Harmy's RETURN OF THE JEDI Despecialized Edition HD - V3.1
Time

Really looking forward to this, but I'll be patient. It's less than two years before the 30th anniversary of the Jedi's release and I'm sure it'll be ready by then. On the one hand, it'll be nice to finally see an HD non-SE version. On the other hand, I don't like being reminded of how long it's been and how damn quickly the decades have passed. I can still remember the feeling of sitting in the darkened theater for this.

What does the blu-ray set have to offer?

New deleted scenes, probably for all six movies, in HD.

Say what you will, but that has me sold.

In my case, no, thanks. I've never seen an added scene in the original trilogy that did anything but mess up the pacing for me. Guess I'm forever locked in the mindset of the original theatrical runs. In fact, the Blu-ray set has absolutely nothing to offer to me.

RETURN OF THE JEDI 1983 THEATRICAL VERSION RECONSTRUCTION DVD by Harmy (MKV, NTSC DVD5 AND PAL DVD9 AVAILABLE)

Got it, Harmy. Scanned through it and it's looking good. Thanks a lot. Of course, I won't actually watch it in full until May, just to try to recapture the late spring mood of that wonderful premiere. Oh, to be young again.

My apologies to Harmy and others for inadvertently hijacking this thread. I should have talked about this in the theatrical cuts vs. special editions forum. And now, back to your regularly scheduled program.

Harmy, in fixing the lightsabers in this shot, had to brighten it up to the point where the blob is, unfortunately, pretty clearly visible once more.

That's a shame. I would have thought Lucasfilm's digital wizards would have spent a little bit of time on that glaring flaw. I'm pretty sure I noticed it back in '83, but I could be wrong.

When i was at school Jedi was my favourite then Empire.

Yeah, aside from the things I wrote, I also prefer the sunny Tatooine desert to Hoth and all of Act 3 being that action-filled battle on the Endor moon and at the Death Star, where ESB had just a few people with blasters.

He didn't remove said blob, and it's still visible in this version.  Just thought you ought to know before you download it, so you're not surprised.

Really? I've seen the SE once or twice on TV and I could have sworn the blob was removed. One of the few major distractions in the original. Never could watch that scene without my eyes always being drawn to the blob. Sort of like an irresistable black hole.

The Special Edition wasn't needed.

My opinion is this,

The S.E. should stand on it's own as a "could've been" treat for all the fans.

It should never have been something to base a whole new set of changes on.  If Lucas wanted to "fix" the Trilogy, he should have allowed those who worked on them originally to make use of the new technology and find a way to incorporate those creations back in replacing the original elements that might need fixing/updating....this way, it would have enabled a better transition between the look and feel of the Prequel Trilogy and the Original Trilogy.

Doing this would also have allowed all those people whose hard work got butchered the opportunity to keep the respect that was taken from them and their creations and George Lucas could have kept his credibility as the guy who stood up against bastardizing film history.

I agree. It's the same way with Star Trek. All those glorious effects shots that looked great through the 60s and 70s reruns were stripped out and replaced by fakey CGI in the current DVDs. At least Paramount didn't have the gall to muck up the scripts, add new scenes, etc.

May I have a link to the MKV version, please? All I have now is my own DVD x264 rip, but it's very noisy and grainy so I haven't watched it in years. I'll never forget premiere night in 83 when I first saw this and I just can't stand the garbage Lucas added in the SE, although I did like that he removed the distracting black blotch inside the Emperor's hood in one scene. Best movie of 1983 and a treasured memory of my college years. Looking forward to reliving that. Everybody calls me crazy, but I prefer RotJ to ESB. ESB just has nothing as exciting as the speederbike chase and the forest is more beautiful than Cloud City. Thanks.
