Soul and The Lament Box, a remake of my HELLRAISER edit THE BOX
We do this TV show as a TV to Movie, this is the first season cut to a running time of 2 hours and 46 minutes
It is done in a 2.40 ratio with DTS sound converted from 5.1 to 7.1
There is a lot of re-scores/replacements in it from other Hannibal movies, music by Hans Zimmer, Howard Shore, but also tracks of John Carpenter and The Newton Brothers
It will be released by the end of the week on my blog

Can’t wait. You’re one of my favorite fan editors.

Kenobi - A Star Wars Story (by JXEditor)
7/10

A radical contextualization of the Star Wars prequels which focuses solely on Obi-Wan Kenobi’s arcs throughout the prequel films, weaving together a more compelling and tighter story than (imo) George Lucas had, this film isn’t afraid to do things like rename Maul to Darth Grevous in order to make the now composited villains of Maul and Grevous into a slightly more developed villain. It really succeeds in its goals, but perhaps the mode of that success is also what brings it down a few notches. And of course the lower resolution of the file or source quality loses points too.

While I did enjoy this very much and think it’s actually watchable compared to revisiting all three prequels as Disney/Lucas intends. It’s also superior to the anti cheese cuts.

While I allowed it to rewrite my headcannon for the prequels and I’d gladly watch this cut again (as it’s now my preferred prequel edit), I would have found it a stronger piece with three simple adjustments:

-while clever, I would have done w/out the added footage in the very beginning which depicts Ewan McGregor’s Obi-Wan exiled on Tatooine, contemplating his past; it’s too rough around the edges and too visually inconsistent with the overly CGI gloss of the rest of the movie that it should’ve been conveyed within the opening crawl text.

-would have kept Mace Windu’s confrontation w/ Sidious (as is, Palps simply appears transformed before the senate and no one questions the transformation, leaving somewhat of a continuity error), plus the omitted scene builds our villains: Anakin and Palpantine- which are necessary to understanding and enjoying Kenobi’s arc as a whole

-Would have kept Anakin’s brief slaughtering of the Separatists on Mustafar, again, because this better-develops the villain, Anankin, and also concludes/ties up the dangling Separatist plot thread

great job otherwise, very enjoyable re-contextualization

The Hobbit - The 3-in-1 Epic Cut (Released)
Time

Because of my affinity for the most vile creatures of Middle Earth, I’ve created a fan edit of a fan edit, with an hours worth of Orc and Goblin centric scenes reinserted. Using Fiona van Dahl’s The Hobbit The Two-Hour Fan Edit as my base material, I’ve trimmed the first 40 minutes down to 10 minutes.

My edit now begins with Fiona’s spellbinding Misty Mountains sequence and takes off on the journey into the mountains from there (Rivendale only appears briefly in the background, implying the party has just left it). We get to know the characters as they talk and interact with one another and demonstrate their tensions on the long road ahead. While I really appreciate the early handkerchief scene, the discovery of Bilbo’s blade, Sting, and some of the early Rivendale footage, I made the radical decision to cut these out to better capture a consistent tone and color palate.

I’ve omitted the the entire scene with the 3 pony-abducting trolls to also better iron out the beginning of my version’s journey (and because the tone and creature design/cgi work aren’t well handled imo). I’ve reinserted all of the Goblin King events (even the cartoonish gags because I feel that they are actually amusing and flush with the journey’s need for action and levity at this point). The journey’s purpose is mainly implied by Fiona’s brilliant montage and allusions to the dwarves homelessness in organic conversation until the first meeting with Thranduil allows for specific exposition on the journey’s nature and purpose (occurring at approx. 58min. into my edit).

I’ve also greatly abbreviated the infamous barrel scene so that after Bilbo pulls the lever and the barrels take their first plunge into the water, the film next transitions to them stepping foot onto dry land (sparing the audience of all that happens in between). After the barrel scene I use Fiona’ cut until we reach the Battle of Five Armies chapters. I have reinstated most of the extended Battle of Five armies war scenes back into the mix including Legolas, Tauriel, and Kili but without any allusions to their love triangle. There are some allusions to Tauriel and Kili having a past relationship and the reason for Tauriel’s and Legolas’s involvement in the battle against the same orc which which Kili fails to slay.

The fight itself is lightly edited to feel more about survival than sentimentality, and in my version both Kili and Tauriel die heroically fighting said orc. Legolas’ antics are toned down so that his action scenes are more standard war duels and tactics (no rides or melee drive-by’s on winged creatures and more toned down dodging and jumping on the collapsing stone bridge). Legolas confronting Thranduil about leaving the company of elves has been reinstated as it connects to LotR and really works as somber breather from the action at this point in my cut. The film ends with Bilbo and Gandalf parting ways in the green grassy meadows, with the film fading to black shortly after we see Gandalf walking off on his own, delivering some final words.

Overall, I felt that the violent battles and creature moments, which are honestly the best parts of the series for me, were too truncated in other fan edits and, with care and even some judicial trimming, I was able to reinsert those scenes to make my version personally more enjoyable while still keeping the core narrative itself as lean, coherent, and simplified as possible.

This edit is finished and I am quite proud of it. I’ll share it and am open to users reviewing it if there’s interest. I do think that my cut has plenty to offer which other edits do not, but certainly comes from an outsider’s perspective on narrative structural preferences.

HBO's Game of Thrones - Fan Edit Ideas
Time

Enjoyed seasons 1-6 greatly and honestly I still like the overall narrative and all but 3 character arcs for the penultimate and final seasons (Little Finger, Tyrion, and Varys were wasted potential). It all could’ve been better (or just not done at all in the case of the "Behind the Wall episode), but I wouldn’t really be into an edit that changes anything radically.

