Info: 'Dr. No' - Rare Uncut Version 1st Beta/VHS release 1982
Time

I have an old ABC airing of Golden Gun, it’s censored but definitely looks about as open matte as that print. Probably cropped when the frames are hard matted. I can check it later. I also have the laserdisc of Golden Gun but it’s hilariously sped up to fit 2 sides, I think it’s the same as the ABC airing. The Full Screen VHS of Live and Let Die I had was definitely pan and scanned though if I remember oddly enough.

If you watch the old original trailers of the first 3 movies, those movie clips are full frame (sometimes hard matted for special effect shots or for whatever reason)

Yeah I own the old laserdisc release of Dr. No and it’s the standard version. I heard rumors old copies of From Russia With Love had “what a performance” at the end but that was debunked. So I don’t know how possible it is the beta is uncut, but I’m interested to see.

There’s an AMC airing of Goldfinger from the early-mid 2000s floating around the internet that has “James bond will be back in [on her majesty’s secret service]” at the end instead of Thunderball. So if that version of Goldfinger still exists, maybe the uncut Dr. No does

1 = ITV dub

Violence Edits

-Kinney’s death is censored. Violent shots are cut out and replaced with alternate TV footage of Kinney flying backwards with no blood.
-Bobby hitting the cop car’s windshield is slowed down so you don’t see the impact
-Guy with the hat in hideout is only shot once instead of twice.
-Murphy’s death is shortened and censored significantly. Audio track 1 and 2 have music (the dream) under the scene. Track 3 does not. Murphy’s hand being blown off is not shown, replaced with Alternate TV footage of his facial reaction. When the goons start shooting (“hey pretty boy over here!”), alternate TV and outtake footage is used to mask Murphy’s blown off hand/stump. Many shots of him being shot as well as Joe saying “does it hurt” are cut entirely. When Clarence shoots Murphy in the head, alternate TV footage of Clarence shooting is used to mask the back of Murphy’s head exploding.
-Shots of Murphy dead on the ground are zoomed so you don’t see the bullet hole.
-Several shots in the hospital are cut or replaced with TV footage. These are so you can’t see his bloody torso and back of his head.
-RoboCop’s HUD doesn’t target the rapist’s crotch, and his bloody junk is not shown/shot is cut off early.
-When Emil’s motorcycle hits the car, an alternate extended TV shot of him flying off the bike is inserted.
-Leon kicking Robocop in the crotch is zoomed so can’t see the impact.
-When Clarence shoots Bob, all of the shots are censored. The first shot is shortened. All the rest use alternate TV footage.
-When Bob is crawling across the floor, the shot is panned so you don’t see the blood all over the floor.
-In the factory, several shots of criminals being shot are removed, shortened, or replaced with alternate footage.
-Clarence doesn’t spit blood at Robocop anymore, he just spits. Alternate tv footage was used to mask it.
-Clarence also doesn’t spit blood on the police report either. The blood is Matted out.
-When Joe is shot, the first shot is shortened so you don’t see the impact, alternate footage is used in place of the other 2 shots of him being shot.
-Emil crashing into the toxic waste and coming out deformed is significantly shortened. Cuts off as he gets up.
-Alternate take of “don’t touch me man” from the TV version used so you don’t see melted Emil’s face.
-When Emil moves in front of the car, the shot of his front/face is cut.
-In one of the most infamous TV edits, Clarence doesn’t run down Emil anymore, with alternate TV footage he swerves around Emil.
-Lewis is shot less times by Clarence.
-Clarence doesn’t whack Robocop with the pole 3 times anymore, he just runs up and stabs him.
-Clarence’s death sequence is censored. Alternate TV footage of a wide angle of the stabbing is used. When Robocop pulls the data spike out of Clarence’s neck, blood no longer falls on Robocop and the sound effect is deleted. Alternate Tv footage of Clarence not bleeding out of his neck as he falls down is used for his death.
-All 3 shots of Jones getting shot now have no blood. 2 are taken from the TV version. One has the bullet holes manually matted out.

