Sources on the Special Edition
Time

Another place to look for articles is Google's News Archive Search.  They've been scanning in old newspapers from all and when over:

http://news.google.com/archivesearch/advanced_search

(change to 100 results & limit the time frame to maybe a year at a time, and plenty of results so you'll figure out terms and such to nail down some of the harder to find articles)

For instance 'Star Wars' from 1997-1998 gives 10,100 results.

add in 'Special Editions' gets you down to 1,570.

weird that adding 'Lowry' to the above gives nothing...

Note: go back to the main advanced archive search when ammending a query, for some reason if you update in the results page it looses the date field.

Note2: also if you stumble upon an article which is behind a paywall, take a sentence or two and search for that.  Often articles were reprinted in another publication which is not behind a paywall.

2011.04.24

Like many others, I enjoyed the Special Editions (SE), though not entirely. There were some additions I thought were nice, but more that I thought were pointless and somewhat juvenile. I was not surprised, as we started seeing a lot of that in Return of the Jedi (ROTJ), what with the belching and Tarzan yells.

When news of The Phantom Menace (TPM) came along, I was somewhat excited (because it was Star Wars, after all!), but keeping it in check. I'm also the type that hates spoilers, and since my subscription to Star Wars Insider (SWI) magazine was turning into spoiler central, I started having to ignore it somewhat. Not fun! (Same thing happened with Jabba the Hutt in the SE with a gatefold cover they did.) But really, the marketing of the movie was so aggressive and pervasive that it eventually became nigh impossible to keep the spoilers at bay. When I got that issue of SWI with Darth Maul on the cover, that was pretty much my 'whatever, I'll just go with it' moment.

That may have been the impetus to start taping everything TPM-related on TV that I could find, often having the VCR (my faithful then-young Sharp) on standby for commercial breaks during shows I didn't even watch just because I knew that channel was playing certain ads! Lots of fluff, but there were some segments I taped that I still enjoy now, such as the Extra! report on bootlegging. Very interesting! There were also rare original trilogy clips shown here and there that I was happy to see as well.

Looking back, I don't know why I continued these taping practices after I'd seen the movie, but I did. I know that part of it was to see how many others felt as I did about it, as I knew there would be backlash segments. I walked out of the theater more confused than anything. I'm not into politics, so a movie being loaded with politics was a big strike against it for me. I admit that I still don't fully understand parts of it, though that's more down to apathy than anything. The pod race and Darth Maul were cool enough, but then there were the...midichlorians? What? And the virgin birth?! Like, gag me with a spoon! Oh, and Yoda looked ridiculous as well. And, of course, there was Jar Jar, whose presense and antics cranked up the silliness introduced in ROTJ to 11. I'm so glad that he didn't become the hip character every kid would start talking like, as Lucas intended. I'm sure many old school Star Wars fans who were now parents threatened to disown their kids if they ever uttered a line spoken by that despicable character. ;)

So, there you have it; a little history on the tape and how it was made. As 'meh' a moment/movie as it turned out to be in the end, that summer really was a special time for the then 21-year-old me, never to be repeated, at least not to the same extent. Thanks to none's excellent assistance, I'm finally able to share it with people that care about such things rather than keeping the tape in an old drawer, unwatched and getting moldy, probably. I was just going to do a straight transfer, but he offered to gussy it up for me. :)

Enjoy!

No that project is called 'Star Wars Galore'  it's a conversion of a 6 hour tape Ripplin recorded from TPM era.  Will start a thread for that.

Sources on the Special Edition

Although the 'release and hype' stuff are not what you are after, most articles are 95% that to get to the one tidbit you are looking for.

For instance, MTV did a special at the time and there's a short segment on the technical merits/changes.  Available on TWC289 as with other Special Edition era tv programs/news reports:

"The People Vs. George Lucas" documentary...
Time

Incidentally, I think now I'm somewhat less perplexed at the box set's inclusion of otherwise baffling full-length "culture documentaries" on fan films and cosplay.  I figure that these are intended as the anti-PvGL,

I'm going to say not quite.  LFL has been working on collecting fans talking about the movies at Comic-Con and Celebrations for several years. (started soon after the launch of PvsG)   When they put out the result of those that will be the response to PvsG.  Figure 3D release or Celebration VI.

The blu-ray 501st doc is more a response to the 'Heart of an Empire' (2007) doc about one of the founders of the 501st community.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0455524/

The 'Star Warriors' doc on the blu-ray i've only heard playing at Celebration Japan. (2008)  There were rumors of it possibly showing up on the History channel like the Star Wars Tech shows, but didn't happen to my knowledge.

opinions on film restoration/preservation and how it applies to Star Wars - what do you think should/should not be allowed?
Time

Anyone else interested in seeing the raw untouched digital scan.  I'd rather have them that way, at this point.  I can't envision an 'original' which could come close to satisfying the public's opinion.  So like the old documentaries, teach the world a lesson by showing warts and all, the effects of time on film.

