I have spent a few years trying to track down the recalled VHS set. I have purchased some tapes. I have not succeeded. I have however found that the Trainspotting number 1 Collector’s Edition VHS was indeed recalled in 1996. Until this point I was slightly sceptical. The recalled set was a ORANGE box containing two VHS cases, one case contained merchandise, while the other contained a Trainspotting VHS. The whole set was not recalled as such, but retailers appear to have been sent a new VHS (with the VHS case) set to replace in the original box set. The new replacement VHS has a sticker on it (on the case), stating “REPLACEMENT VIDEO FOR INSERTION IN THE TRAINSPOTTING BOX SET - NOT FOR RESALE”. It’s not clear what happened to the original tapes, but you would imagine they were sent back to PolyGram.
Thus far I have not identified the recalled VHS tape code, although I know which tapes it isn’t. I think it will be very difficult to track down as even if someone managed to buy one or obtain one at the time, most VHS tapes have since ended up in the skip. I will continue to monitor Ebay, the search continues. VHS prices of late have shot up, so the search may need to be very targeted. If anyone does manage to find it, it would make a great find. Keep an eye out please.
