A not so long time ago… the highest quality version of the original star wars was the gout and the original prints at all were the holy grail, LET ALONE the 70MM blowups… Now we have 35MM prints of all three films and part of the 70MM empire… We’ve come a looooong way baby

Preach brother, preach!

It’s hard to complain about the releases we’re getting when all we had were laserdiscs and recreations using DVDs and blu-rays. I wouldn’t go so far as to say that we’ve got part of 70mm Empire since it’s only a few seconds but it would be amazing if a complete 70mm print of either or all of the trilogy were to pop up.

They just released a vinyl box set and according to Discogs.com Return of the Jedi has Lapti Nek and Ewok Celebration. http://www.amazon.ca/Star-Wars-Ultimate-Soundtrack-Vinyl/dp/B015NOT9AY/ref=sr_1_2_twi_lp__2?ie=UTF8&qid=1454401278&sr=8-2&keywords=john+williams+collection+star+wars

Incorrect. That version of Lapti Nek is from the 12" single, not the film version. As for Ewok Celebration, it is a version made for radio, but has most elements of the film version in it.

Correct. The film version was never released officially, was it?

It is a shame that the movie version of Lapti Nek never made it on to any of the soundtracks, at least as a bonus. GL strikes again. It would have made the commentary problem easier to deal with, but I think we’ll live. 😃

I remember reading that Empire technically has the most alterations made to it–factoring in the less noticeable stuff like recompositing ships–but Jedi is far and away the most negatively impacted by the changes made to it over the years. Poor Lapti Nek…

Precisely what I was talking about. I think Empire had the most mistakes when it was originally shot but for some reason Empire seemed like the least touched of the 3 but they changed Boba Fett’s voice so that can’t be forgiven!

DESPECIALIZED EDITION <em>QUALITY CONTROL</em> THREAD - REPORT ISSUES HERE
Time

A couple of things that didn’t seem quite right to me with Return of The Jedi 2.0 Workprint (not sure if these have been mentioned before):

REPORT-ROTJ-v2.0-WP

@ 00:36:13 - Visible film line scratch on bottom left hand side throughout shot. [Skiff leaving after Jabba’s sail barge explodes.]

@ 01:35:56 - The top, left and right sides of the screen appear to have a blue tint to most of the storm troopers this continues for some time until about 01:38:00 I think.

Okay take this second one with a grain of salt because I’m almost certainly wrong on this one.
@ 01:42:25 - The second shot (close up) of R2D2 shorting out after plugging into the power terminal to open the doors on Endor seems to have different gadgets from the original film (I could be wrong on this one and that could just be great practical effects at the time).

EDIT: Sorry, looks like FrankT caught the first one but I don’t believe anyone mentioned the second one and apparently I wasn’t crazy with the third issue as it’s indeed from the 2011 SE. Thanks for your hard work Harmy!

Team Negative1 - The Empire Strikes Back 1980 - 35mm Theatrical Version (Released)
Time

I’m hoping we’ll see a 5.1 mix for these or at least improved versions of Harmy’s Despecialized 3.0 Editions using some clips from these transfers to clean them up for 1080p. I understand there are missing frames to deal with so it’s not possible to just toss it over top and I’m extremely grateful for your work with this project TN1!

I can’t remember if I asked this before or if I’ve seen you guys respond to this question, but will the stereo mix be restored in any capacity, and if so will it be comparable to the theatrical mix heard on laserdiscs pre-85?

In addition to this, will the MKV have multiple audio tracks to choose from? Thanks guys! I can’t wait to see it!

Too bad they ruined it by zooming in until it fit the 16:9 aspect ratio

It’s just a test. The final version won’t be stretched to 16:9 and they have a lot on their plates so I would look at this as a minor inconvenience. They’re not stupid.

I was referring to that Onion Film Standard review video, what did you think I was talking about??

Team Negative 1

Yes, sorry. Wrong preservation project. My bad!

The audio is temporary. The video will be 1080p. This is just a preview.

There will be a much better version with the other Fuji print. This cleaned version is just a test.

We are not using the color correct tool with this yet, if adjustments are made, they will be done from
another reference.

Team Negative1

Good to know! It looked a little pink at times but that could just be my monitor. Great stuff either way! Really look forward to seeing it!

As for the re-comps, I think those I will leave for v2.5. The plan is also for v2.5 to have a more careful restoration of the 35mm shots, like stabilization and manual cleanup - in 2.0, they’ll probably stay as they are in the WP.

I think the 35mm stuff immediately after the funeral pyre leading into the Ewok celebration (approx. 2:04:34-2:04:54) really ought to be stabilized in the final 2.0. The other instances of gate weave aren’t too distracting, but right there it gets pretty extreme.

Yeah I noticed the wobble in the picture with the fireworks scene and some strange looking blacks with artifacts throughout the darker scenes in the film. Hopefully a hybrid of 35mm film sources could fix this for 2.5. All-in-all though, a great improvement from the 1st version of ROTJ DE. Thanks so much for your hard work Harmy!

THE OT SOUNDTRACKS SALVAGE - <strong>SW</strong>ESB<strong>ROTJ</strong> -&quot;remastered&quot;(so far)+ LP's (Released)
Time

“Indeed I received from him both his transfers of the RSO Recordings LP’S of STAR WARS and THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK</span> <span>wich he originaly made in 24bit / 96khz ( …2x2,5GB… Please don’ t ask for it !).”

Why not just encode those 24-bit/96kHz rips to FLAC? Should be a lot smaller. Or you could just make a torrent. Ripping vinyl to 16-bit 44.1kHz is a bit of a waste.
