Superman II and Superman III extended (Released)

Some new news of the new Superman Ultimate set....

http://www.supermancinema.co.uk/daily_planet/news/index.shtml

TUESDAY 31st JANUARY

SUPERMAN THE ULTIMATE COLLECTION

I'm still assimilating the details; it's a lot to take in but yet again, it leaves us with more questions than answers LOL.

Here are the important links:
IGN poorly transcribed interview. Donner confirms a cut of the film closer to his vision and using Lester scenes to bridge the gaps. Unfortunately, according to the interview, the Donner shot 'blank bullets' footage can't be found. Instead, they'll insert the test screening version, which wasn't shot by Donner.

Warner held a press event yesterday, they announced the 14 disc set - Superman: The Ultimate Collection. Read about it here.

This is what I think the 14 discs will feature:

Superman Theatrical cut
Superman Director's Cut
Superman Special Features

Superman II Theatrical cut
Superman II Donner cut
Superman II Special Features

Superman III Theatrical cut
Superman III Extended cut
Superman III Special Features

Superman IV Theatrical cut
Superman IV 134 min cut

Supergirl Theatrical cut
Supergirl International cut
Supergirl Special Features

SATURDAY 28th JANUARY

ILYA SPILLS THE BEANS ON THE SUPERMAN DVDS!!!

Superman Homepage has published a snippet of their Ilya Salkind interview [complete interview will be published later], and what will interest you guys is the details on the forthcoming DVD SEs.

Now that Ilya has spilled the beans, I can speak more liberally about certain things without confidence agreements lassos tightening around my neck. The interview reveals a great deal, some of which you already know, but there’s a lot of new information like Pierre Spengler contributing interviews and a commentary track. Richard Lester might be contributing an interview. I remember someone telling me that he might even do the commentary on Superman 2.

I can reveal that Sarah Douglas has provided commentary for the Superman 2 theatrical cut edition. This was done at Pinewood.

All Superman film interests are now completely owned by Warner Bros. This includes Supergirl. The rights issue delayed releases of Superman 3 and 4 in various international territories including the U.K.

Now Donner’s Superman 2...Obviously we will get something but sources at the studio mentioned awhile back that not everything has been accounted for and there are concerns about the quality. Richard Donner and Tom Mankiewicz are poised to record a commentary track. Once again, Michael Thau is working on the footage with Dick Donner. I trust Michael will do the very best, he's got my support thats for sure! The studio will make an announcement once everything is in place.

---------------------------

I can only say 1 thing... 14.... thats 14 fricken DVDs!

A word to the Myspleeners.

Windows 98...
Only thing I will say... Please join us in the 21st century...
And I am not refering to Windows Me.

Its bad enough 9x has the worst tcp/ip stack (its a hack of NT4 RAS thats been patched a dozen times). And if you're using it and thus stuck w/ fat32, then you shouldn't be dealing with DVD media anyway.

On the flip side, though, DVD-r scene releases are in .iso format, BUT they are then rar'd and broken into usually 50mb files.

"The president wants to know if everything's ok, or should we nuke Russia?"
"Tell him 'yes' on 1 and 'no' on 2."
"Uh, was that 'yes' on 'nuke Russia' or, uh, number 2?"

(Only cool people will get that reference. )

Isnt that quote from the Peter Sellers movie.... dr stranglove? Or am I fumbling in the dark?

Actually its from Buckaroo Banzai

I am still waiting for Buckaroo Banzai vs. The World Crime League

Penny Priddy: Buckaroo, you forgot your thruster.
Buckaroo Banzai: Why don't you hold onto it for a while?
Penny Priddy: Any time.

Idea & Info: a Dune Fan Edit thread...
Time
Hmm maybe it had something to do with Cameron revisiting Titanic, and preparing a new multi disc special uber version of Titanic. Not to dis Cameron as a director, afterall Aliens, T1 and T2 are excellent movies.
But Titanic, all cgi effects aside is an awful movie, and for this movie to get a uber release is just... well... yawn...

Lynch must has geez, if that movie can get attention like that. then shoot, maybe I should revisit Dune and make sure it gets done right. Heck, I have no other obligations right... (Has he done anything since Lost Highway?" and get some of my respect and clout back.

(Just rambling, and of course this is probally so far from the truth, but its a thought.)

But thank the Kwizatz Haderach he is doing this... I was quite disapointed that this release was being postboned... and just finding out that this release was going to happen, I can wait.

Update @ digital bits : [Editor's Note - we've been told by studio sources that this isn't a done deal. It IS why the disc was delayed, but Lynch's involvement is still in discussion and no work has been started yet. So cross your fingers and let's hope it comes to fruition.]

