It’s been a while since I’ve looked at this thread, I was able to watch V1 of the project and wow, It was really good and just such a vast improvement of the theatrical version. I cannot wait to burn this onto my own blu-ray to have it on my shelf. Thanks Hal for all the time you’ve put into creating this for everyone! This episode 9 edit along with your TFA and prequel edits are my definitive versions of those movies.

converting mkv to mp4
Time

Hello, I’ve been trying to convert an mkv that I ripped from my TROS blu-ray for fan-editing, and I can’t edit the video track as currently I’m just using iMovie until I can buy FCPX and they don’t support mkv. I’ve tried numerous times to convert this mkv to mp4 using vlc and I tried on handbrake, but for some reason every time I load it into the editor, the video is just fine but the audio is always messed up. It plays descriptive audio and all of the dubs of the movie at the same time as the normal english track causing the mp4 to be basically worthless for editing purposes. I’ve been trying to do this for a while now and it’s been pretty frustrating, needless to say I am a first time fan editor. Does anybody have any suggestions on how I can properly convert the mkv to mp4 for editing reasons?

Hello, this might be the wrong thread to write this in but I recently got a blu ray burner to rip my rise of skywalker blu ray for editing purposes, and downloading ascendant on my new MacBook to do edits with them on iMovie/final cut pro, and I wanted to ask if anybody here had any advice on converting mkvs to mp4 because for some reason every time I try to do it, as soon as I load the movie into iMovie/final cut pro the audio is normal but there is a descriptive audio track along with the normal movie audio. I’m using vlc to do this, and I just wanted to ask if anyone knew how I could change my approach to this or if there’s another app I could use to convert the files successfully.

Not the right thread, but I’d recommend Handbrake. Do the highest setting, switch to constant frame rate, and choose 23.976 or 24. You can also choose audio formats and such, can’t remember what it defaults to.

Thank you for that response, I will try out handbrake right now, and yeah my bad I just didn’t know what thread to write this in so I kind of just decided to write it in here.

To be honest, there is no point of messing with the first act any more than we have. The scene on pasaana is important for exposition reasons, and introducing lando otherwise he’d just appear out of knowhere later in the movie. Cutting it or shortening it would lose this and would honestly even mess up the pace even more than it already is. Imo the scene works just fine, although yes it is fast that’s just the way the film was paced by the editing/script. I guess I feel like it should just stay as is.

I will still fight for this transition. In my opinion it just flows into the credits SO much better. And I love the end theme starting with the Skywalker theme, then Rey, then the Star Wars theme. Plus how it hits that long note how the Falcon flies away. I think it would be a shame not to have that 🤷‍♂️

Could you pm me the audio track for this please? I’d like to maybe use this.

Were there any explicit references to Rey’s dad being a failed clone of Palpatine? It’s been a while since I’ve watched the original film. But… y’know, just in case they said he was a clone, I hope we don’t overlook it and accidentally leave that stuff in the Rey Nobody cut.

No, that was all in the novelization iirc the movie doesn’t explicitly say he’s a clone.

Both options have their pluses and minuses. There is no “right” answer since the bad story telling/writing/character development/prior canon/philsophy has gone out the door in these movies. So the ideas between both versions … Rey Palps and Rey Nobody versions can never be perfect, let alone making sense either which way. Just try to make what works, even if there are still some holes or concepts that don’t make sense … since well, there was no real direction with these movies from Disney … so we all have to already remove the logic or things that make sense to make these edits.

Oh Jonh, that would be a pretty cool concept if doable.

we get it you hate these movies, but yes that was still ridiculous that they didn’t plan out reys character backstory

Looks wonderful. Have you done anything yet with the wide shot as the ghosts begin to come into view?

I think the final shot needs a color adjustment, the sky of the wide shot is more yellow .

Speaking of the ending, the music transition into “Directed by JJ Abrams” still feels weird. I know it’s been discussed a lot, so sorry if it’s already been decided upon and everything. It’s, like, abrupt and there is no flow or the usual “jolt” feeling you get when the credits roll. It just feels jarring and jump cut in the audio. I’m sure it’s incredibly difficult to get a proper timing with what appears to be two separate audio tracks, but it’s just not feeling right.