What I’d want is something that’s lke what I saw but much shorter in length for a casual revisit every couple of yrs down the line. I’m not a fan of the books. I’ve read the first 2 but I don’t like the writing style and instead prefer the show. Ive seen some shorter edit ideas and they talk about cutting the gratuitous sex and brutal violence but I like all that stuff. I just want a leaner revisit.

Ghost in the Shell 2017: Lean & Mean Edition (by FairFriend)

8/10

This fanedit of GitS actually elevates the film to an enjoyably moody action movie with an air of intrigue. The narrative itself is probably a 3/5 now as it takes all the cringey and lowest common denominator-catering out of the equation. The Major is less vulnerable (as she should be) and is no longer trying to find herself or go looking for her past (although a few benign mentions which relate to the antihero, Kuze, cannot be avoided). What’s gone is the films worst ideas and explorations and we are fortunately left with a coherent medley of elements borrowed from the anime films and TV series. Yet, it actually manages to be the sum of its parts this time around.

Nightbreed: Cabal Cut
5/10

I say this as someone who’s now seen all existing cuts (Theatrical, DC, and Cabal) with virtually zero nostalgia for Nightbreed (and I’ve only recently seen each of these):

Really appreciate this effort and and prefer this cut to the DC. However with all its efforts to fix a messy film comes more flaws of its OWN. Added/extended scenes/audio samples are just too rough and in need of HD restoration. also while the narrative is more well rounded, the runtime is a bit daunting for this sort of horror/fantasy subject matter.

A film like this actually works best under 2hrs long (ie Theatrical Cut). A shame there isn’t an edit in process which considers the balance and moderation of both runtime and story.

Nightbreed isn’t Apocalypse Now, extending it and making its narrative more robust kinda prolongs what is mediocre about it and ruins the weird trip it can be in a tighter package rather than enhances it (Redux inversely enhances the experience of Apocalypse Now). I wish for a future edit based on Cabal Cut which enhances narrative minimally while focusing on the additional sfx/creature moments (as well as Decker moments). While character motivations make much more sense in the Cabal Cut they simply aren’t interesting enough themselves to care about. Until then sticking to the theatrical for rewatches. Perhaps the conclusion I’m drawing here is that despite Cabal Cut being a noble effort, Nightbreed feels more appropriately enjoyed as a truncated horror-fantasy sfx mess. The theatrical release is at least coherent enough to skate by as an average creature feature.

The Discotek release of the infamous EBOLA SYNDROME features, for the first time ever, the long-thought lost deleted shots containing the more… extreme moments of the film, removed prior to release. Sadly, they exist only in compilation form as an extra feature. They are, however, provided in high quality anamorphic video. To re-insert the scenes into the main feature, there may or may not be some colour matching involved and there is also the added challenge of dealing with subtitles but if anyone out there is game to try it, I’d be happy to provide a copy of the disc. I can’t imagine why Discotek didn’t do this themselves but that’s the way it goes in the DVD business, sometimes, I guess.

Love that film. It’s so wrong and so funny because of it.

Elysium: PanzerKut (by PanzerKut)
9/10

Being a huge fan of Blompkamp’s District 9 (and his general aesthetics) I saw Elysium opening night in an otherwise empty theater. The film deservedly received middling reviews, but mainly imo for generic scenes that felt forced into what I otherwise appreciated as a fun and hyperviolent live action version of cyberpunk/dystopian anime from the 80s/90s (think Black Magic M-66, Battle Angel Alita, Cyber City Oedo 808, etc). While I walked out of that theater knowing I’d gladly watch the theatrical cut of Elysium again (mainly because of the cool factor), I couldn’t shake off the feeling that most of it’s dragging flaws were things that could’ve been easily fixed with a leaner re-edit. Elysium: Panzerkut to the rescue. What Panzerkut does is cuts off the exposition, the weak but heavy handed political allegorical references (you can now make those connections yourself), the pale political intrigue, the boring childhood flashbacks, and the more obvious allusions to a possible romance. Also gone are the cringey “heroic savior” aspects of the lead character Max and most of the terribly performed scenes by the miscast Jody Foster.

What we are left with is 80 min. of awesomely gory dystopian muscle meat that allows for a complete and extremely satisfying sci-fi/action story to unfold about a man approaching death’s door whose only option to survive is to become a tool for the gain of all have-nots and the barbaric scene-chewing mercenaries hired to stop him.

Panzerkut will be my go-to for subsequent (and guaranteed) rewatches

The Matrix Revolutions Decoded (2016)

just…wow. A 2.5 hours 2-in-1 edit of the Matrix sequels to trump them all. The first Matrix is an untouchable balanced thought provoking piece of cyberpunk but its sequels had too much crammed in (some of it really cool, most of it cringe-worthy). This cuts all the forced/unnecessary exposition, love triangles, recasted-Oracles, raves, melodramas, cringey train station conversations, etc and gives us a proper action packed and thought provoking sequel much closer to the spirit of the original as the existing footage allows. Even the action, which gets a trim here and there, is recut (and sometimes resequenced) in ways that intensifies and revitalizes its stakes. Usually not into alterations of film endings designed to retcon an especially bleak ending but the way that it was done here is phenomenal (and the original bleak ending, mainly the death of Trinity, was so poorly acted/executed that it isn’t missed). Even the creatively reimagined way in which Neo ends up blinded is so much better here than in the theatrical cut. The audio/visual source quality seemed great to me and flush with any alterations made, but I don’t have a technicians eye/ear for judging these things in further detail.

hah!

In all honesty no. I’m sure that the effort is painstaking and worthy of a watch, but I’d sooner watch a cut that’s less than 90min.