By the way, I was also able to confirm with Universal that a Flash Gordon: Special Edition is currently in production. No specs or release information is available yet, but it's good to know that the 80s sci-fi/camp classic is finally getting the long-awaited attention it deserves on DVD. We'll post more as soon as we hear anything.

Cool Flash Gordon SE.... Flash Awwwwwwww

Well my 2 cent's

I liked Lynch's Dune over the sci-fi channel's. Its always been a personal favorite of mine.
Although I did like Children of Dune. I found Sci-fi's to be a bit droll.
Now the Smithee version, I really liked the intro it has, it does add more background into the universe
of Dune, far more than Princess Urlan's intro. I also like the added scenes in this version.
But I do not like the narration track that is over the entire film. I perfer Lynch's version where the actor's have thier own internal thoughts.

Also I have no problem with the "Weirding Modules", I think it enhances the mystique behind Paul and his abilities with out needing the device.

Also doing a fan edit of this, (while I have thought of doing it myself). May prove difficult, and I don't know how you would intergate TV quality 4:3 (as far as I know the only way the smithee version comes in since it was created for tv), and the HQ theatrical 16:9 version. (see that was already mentioned).

Ok so now Powercolor has a new capture card out... based on the ATI theater 550 chip...
I have had 2 previous AIW's and wasn't terribly impressed by them.
But this new standalone solution looks pretty cool.
Has HW mpeg2 encoding and a HW comb filter...

Thought Zion and others doing capturing would be interested in this.

review @ http://www.ocmodshop.com/default.aspx?a=251

PowerColor Theater 550 Pro Specifications
The ability to watch the best TV quality on your PC
Real-Time Hardware MPEG2 Encoding
Powerful 12 bit video engine
Hardware 3D Comb Filter
Hardware Noise Reduction
External S-Video/Composite input support
TimeShifting and scheduler recording
Listen to Stereo FM Radio
16MB DDR Memory
Low-profile design

PowerColor Theater 550 Pro Details
Unparalleled integration
Video decoder
Worldwide stereo audio support
IF demodulation
DVD quality MPEG-2 encoder
PCI & PCI Express x1bus interfaces

Features never seen before on the PC :

12-bit Video decoder with hardware 3D Comb Filter
Hardware Noise Reduction
Digital 12-bit IF demod
First PCI Express TV chip

Additional features :

FM Radio
Closed captioning and Teletext support
Integrated anti-aliasing filters
Sharper video capture is achieved through an industry leading 2D 5-line comb filter.
Professional quality 3D comb filter which is used to separate the luminance and chrominance components of video. The 3D filter works best on still areas of video because it is able to scan ahead a frame and determine whether the image has changed or not. It then uses this information to properly separate the luminance and chrominance parts of a composite or TV tuner signal to eliminate color bleeding or other artifacting.
The THEATER™550 PRO’s digital audio architecture delivers 100% synchronized audio and video. Audio and video streams are processed in together in the chip and sent out packaged as a MPEG stream to the system for storage or playback. Say goodbye to bad lip synch!
High horsepower chip ensures that frames are never dropped and smooth and fluid video is recorded, providing an ideal PVR experience.
Bright bursts in white or color levels occur due to fluctuating signal strength and cause video to suddenly brighten and then darken. The THEATER™550 PRO prevents this problem from occurring by using a 12-bit analog to digital converter which converts and smoothes out the analog signal, along with Automatic Gain Control (AGC) circuitry.
Most analog video sources, whether from cable TV or antenna are very noisy with snow and other distortions. The THEATER™550 PRO has been designed to tackle this real-world video and has a dedicated engine to intelligently remove noise, yet still achieved sharp edges and fine textures.
The THEATER™550 PRO combines all the features of a TV tuning PVR card into a single chip complete with high-end THEATER™quality

Well every few months I get caught up on current DVDR technology...

And I just found this out about the status of DVD-'DL-R'

Checking out the firmware update to the Plextor PX-716 (new 16x DVD+-R, '6x' DVD+R DL drive)
which currently sells for $85-95 USD...

"Date posted: January 24, 2005
Added support for 2x DVD-R DL (dual layer) media
Add support for 6x writing on DVD+R DL (double layer) media"

And they say firmware upgrade to 6x DVD-R DL in march.

So from what I have found out, the 2rd Generation of DL drives that have 4x +R DL burning, will probally
for the most part be firmware upgradable to -DL. Currently only Plextor has support for this.

Hi Zion and all. I'm a new poster here but have been following the forums for some time now.

I'm wondering how this project will ultimately be distributed? A cursory look at prices today at CompUSA had dual-layer DVDs (all of them DVD+R) showed that they were still pretty expensive. Memorex had 1 disc for 14.95, and Verbatim had a 3-pack for 24.95.