I want a crappy Star Wars.

I think it has already been stated that the Alternate & deleted scenes would not feature any of the shots taken out from the originals for the Special editions
When did they say that?

Yeah I would assume that most of the 'Alternative' scenes would be coming directly from the 2006s.

Is there an RSS or e-mail feed for a facebook page?  Something that auto forwards or sends new posts to an outside mailbox or account.

If there is could someone point the feed to 'starwarsfacebookarchive@gmail.com'  thanks.

This 'It's Sad' thing works on many level, and could be the direction of vocal disapproval of the way the powers that be handle the SW franchise.  When parts of fandom became hypercritical of the SE and PT, it drifted towards anger and such and those type of phrases are easy to point out and censor.  If everywhere people started posting 'sad', 'disappointed' etc. then explained about the loss of the theater versions of these films, it could be a way to get to the masses.

Maybe 'I'm too depressed to buy the blu's'

What are you reading?
Time

Oh, good, I thought my wife and I were the only Ffordeophiles around.

How did you like it?  I'm about half way through...  Kind of missing Thursday...  though Thursday is a relatively good replacement.  All of the wittyness of the Literary world is sort of wearing thin on me... I've just read about the Professor trying to spontaneously create metaphor for several pages... let's get back to the cliffhanger from First Among Sequels already!

Enjoyed the book.  Getting a kick out of seeing where Fforde goes.  But he is definitely setting a high bar by doing a whole book with a replacement main character, even if they 'are' the main character.  With all the stufff that's taken place in these books, i've extemely happy to go along for the ride.  He's also got the book world digital conversion issue which maybe he's spacing out it's conclusion to see what does happen in this real world.  But if the Sherlock problem is so huge having multiple Thursdays around will probably help in the long run.  Lots of pieces getting moved around. (I really want a Goliath t-shirt...)

'Shades of Grey' again sets up a wonderful universe, looking forward as well.  Have you tried 'The Last Dragonslayer'?  Complete missed this one, sounds in a different vein but will probably read it eventually.

Also if you get the chance definitely see he speak at a book signing or reading.  Lots of fun.  Seen him for every book except this last one and the first, unfortunately the Q&A always has the movie question, but he's got lots of annecdotes.

The Phantom Menace - general discussion thread
Time

twooffour wrote: Padme is supposed to be a proactive, caring person - how come she's probably the most boring and emotionless out of all the main characters?

She's proactive, caring and semi-emotional as a Senator.  She like most of the characters in the PT is emotionally stunted as an individual.  So when she's in the Senate pleading the case about the invasion of Naboo.  Portman acts.  The scene works.  (until you attempt to figure out why no one had a camera and took a picture as proof of the invasion)  Padme for most of these movies is shown dealing with interpersonal relationships which she's not good at.  She's been playing politico all her life all these characters have.  They've been locked in a system and it leads their personal life to faulter.  This is a guess, like the camera thing above, you set up a logic system and something simple breaks the system.  and there's just so much time to spend trying to rationalize it all.

but having EVERY SINGLE MAIN CHARACTER behave in that way?

George is making some kind of statement.  Part anti-organized religionous indoctrination, part anti-life time politicians.  Not saying this is right, correct or truth, or if I agree or not.  Just a guess.

Some of the recent reviews have some interesting statements:

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/marshall-fine/huffpost-review-ithe-peop_b_856765.html

There's also an entire underground phenomenon of people who have taken the various films, downloaded them to their computers, then reedited and otherwise changed them.

http://movies.nytimes.com/2011/05/06/movies/the-people-vs-george-lucas-a-documentary-review.html

There is one notion he doesn’t introduce, perhaps understandably: that the original “Star Wars,” the skeleton key to the geek imagination, was skillfully assembled, viscerally entertaining and (spoiler alert!) not very good.

http://www.movingpicturesnetwork.com/11725/the-people-vs-george-lucas-documentary-2/

Yet there’s more to “People” than just fanboys and girls emoting over the highs and lows of their tangled relationship with Lucas, and to Philippe’s credit, he explores larger ideas. Namely, who owns art? Is the creator given infinite time and resources to change art once it has been released into the wild? Or once it has been set free, does the public that consumes (and sometimes re-imagines) it then have some stake in what it turns into?

So general reviews seem to be missing this last point.  We'll see if further reviews learn from the blogosphere reviews.

