"Alert my Star Destroyer to prepare for my arrival." What was the point?
Time

They probably just got Peter Serafinowicz (who also voiced Darth Maul) to do his Vader impression. Whoever did the voice, it definitely sounds off and is the most jarring scene in the entire movie because as others have noted, it's just .... all bad.

I'm waiting for this subplot to be re-instated in ANH and get written up as canon for the EU:

Only Imperial Stormtroopers... etc.
Time

"Not this ship sister".

Anyway, much easier to find the Death Star when it comes to you.

I probably would've put the command centre up on a blockade runner though and evacuated the planet.

I'd never even considered the homing beacon question nor heard it discussed until the meme hit twenty years after the film was made.

One thing that did used to bug me about the falcon is that "several of the escape pods were jettisoned right after lift off" yet why would they be if they weren't expecting to be captured by the Death Star later? It's quite obvious they think they are going to Alderaan, why would you eject the escape pods? If the pods were jettisoned just before capture why did nobody notice? Or is it that the falcon's escape pods had been long ago jettisoned so the fake log entry was a clever, and convenient, diversion. I have to say though, it doesn't bug me that much because it's still plausible that the imperials could be fooled by a ship's log and not checking the physical pods.

How deeply rooted is "suck" in the Prequels?
Time

The prequels do not dramatise a differentiating idea. Whereas, the OT does, in absolute bucket loads.

IV - That's no moon - it's a space station! Loads of cool stuff kids of the '70s had never seen done so well before.

V - They'd be crazy to follow us! Loads of cool stuff the kids of the '70s had never seen done so well before.

VI - Now witness the power of this fully armed and operational battlestation! Loads of cool stuff the kids of the '70s had never seen done so well before.

== PAUSED 16 YEARS ==

I - Yippee! Nothing my kids haven't seen before, and done better.

II - Are you okay?! Nothing my kids haven't seen before, and done better.

III - She died of a broken heart! Nothing my kids haven't seen before, and done better.

Where did the Mon Calamari come from?
Time

The way I see it as an adult, the apparent absence of aliens is obviously down to budgetary and logistical restraints.

As a child I'm not sure it really crossed my mind until ROTJ when I just figured that Mon Mothma had united all these splinter groups of various species rebels (including the humans).

Even in ROTJ, I think the only aliens we see involved in the Endor assault and Death Star attack are chewbacca, nien numb, and a pruneface gets on the shuttle never to appear again. I don't recall any aliens flying the A wings, etc. You only see them in the briefing room and the rest of their involvement is implied? Oh, I suppose the ewoks are aliens, too ...

"Bounty Hunter"?
Time

It's bizarre though, cos in my mind the "wrong" names always come to me first. I see the beige one and think "4LOM" and see the droid and think "Zuckuss" and then I have to make the reversal based on deduction and subsequent corrections in source material.

I'm pretty sure at the time that I considered the names "wrong" but had no other source than Kenner, and the names just stuck in my young mind. Lucas was always screwing with names (THX1138 is not a droid) so I figured it was conceivable that 4LOM was the alien and Zuckuss was the droid. Only the later EU stuff paired these together (and West End RPG IIRC) until then I thought all the bounty hunters worked alone.

Meco Star Wars - 32 years later
Time

ah, Meco. great memories.

I also had a Pickwick published cassette of "The Sounds of Star Wars" by the Sonic All Stars. I used to listen to it loads on my Dad's hi-fi, day in day out, must have driven my parents nuts!

It's awful synth, but great nostalgia value. It was published elsewhere as "The Millennium Orchestra" - like iTunes, just listen to these previews!

http://itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewArtist?id=286031514

But to a Star Wars obsessed 8 yr old seeing this in the bargain bin was awesome!

"explanations" about Vader
Time

Can't say I've ever given any of that any thought, ever.

The OT lightsabre duels seem more about mind-play than showing off acrobatics, and I never thought they seemed particularly "stiff" until it was mentioned and compared to the action orientated PT duels (which are visually more impressive). To me it was more a battle of minds, like gentlemen fencing physically but more importantly verbally.

