pictures of dual layer set
Time
Some very impressive tv and dvd equipment being used here - which I suppose is good when coming to making a comparison about which set has the advantage over another.

I have to say though there are a fair few people out there with just a basic 28" or 32" widescreen tv with a low-mid range dvd player and no special speaker set-up etc - though maybe it's just me

Having both the anamorphic set and the TR47 (letterbox) sets I have to say from a picture point of view I prefer the anamorphic set as it fits better on a widescreen tv - though this is just my personal preference. Sound wise the TR47 set is a lot better than the anamorphic set - YET that by no means should give people the impression the sound on the anamorphics set is poor, it is not - it's just not quite as good.

As for the dual-layer set - a fair few people on here - whose opinions I respect - would have to be impressed with it before I'd consider buying it. For me, I won't bother with the current dual-layer release. Though I do look forward to seeing the work of Laserman and others doing a similar job when their workings are finished.

Changes in 2004 DVDs
Time
Apologies if this has been posted before, but the dvdrip of ESB is online.

From a post (cool screencaps) on the mf.com:-

http://millenniumfalcon.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?t=1627

"1) the Lightsaber sound effects error in the Wampa cave (saber shutoff sound though saber is still on) is still present.

2) The Emperor Hologram (with substituded Ian McDiarmid, of course) flickers more than the last one did, even to the point of almost blinking out completely in some instances. I don't mind this--they are still recieving a signal on the outer edge of an asteroid field, so it works if you keep that in mind.

3) the Hoth battle effects look better as a result of the cleanup. No opacity issues at all, as far as I can tell.

4) it's still "you were lucky to get out of there." instead of "you're lucky you don't taste very good

5) the "han's vest is off" "no, it's on" error that people talked about during the "I love you--I know" scene has been definitely cleaned up--the transfer shows that, as a matter of fact, it really IS simply a shadow across the top of his shoulders, and not a continuity gaffe. Much more clear.

6) the scream as Luke falls is indeed, gone.

7) The "alert my Star Destroyer.." line is, indeed, still there

8) the print damaged line that flickers across the screen as Artoo falls into the Falcon workpit (a scratch I remember made it into the SE's, even) is gone.

9) every line of Boba Fett's has been re-done by Temuera Morrison.

10) matte/optical work has been cleaned up. No matte boxes around any of the ships anymore.

11) The credits are identical to the Special Edition credits. Meaning: No McDiarmid credit.

12) and yes--if you're looking for it, Vader's saber during the duel WILL look a little pinkish in some shots. But again--checking it against screencaps and the SE VHS--the pinkish hue is still there anyway, so it's simply the transfer revealing flaws that older video releases hid.

And all warnings about harshly judging video quality off a rip that compresses 6 gigs to 1 gig still apply

Other than that, I couldn't spot any alterations or additions, or subtractions of any kind. The transfer is ridiculously good, though, so I'm betting there's going to be a lot of people who THINK they saw something new, but in fact it's stuff that was always there, the clarity and the colors and the contrast make it LOOK new"

spidernap - woh! that is possibly the best style and layout I've seen in ages - I'm a real big fan of minimalist ink saver sets (tight ass on the printer ink! lol) but those the amongst the best I've seen.

Very cool m8 - really like the back covers too (great picture selection) - blends in in very well with the front and due prominenace is paid to Magnolia himself.

Hi and welcome ShuMai - those are some sweet modded covers.

Many thanks for sharing - like the way you went with the poster set for voers and got the TDC logo on them and used Return of The Jedi, not Revenge for Ep6. Replacing 'The Unauthorized Collection' with 'The Original Trilogy' - nice touch.

Just dling your discart now too.

Always good to have another version of a set.

a Star Trek thread...
Time
^ aye, Ron Moore stated many times that thankfully Berman and the other TPTB focused their attentions on VOY and the movies leaving Behr to be in charge of the 'red headed child of Trek' (due to it's treatment by Paramount).

Moore's interviews on Trek are worth a read - there is a good comprehensive one on ign.com and a few links to others at trekbbs.com He's quite honest about his time on Trek - including his short time on VOY. Behr has also done an interview for ign - but alsa they havn't published it yet - would be most intriguing to hear his views...

It certainly make me think that Trek may have been in better hands under the leadership of Behr instead of Berman over the past years.

dani1138 - a shame they never followed up on the Defiant episode. I heard the writers had something in mind - but never got around to it.

klingon_jedi - I remember the first time I saw In The Pale Moonlight - was just blown away by the power of the story and it's deliverence by Brooks. It certainly opened up all sorts of possibilites to what was going to happen in the Dominon War, and to the characters in general.

Commander Courage - Children Of Time - forgot about that gem of an episode, a welcome change to the War arc - more Trek episodes like this powerful story would be most welcome - tho I think TIIC would shy away from this type of premise now.

Sean Wookie - glad you're giving Trek a go, m8. The even numbered rule is a good way to go - tho don't expect too much in Insurrection. Season 3 of DS9 onwards is quite easy to pick up, lots of foreshadwoing , arcs and great episodes all start here, if you enjoy 'em can always give the 1st 2 seasons a go too.

For any fans of Trek I'd recommend trying to get hold of the DS9 Companion book - an ep guide and views of the cast, writers and producers - all brutally honest in thier assessment of what worked and what didn't and how the series evolved. Also of interest is the original ending of the series which was changed due to Berman objecting to it.

I wonder how it would have faired if it was being made today - subjects such as faith, beliefs, religious extremism, terrorism, biochemical weapons, cloning, gene alterations and war etc would surely have been watered down in the current world climate - esp given the way the majority of VOY and ENT episodes have so far been very bland of making a social comment of any sort - let alone entertaining us fans.

On a side note it was good to have seen such strong recurring guest actors such as Andrew Robinson, Casey Biggs, Jeffrey Combs and Marc Alaimo and given strong storylines and dialogue in a series. A definate bonus to the overall feel and tone of the series.

On the front cover perhaps leaving a gap between the picture and the logo would give it more of an 'imposing' (damn my limited vocab) stand-out feel?

It seems strange to not see Maul and Palpatine on the front cover - though I do like the look of having just 4 or 5 characters on the front.

If you need more space on the back cover for more drawings, the texts 'In a stream of seemingly endless never ending...' all the way to the end of 'enahnce the feel of the overall story' could be removed without info on the film being lost.

Perhaps the gold lettering could be changed to silver on the spine so that the drawings fit in better wit the rest fo the cover?

I'd wait for other ppl's opinions and suggestions before thinking of changing anything though.

MagnoliaFan Edits: Ep I "Balance Of The Force", and Ep II "The Clone War" (Released)

^ Palpatine got to Dooku before he left the Jedi / Jedi Council?

I'm not sure on the 'redundancy' of Dooku due to what happens in Ep3 - apart from his death, we don't know the details of the on-screen stuff of what's going on yet.

That's a pretty big jump in conclusions to the main reason of the Emperor smiling at Vader in RoTJ is that it reminds him of getting Dooku to resign from the Jedi (did he?) all those years before.

I agree that the events in EP3 could make it quite difficult for Magnolia to carry on the consistancy of Dooku - though it should be interesting to see how he does it - though it all depends on just how heavily Dooku features in the final cut of Ep3 too...

Hi & welcome to the boards.
