Fix up original Terminator effects?
Time
OK, just wondering: I'm a huge fan of Terminator 2, but I've always found the original Terminator to be almost unwatchable when it gets to the climax due to the hideous Terminator effects -- it really jolts me out of the movie whenever I see it.

While I really prefer to do without the "enhancements" Lucas added to SW, I would welcome the replacement of a decent-looking Terminator. Just curious what others think about this ... I'm guessing most here would rather not see it messed with.

I find it strange that this is a change I've daydreamed about for a while now, but I've had no desire to see the effects cleaned up in ANY other movies I can think of ... normally I can just accept the effects of a movie as a product of its era. I think one reason Terminator is different for me is that T1 and T2 have such a gap in the quality of their effects, but the same actors, etc ... so the effects differences mar the continuity to some degree. Also, probably a big reason is that I saw T2 first, so going back to T1 was just that much more painful.

when did you see SW first...

My first memory of the Star Wars world is a Hammerhead action figure I received sometime before Kindergarten. The first movie I saw was the Holiday Special when it came out on TV. I was 4 years old at the time, and I found it fascinating. What an introduction, eh? I also recall seeing a "making of Star Wars" feature on TV.

The first real Star Wars movie I saw was the Empire Strikes back, when it came out in the theater a couple years later. It was awesome! Then I saw Jedi in the theaters (third grade by then). And I finally got to see Star Wars a year or so later, I think, when my neighbor got a VCR.

I think that's about the only way this scene makes sense now. To take it one step further ... when the Emperor says "Search your feelings, Lord Vader, and you will know it to be true," maybe he's actually mocking Vader's attempt to hide the truth from him ... so he throws Vader's own words from the future at him, to show that he has already foreseen the whole Luke-Vader encounter.

OK, I know that's a fairly ridiculous stretch, but I thought it was fun to think about!

Star Wars 2004 DVD's
Time
I bought it and was not disappointed, since I knew exactly what to expect (technical screwups and all) from all the coverage here and elsewhere. I think it fits better with the Prequels now, but the changes unfortunately detract from its original greatness.

It's kind of similar to my reaction to the Matrix ... the original Matrix was great all by itself. I was excited about the sequels, but they turned out to be a disaster. So now I just pretend they don't exist, and enjoy the original movie for what it is.

The difference with Star Wars is that I do enjoy the Prequels somewhat (though I have to grit my teeth to get through some parts), so I don't want to pretend that they don't exist. And I really don't mind having a "Prequelized" version of the OT to go with the Prequels. But I still want to be able to enjoy the original trilogy in all its unaltered glory as well.

What I really want is the Alien Quadrilogy treatment -- a nice set with the original and "director's cut" versions of all the films. But I'll take what I can get ... which means LaserDisc-quality bootlegs for now.

Zombies and Jedi

Didn't they sort of have Jedi zombies in the video games? Seriously, I could swear I remember fighting some "undead Sith" or something like that in one of the Jedi Knight first-person shooter games.

That's bugged me too: Like the bloody arm-severings of the Wampa and that guy in the cantina, but then you can chop off someone's head with no blood at all. Maybe hairy arms interfere with the cauterizing effect for some reason.

Why the fans complain...

That's interesting, because I think that's really what he's trying to do with all the extra stuff. And honestly, I have to say that I think he's achieving his goal to some degree. I've just been watching the new DVD set, and while I prefer the original version, I think many of the changes -- Jabba and other animated critters in ANH; Palpatine in ESB; Coruscant, Naboo, and Hayden in ROTJ ... even [cringe] the Kiwi Boba Fett -- really do help tie the two trilogies together. They are moving away from the movies I remember, but I think the combined trilogies feel a bit more like a consistent story now.

The problem is, the original trilogy stood alone for so long, that fans like me grew to love it for what it was ... so even little changes stick out like a sore thumb. In my ideal world, Lucas would have tried to make the Prequels consistent with the pre-existing trilogy, in which case they would have been driven by characters rather than by some grandiose story arc, and traditional special effects (models, puppets, etc.) would have been used whenever it was apparent that CG effects would not be convincing.

Instead, we're getting the "consistency" added into the original trilogy as an afterthought, and the movies we remember are suffering in the process. I can still accept the new versions to some degree, just as I can accept the Prequels and their shortcomings. But the unaltered original trilogy is where my heart lies.