I've never really understood the relationship between Tarkin and Vader. Why is Tarkin able to command Vader and disrespect the force and belittle as a religion he obviously has no belief in? Compared to the Moff of the second death star in ROTJ who nervously receives Vader.

Discussion: Which Star Wars Kenner mini-rig should be realised in the movies.
Time

Aha, I get closer:

http://www.toplessrobot.com/2009/09/the_11_least_necessary_star_wars_comic_book_storie.php?page=2

How's this for an exciting tease: in 1996, the people at Dark Horse found an early-'80s, never-before-published in America story from Marvel UK! It has Darth Vader in it! Alan Moore wrote it! It's going to be fantastic, right?

In it, you see some unhelmeted Stormtroopers brought down by "Clat the Shamer," a hired killer that causes people to kill themselves by feeling great shame. While this is going on, Darth Vader is playing chess with a squid in a big glass orb named Lady Dhol.

and, having found a bunch of the Marvel comics, I see what you mean about Marvel having disregard for clone status. I guess the clone army is augmented by regular guys, but is that canon?

I also found a classic - the last three Mandalorian warriors and an (obviously now) irrelevant back story.

I'll post the scans soon.

So I found the Imperial Troop Transporter from issue #31 (US) and it's most definitely not the story nor the artwork I remember!

Here's a scan-

http://www.flickr.com/photos/miker71/3938939200/

in the story I remember the Transporter was slightly modified (by artistic license) and IIRC the stormtroopers were sat along a "bench" on the side of the vehicle rather than pods. And they are chatting without their helmets on ... no idea if they were on Tatooine or not.

man, i have to find it now to make sure i didn't imagine it! just to complicate matters the US and UK Marvel issues numbers are totally different, and it's possible the UK version was printed weeks, months, or years after the US. I'm fairly certain there was no UK exclusive strips.

(and sorry to derail the thread a little ...)

That Troop Carrier can be seen in Marvel STAR WARS #31 'RETURN TO TATOOINE', I'm pretty sure.

Indeed, it would seem so. Hope I'm not imagining a stormtrooper taking his helmet off, the complaining about the sand sounds familiar.

"Working at the Darklighter place, Tagge hired Fixer and Camie, his wife, as caretakers of his lands. Luke won't fight for the farm, leaving when an Imperial Troop Carrier, Unit Three, approaches."

nice!

Though not a mini-rig this little number would be right at home within a Star Wars film (the hover vehicles in the Rebel base on Hoth looked rather similar) in fact, I'm surprised something like this wasn't introduced in ANH:SE.

Imp Troop Transport

I got that one Xmas as a kid and loved it, especially the 6 or so sampled quotes from the movies! "There's one set for stun" being my personal favourite. It's because of this vehicle that I built up my imperial stormtrooper army with much saved pocket money.

Also, this vehicle did turn up in the UK Marvel Star Wars comic, it's the strip where you see an imperial stormtrooper with no helmet - which at the time I thought was a big deal considering these guys were supposed to all be clones, even back then. Really significantly great artwork compared to the usual IIRC. It's by the same team (maybe even the same story) where vader is playing chess with some cthulhu looking betentacled thing. I have no idea what issue number or year ... I'll have to do some googling ...

Where did the Mon Calamari come from?
Time

I don't know. In the original script I would guess Sullust is the gathering point before the jump to Endor, but of course the EU goes totally over the top and has this to say:

http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Battle_of_Sullust_%28Galactic_Civil_War%29

"Reports of a Rebel fleet massing near Sullust" were first mentioned by Darth Vader in Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi, and the gathering was featured in X-Wing Alliance. The Expanded Universe never elaborated any further on the said event until Star Wars Battlefront: Renegade Squadron was released in 2007, giving the details of the battle.[4] Jokingly commenting on the battle,[4] game programmer Mark said:

"Don't listen to the old man when he says 'it is of no concern,' dude -- because the Renegade Squadron is plenty cause for concern."
