3D STAR WARS for the masses...has ARRIVED!

Disney has the advantage of going back to the animation files even for BATB, since they've been coloring the cels in the computer since the early 90's.

I'm not sure they could convert any of the older films done with traditional ink and paint methods and get the same results.

Sorry to double post, but the world will find out how well Disney is with the conversion of traditionally animated films when they release The Little Mermaid in 3D in 2013... well, I guess a few minutes of the film were animated using their CAPS system, but that's it.

There's also been talk of going back and converting some of the older films like Pinocchio, but I'm guessing TLM is their litmus test for going back and taking a chance with the classics.

Keep in mind that converting CGI films like Toy Story and Shrek are relatively easy, since the studios still have all the information used to render the CGI, so they just re-render the film with a left and right view, so you get true 3D.

Actually the first three Shrek movies were unable to be re-rendered in 3D and had to be post-converted like any 2D live action film.  The result is fairly good and better than most live action films, but it's still got some of the cardboard cutout moments you mention.  Hoodwinked Too! is another CG animated film that is only in 3D through the use of this same type of conversion.

I hope that there are worthwile moments to the Star Wars 3D conversion(s) and from viewing the latest batch of superhero movies in 3D I can definitely say that there's a nice little touch that 3D can add to these high budget popcorn flicks, even with the moments of obvious cutting and pasting to achieve the 3D effect... nothing's been as bad as Clash of the Titans lately.  I must say, however, that I've been much more thoroughly impressed by the native 3D films every time (with Fright Night 3D being my most recent favorite) and I'm sure that's a trend that will continue.

And I haven't noticed it mentioned here, but the 3D Phantom Menace teaser is on YouTube in actual 3D in the side-by-side format (also viewable in anaglyph), but it's in Russian... search accordingly!

PS:  Your girlfriend owns BATB in 3D?  Fine, I'll believe that... at least I'm man enough to admit to owning BATB in 3D. ;)  I even bought it on release day with TLK, no regrets!

THE PIPES ARE BROKEN!

HAHA.... I must respond with "ouch, those things are bad for you"!

I love me some H*R... so much so that I created an account just to comment on this!

As for the 3D, I'm glad to see that it's going to be done... seeing as I've become 3-D-tarded over the last year and a half or so (couldn't pass up a 3DTV deal on Amazon before this past Superbowl) and I have an overwhelming compulsion to see every crappy animated movie that has been released in 3D... even "Shrek the Third".  It's pretty bad. ;)

I also hope that (before the official theatrical releases) someone/some group comes up with a quality "hand-made" 3D conversion of the original trilogy... or at least some of the most awesome scenes from the films.
