Aside from the hospital scene, (which was cut after the opening weekend in the U.S, and not in any UK version to my knowledge) I’m not aware of any other variations. Are you able to take screenshots?

Some foreign prints had Jack’s typed pages in different languages as well as the title cards.

Restoring every variation of the “All work and no play…” scene in different languages would be an interesting side project (not to mention the foreign title cards as well). Being a native French speaker, I’m especially curious to see pages that read “Un tiens vaut mieux que deux tu l’auras”.

However, I don’t expect to see these pages in Japanese. It looks like these adaptations (as they are not direct translations) were all done using the latin alphabet with the same typewritter : https://theoverlookhotel.com/post/18776071001/italian-il-mattino-ha-loro-in-bocca-the.

As soon as I am able to grab anything, I will let you know. I bought this LaserDisc off eBay, and it’s shipping directly from Japan, so it will take a while. The LaserDisc player I bought might not work at all (it was surpringly cheap), so I am not holding my breath.

While looking for the Japanese version, I came across this shot of Jack Nicholson in an old tv ad. I know it’s a different take from the final movie, but does the open matte version of your 35mm print has so much headroom?

The early Japanese LD I used to have had mild censorship of Room 237 ghost. There was once a clip on The Overlook Hotel site, but tumblr prudishly removed it.

Yep, Japan being Japan, there will be optical bluring of female genitals during the bathtub scene, plus hardcoded subtitles everywhere. I’m curious to hear how the analog mono mix sounds like.

I’m very excited about this. I know it’s been a long process, and I can’t imagine the amount of work that were put into this already.

Yes, there are. Some early home video versions have them as well. Wish I had an HBO airing from 1981 to check the credits.

I am expecting a 1985 japanese edition of The Shining on LaserDisc that is said to have the blue credits, I might be able to help (if I can get my LaserDisc player to work). Why are you wishing for a HBO airing specifically? Are you suspecting multiple blue credits variations?