Could it just be because of how we’re hearing the music as the Falcon is slowly entering hyperspace? Is the timing just all out of whack for my liking?

+1, I was a strong supporter of letting the music play out a little more because the timing cuts in perfectly.

https://vimeo.com/425012849

I like this. Also, Ben’s ghost looks cool alongside leia and Luke for this mockup!

I wish it could be like this of using actual movement rather than using a still image of Adam Driver’s head on Luke’s farmboy outfit.

I remember seeing that a while ago, this also looks good!

Sorry, but I feel like it’s too late for us to change our minds about the new Tatooine shot. It’s an edit that was first thought of months ago. The hard work of two amazing VFX people on here was used to make the shot, and in my opinion it really improves the movie by removing any doubts about whether Rey is going to stay on Tatooine. It also gives the saga an ending that fits the adventure spirit of the western movies it’s based on, with the heroes riding off into the sunset in the last shot of the movie. I’d hate to see it removed, since it’s one of my favorite changes in this version.

Having to write that up is literally the epitome of the problem btw

Yeah, I really wish this movie was delayed to December 2020 and gave the production another year of development. The movie was clearly rushed from start to finish in 2 years and 3 months was the entire production. (Sep. 2017-dec.2019) it suffers from the production losing a year or two of development as trevorrow’s firing left them with a smaller production schedule, leading to some issues with the story and script that could’ve been fleshed out more had they been given another year in development/production

Jarbear, thanks for the additional mockup. I do still think and feel that what’s there at present is the best option. It seems cleaner, though still not ideal. I don’t think it’d be a problem for anyone who didn’t know there was more scene there originally, which is the audience that matters. I know this one’s not making everybody happy!

And I will try to increase the grey-ness of Exogol a bit more and make sure it doesn’t bleed unhelpfully into anything else. (Perhaps 66% rather than 50%.)

It’s encouraging that the feedback has been relegated to a few things, some of which I have actually changed.

So… do people prefer Palpatine’s message here to what’s in the workprint? We get one additional line, but lose the impact of the concluding static immediately preceding the crowd gasping and clamoring. Personally, I prefer what’s currently in the workprint. https://vimeo.com/449495094

I like the additional line, but the one in the workprint also works really well. If I had to choose one I’d choose the additional line mockup.

Hey Hal still been playing around with adding some other line. I am not sure how great it will work. For kicks and giggles, I tried another attempt with this scene. It is rough for a few reasons, mainly my RIP from the blu ray can’t seem to come out clean and makes the video a bit choppy and kinda … i dunno, weird-ified. So my timing may not be great with what I did since I literally “can’t see” frames. But what do you think?

https://vimeo.com/449780343
PW: fanedit

Here is my rational after watching the video:

  • Prior to this scene, we see Poe make the jump through a wall of ice (may or may not have been light speed, but for the audience, we assume that’s what he does.)

  • So when Rey and Finn are talking, Chewbacca roars. I am implying he said “Poe made the jump through an ice wall!” Remember, he was not too happy/shocked with Poe’s thinking of “How thick do you think that ice is?” since that was pretty dangerous and gutsy.

  • I overlay Poe saying RIGHT at the end of the roar his line about "Well i got us through/safe or whatever he says.

  • Rey looks over towards Poe and we cut to her walking towards Poe and starting the argument about the dampers.

  • Rey says you can’t light speed/ cut that part and have Poe jump up and say “Apparently I can!”

I was implying she was bout tot say “you can’t light speed jump through an ice wall!” … a further extension from Chewy since we see he wasn’t too keen about Poe jumping through the ice and extending that from his roar at the base.

So that’s my logic since we SAW Poe jump through an ice wall and that was understandably dangerous. Also, we see he hit a wall while flying the falcon too. He is rough with the ship … so no wonder we see it in bad shape.

I am hoping this is not making too many assumptions for the audience, but we the audience see that:

1.) Poe is rough on the falcon.