When they show the Building Empire logo, there is a voice over.  Can't remember what's being said.  Might not have been your voice thinking back.  My mental 8 ball is 'Hazy'.  But you did get two credits.  Real and SW name, back to back.

What parts of the Silent did you help out with.  They mentioned the dusty version, how it was cropped to a more square size, was reduced to 18 fps, and each planet got a different color scheme.

No problem.  Sounds like the films are going to be a week in some cities, then covering more cities but shorter stints.  From the turn outs here, word needs to get out more...

Review initial thoughts...I mean ramblings.  **SPOILERS**

Well executed and hits the main points lobbed in this debate.  Not sure if some of the harder hitting issues will stick with people as some of them are early in the film.  Jay gets significant screentime as he reads the letter sent from Lucasfilm to this site about the future of the "original" Star Wars.  Adywan kinda gets shafted as he's only shown talking about the death threats.  The doc doesn't explain why his edits are getting this kind of attention. (but they do show the removal clip of the intro to Eisley sequence) Would add a minute or two explaining how it's a community of eyes all doing continuity and other changes under the one man FX team.  Jambe's project titles get mentions and I think that's his voice, but again doesn't get into what his projects are about.  They used TMBTM's Silent SW version primarily to explaining how he modified the originals towards a silent era look, to show off what fan editors do.  and tBSWM got half a second of title time under the FanEdit.org banner.  And a few other fan edits who's titles I didn't catch.  Also some quick shots of the OT.com forums, where Puggo's icon registered but the camera was showing posts page scans and missed who else might have been shown.

Since the doc covers so much territory, there's only so much time you could spend. and many issues I felt could be elaborated on yet still remain interesting, but I guess for theater scheduling the ~90 minute window was set, so the doc is what it is.  In the post Q&A they mentioned that the DVD contents are still being debated, so hopefully they'll either extend the cut or put in expanded segments or larger parts of the interviews.  Lion's Gate is distributing the DVD so that's a good sign. (they're a big name right?)

In the Q&A the crew representative said that the goal of the film was to make a legitimate work which the director would feel comfortable watching with George on the same couch.  For me it ends a little sappy.  Like RotJ Anakin, there's forgiveness by the film, even though they launch serious criticism of his actions.  Which again I feel need a few more minutes to provide a greater level of depth as to why these issues are important.  Maybe there's a way to drop in some savestarwars.com stuff.

People reacted highly to much of the humor stuff.  And some of the people really focused on the South Park Indy rape in the Q&A.  Everyone wants to know what George thinks of that show.  Most of the segments have a person framing the issue in an interesting way.  The Jar-Jar segment comes to mind.  There's also a section on the Holiday Special.  Skot's site gets screen time.  and a chapter about the Special Editions.  and the different types of changes, from minor frame changes to well you know.

I'm kind of surprised a fan didn't emerge who split from SW after the ESB reveal.  The whole the universe is shrinking debate.  Then a segment on the PT and the disappointment and how the universe changed with the introduction of midichloreans and ideas like that.

Bunch of the segments focus on some exhuberant fans.  Which should make the dvd/netflix make this something a wider audience will watch as they'll laugh and point at 'Those' type of fans.  Inevitable, as it's part of the debate.

For whatever reason they didn't use the art they were using awhile back of two fans at George's feet.  They're trying to get it back, but some internal something, so they had a few of these posters which were being given out.

But in many ways the revolutionary aspect of this project is it's construction.  The willing submittal of material woven into a storyline tapestry.  Using very little from the actual SW movies, the Star Wars Uncut clips allowed them to show off not only the movie memories but the devotion and creativity of the fanbase.  And that's what could help this find a wider audience.  and hopefully initiate people to the ideas and conflicts of the actions of George.  There are animations of a very cute George periodically throughout the film which are delightful.  Not sure if they had a change in production but the person's names and identification are in two sets of fonts.  Think one for the HD material and one for the non-HD.

The cast is huge.  Which unfortuantly makes it hard to remember everyone so when you go to talk to that person after the screening you can't remember their name and look like a fool.  Kevin Rubio I think is the only Lucasfilm employee interviewed and he shoots down/poo poos some of the criticism, which is kind of refreshing when watching, but he's not involved in the more serious issues.  Also interesting to see some of the fan edits not part of the OT.com/FE.o forums.  One of the Phantom Editors and the early german SW edit.  RedLetterMedia did a great cameo on the end of RotS controversy.   The fan films arena was taken by the Raiders adaptation.  So as pointed out, there are more SW fan films then almost any other category, they got glossed over.

Well it seems i'm just trying to remember everything then provide a set of opinions which usually makes up a review.
