NEED FINAL CUT PRO 4 HELP
Time
If you still having problems then you can try this Handy conversion program .My workflow for getting vob files to FCP is like this, I demux the vob to a m2v with accompanying audio file the I use mpeg streamclip to export the m2v file using the Final Cut unscaled option, this way you are not recompressing the footage and degrading the quality further.
Heres a link also to a cut down manual for Final Cut Pro 5, a lot of the stuff is the same FCP Manual hope this helps.

Firewire video capture on a MAC
Time
OK Mebe,

I capture mostly on a dual g5, heres what i suggest, up the ram, osx loves ram and 256 won't cut it for general use unless you like to wait and watch the spinning beach ball , the 1.8 g5 is more than enough for what you want to do, the issue here seems to be the disk space/read and write speed, I capture to a separate internal SATA 300g drive, capturing to the boot disc is a bad idea, its usually fragmented enough to affect performance in a situation like this, Tech tool pro or equivalent can do a good job of optimizing that though if you are limited to one drive.

What firewire device is your friend using? is it a canopus box affair or straight from dv cam? some canon cameras had problems with the firewire connection, heres a article on the affected models http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=61603

As for CPU prioritizing, OSX does that fairly well but you can open Activity Monitor application found in the utilities folder to observe the cpu load and disk activity, you can also kill all processes there that might affect the capture process.

Does your friend have the file vault security option turned on? that will slow disc access, you can find that under apple, system preferences, security

Also which version of imovie are you using?

Thats about all i can think of at the moment, hope that helps

Graphics Editor Tool ????
Time
PS is the one for me, working in the magazine/repro/graphics field I can tell you that the Mac platform is still the dominant platform thats why photoshop is the main man and not paint shop pro.For pure raster image work I use PS cs2, the new smart objects function is lovely, for single page text layout it is illustrator and for mutli page spreads quark or indesign or if feeling a little adventurous macromedia freehand.
preferred file formats EPS, tiff, psd or Distilled PDF(pass4press job options or press quality).

Is this set up any good?

Of course to capture video at 8 or 10 bit uncompressed 601 you'll need at the very least a high-performance Firewire 800 raid (like the Medea G-Raid) to capture. We use Mac's in our studio, but the Decklink works with PC just as well.

...but then I just realized that if you want to come in S-Video it's not gonna work for you....

@ Charlie X I was just about to purchase the decklink extreme, I have a quick raid but couldn't figure out how to connect the LD player up to the BNC connectors on the breakout cable, I have some old BNC to composite adapters I use on a kramer video processor, would these do the trick? everyone I have asked doesn't seem to know!

I have the Canopus ADVC 300 and its a nice tool and really cleans up and stablises the source but its still a 5:1 compression and I want to squeeze every last drop of detail out of these discs.

FOX issuing takedown notices to Sith downloaders

Yes but it does, The internet is global, the laws pertaining to intellectual property are more or less country specific, its still legal for the moment in sweden, thats why the pirate bay is real popular.

And I was referring to drugs such as weed etc, the Netherlands has a totally different policy to the UK et al, I'm not trying to justify infringement all i'm saying is that 'one size' does not fit all.

Not all drugs are illegal, different countries, different laws, get real with what? just because my viewpoint is different, if I could download legal movies I would but the short sighted archaic business practices that currently represent the Hollywood machine somewhat limit this in the UK at least.

The same monopolistic business practices that took the Sony Corporation to court in 1984 and tried to get the VCR banned, where would we be now if that had happened?

I see your point, but here has to be some real forward progress from both sides, endless lawsuits isn't the answer.