Distribution could get pretty expensive. I'd like to receive the final Zion project, but with costs like these, the costs may be prohibitive.

1) NEVER go to Compusa or major retailers for media, they charge WAY to much... 30-50% more than everyone else
2) Hate to say it, but Memorex is piss media. Order in bulk from online retailers, by manufactures such as, Ritek, Optorite, Piodata, and Taiyo Yuden. (Yes, DL media is going as low as $5 per)

P.S. I am actually waiting for either Pioneer or Lite-On DVD-'DL-R' drives before I do DL... DVD+R compatibility blows.

***The "SPIDER" Trilogy DVD Info and Feedback Thread***
Time
And here is the clue...

This topic was to review Spider's release... and 'IF' it was of some degree
of quality... then maybe, MAYBE this could have worked in Spider's favor,
And people would be willing to throw down $ for it based on those
reviews. But alas, with Spider basically bitching, I know, now I don't
want him to get any of my money... based on his attitude.
Consumerism at its best. Piss off potential customers,
you loose potential revenue.

Ok, but the point is TitleLAB is capable of importing .ssa, .srt and .sub files and exporting to Qt or DVD studio pro and if he hasn't got DVD studio pro then he may use Sizzle which is free to author the dvd.

Also if you go Here you will find swedish subrip for the ANH which you can open in Titlelab and make a custom edit, may save you alot of typing

My bad I didn't realize it had an export feature to DVD studio pro, since its not stated on the page...
Course reading the forums on it, seems that even that has issues.

Hmm Sizzle have to check that out...

Well thats all good... but that program is for creating subtitle tracks for Quicktime movies
not DVDs. I think he wants a program that creates subtitles for dvds.

And I asume, mikemccool you would be using DVD Studio Pro... to build your dvd (pretty much the only DVD creation
software for the mac since iDVD doesn't support subs), this has a built in subtitle editor.

Help me settle an argument: does Luke use the ‘force choke’?
Time
My 2 cents is this... It's a force choke plain and simple...

And it comes down to this... Luke is actually the one that brings balance to the force, not Anakin.
When stated that Anakin is the 'possibly' the one its cause of the powerful potential he has...
But who says the most powerful should be the one.

Also If you have ever read 'Heir to the Empire' which is considered canon material and post ROTJ...
Luke actually learns a great deal about the dark side and its powers, and uses them without penaty to
his soul, thus in his path has attained a balance in the force. Even when Luke brings back the Jedi academy
the new rules are not as rigid as they originally were to be a Jedi, cause NO one can be perfect. And not to get
into a relegious debate but even Jesus wasn't perfect, he had his own flaws.

No one can be 100% good or 100% evil, there is always a shade of grey. Although I do think the original ideals of the
Jedi was to atain that 100% goal, but under Luke's new academy its more to find that balance in your life, and its a
constant battle within oneself ie: conflict, which is what defines whom you are and the choices your make.

So in retospect Luke was indeed taping what Jedi would call the dark side and using a force choke. Also I believe its all the same Force... its just how its used and the state of mind and motive behind the use of said power.

All Stormtroopers with Jango's voice
Time
Course making all the stormtroopers, and Tie-Fighter pilots for that matter clones...
Kinda defeats the purpose of Biggs going of and joining the ACADEMY run by the empire, guess he bailed out at the last moment cause of all the clones...

Or the fact that Luke also wanted to join even though he hated the Empire. (hmm kinda like what a lot of people that join the military today do, they don't do just cause the like the goverment in power.)

Personally I think that is a strong arguement that they ARE NOT all clones. Also why the reason Clonetrooper was dropped for Stormtrooper, cause eventually they weren't all clones.

Course, Boba Fett would probally feel pretty unnerved walking around with all these guys that look and talk like him. Which btw would be a good reason to keep his voice unchanged... his helmet actually changes his voice, so its different... much like Leia's, Boushh disguise.

Star Wars Behind The Magic DVD
Time
I also own this 2 cd set, or at least the one I have is 2 cd's, there is also a 1 cd promo version, and a 1 cd version for EP1 (which I don't have).

the problem I see with converting it, is that everything on this except the video, is actually programmed, its not a matter of tranfering over a bunch of graphics and text to dvd format, it is hardcoded in executables, dat files, and dll's.

You would have to basically screen shot EVERYTHING, and would probally lack some of the motion menus...

I am going to look at the cd's, since I haven't really browsed it since like 97. But there is some cool stuff on it
like the Biggs/Luke Tattoonie conversation, which even the source is of low quality... but interesting non the less.