2.) Jumps through and ice wall despite Chewy’s protest.

3.) We have not scene a ship make the jump THROUGH a solid object before.

EDIT: Another logic I just thought of, since she talks about the “downed dampers” that could have been her next argument of “You can’t Lightspeed-” … “without the dampers” could have been another logic to it. Poe cuts her off since he is already annoyed, his mood and demeanor screams of that. Kind of like “Hey, we are here and I’m at least doing something” attitude which he laters takes a swipe at Rey about not “helping” as the best fighter.

This is pretty much what I did with the mockup I posted yesterday in the thread. I like what you’re doing here too, maybe if you overlay rey saying “poe” from the scene so it can sound like she says “poe, the compressor’s down” it might make the cut to the argument over the compressor a little less jarring. Otherwise, great work! I feel like this could be the best mockup of the scene once finished. I’d also mute poe saying “yea well it got us back here” before the cut because it sounds like he’s talking to someone else when rey looks at him before the cut.

I just watched the latest work print, and I have to say the naboo shot at the end looks great! Removing the somehow Palpatine returned line was great and the message scene works really well. During the kylo and rey duel on the Death Star 2, I feel like the use of duel of the fates it too much. The first cue was all that was needed and two uses of it feels like too much, the focus should be on the sounds of the environment clashing with the sounds of the duel. Other than that this is overall looking great!

Not only is it a cheap fan service moment that would feel fan Edit-y, it doesn’t make any narrative sense to have Anakin there. The whole point of the scene is to show Rey adopting the skywalker name after the people who have impacted her the most: Luke and leia, adding Ben makes the most sense because the whole trilogy is about his redemption. Yes, Rey has heard Anakin’s voice during the climax but she does not know what he looks like. If Anakin appeared there it would not make sense for Rey to see him as Anakin pretty much doesn’t mean much to her. In the same sense it would also be weird if in return of the Jedi luke saw Qui-gon for the same reasons. The force ghosts are meant to appear to people who they have left impacts on. Luke would only see Anakin, obi wan and yoda because they left impact on him. Obi wan in clone wars talks to Qui-gon because that’s his former master, and rey would see luke and leia (and should have seen ben) for the same reasons.

Just seeking some clarification after watching the newest workprint (which is exceptional). Is there still a plan for Ben to be incorporated as a force ghost with Luke and Leia at the end of the film? I think this is an absolute must in my opinion. I had already seen a few mockups on youtube with him inserted. Is anyone in particular working on this or willing to take it up? I wish I had the skills to pull off such an endeavor, but no doubt in my mind the talent on here can pull if off for sure! Keep up the great work everyone and thanks for everything Hal.

+1000 extremely vital. While we’re at it, I’d LOVE to see Anakin with those three too. The Skywalker family 😃

I’d like to have Anakin there too but rey has no idea who Anakin is so it wouldn’t make sense to have him there, Ben solo is a must though

It just doesn’t seem to flow right. It wouldn’t be a good match cut beyond fan editing standards, I don’t think. 😦

Not gonna lie that’s how I feel about Finn just coming out of knowhere and saying we just landed to them when he isn’t apart of that conversation. It just didn’t feel natural at all, and felt like fan editing. Maybe adding the leave walking sounds can improve it though, but I just prefer keeping the Finn and rey interaction for the sake of continuity of their friendship. It’s alright though this isn’t my edit so I’m not gonna die on this hill Hal, and I look forward to the final version of the scene.

I kept Finn and Rey’s interaction, while removing lightspeed skipping references. I feel like Chewie’s growl now could mean he is telling Rey about the intel, and then she turns her head and asks Poe about it. I don’t know if her looking in poe’s direction before the cut would need to be extended or not. Thoughts?

That’s similar to one of my older versions. There’s a similar difficulty with her read of “Poe” not quite matching her still jaw. Otherwise it looks great!

Thanks, and when she says “Poe” the intention was to have it be apart of the next scene, as if she’s saying “Poe, what happened?”. That’s why I’m thinking maybe her being still and looking at Poe could be extended by a few frames.