Sexual/Drug/other various edits
-The whole movie is panned and scanned to 4:3. This means some optical shots are either crunched, or sourced from the full Screen Laserdisc upscaled (I.e when Robo’s HUD is framed for Widescreen using the whole frame)
-All nudity is obscured/cut. The frame is zoomed and panned to obscure Naked men in the police station. In one instance an optical bra is matted over a topless woman changing near the beginning, like in the TV edit. When the rapist is shot in the crotch, it cuts away so you don’t see it. In the club scene, an alternate TV angle is used so you don’t see a topless woman dancing.
-Every instance of snorting coke is cut, obscured, or flat out muted if there was no way to cover it.
-Sound of Joe pissing is taken out (“mind if I zip this up” scene). Footage of him pissing is cut and replaced with reaction shots of his face.
-Alternate angle of the robber firing his machine gun at RoboCop from the TV version is used to mask him clearly mouthing “fuck me, fuck me, etc”
-Alternate footage of people’s reactions in the executive bathroom cover Dick Jones’ feet in the stall. This also includes an alternate angle of Jones walking out of the stall.
-The beginning of the scene in Bob’s house with the models is significantly shortened. There’s no Coke snorting or fooling around. There’s an alternate shot of the woman wearing gold saying “Bob?” then the door bell rings.

Alternate TV footage that went unused and why:
-A completely different take of the “we should strike” scene. The audio of “right?” comes from it, but visually the alternate shot has the topless woman’s chest covered. It was unused because of the low video quality, out of sync dialogue, and the fact that a version with the matted optical bra is used more frequently now, and is in better quality.
-A wider shot of “lets face it he lost his teeth” and “I gotta go, I got a meeting” from the ABC broadcast. Higher quality close up shots are in THIS Tv’s broadcast.
-A shot of Bob’s front door, used to cover him snorting coke off of the girl’s chest. Footage from the ABC version of the other girl is more rare and interesting than a static shot of the door (in my opinion)
-A wide shot of Bob getting shot in the leg, the second shot. The quality was very poor, and was so short, that I was able to re-create it with an existing shot in the movie.
-Censored version of Clarence running down Emil from the ITV broadcast. Basically just a reaction shot of Clarence in the car as he knocks into Emil. The shot of him driving around is much more infamous and popular (in my opinion)
-Clarence’s death from the ITV version, he runs around in a circle holding his neck and then theres a shot of Robo trying to push the girders of of him. The ABC version I used is rarer.
-Clarence getting shot the second time. The quality of this clip was such bad quality and out of sync with the audio (just another angle of the first censored shot basically). So I decided to matte out the bullet holes myself.

I also would love to get the link. I have the LD myself, and got it ripped, but each side one file, and having one file version would be nice.
Which audio track did you rip? The digital track is said to be really powerful on that disc.

I will share it with you as well, and yes I cut all 3 sides together so it just flows like the movie should. Also stretched it to 16:9. I did rip the digital track.

IIRC, somewhere was said that they made an error on the first squeeze LD release: they forgot to grade the colors. I think somewhere was stated that James Cameron was not amused.

Its not the intended way to watch T2 sure, and I don’t have a problem with the original movie (one of my favorites ever), but in my opinion it’s nice to see a more varried color pallete throughout

YES!! For all things holy, I MUST have this. FINALLY a version of T2 without the pushed blue color timing (nothing against everyone who likes it. I understand it works for the movie, but T1 didn’t have a blue push, so I feel T2 shouldn’t either). It actually looks more like the trailer colors, which had a lot more neutral colors with a slight purple push for night scenes.

Yes, there’s still a fair amount of blue in some scenes (opening war scene, phone booth), but for the most part the colors are more natural when they should be.

So I recently got my hands on the “Squeeze LD” laserdisc of Terminator 2. Something I noticed right away was how different the color was. Here are some screenshots. I used an online free collage maker so some of the screenshots are cropped/cut off. I included the unedited VLC snaps as well so you can see. This comparison was done against the THX 1997 DVD:

'Dirty Harry' - with original mono mix (see kchrules' posts) (Released)
Time

Next movie in the Dirty Harry Original Audio collection: Magnum Force

Audio Tracks are as follows:

-1981 Rental Tape. Oldest release with Mono I could get my hands on. Tape was time compressed so I had to slow it down. Strangely the music and sound effects are higher pitched but dialogue is slightly lower pitched. So I didn’t bother with any sort of pitch correcting. If I lowered the pitch, everyone has distractingly low and growly voices. All other tracks have the soundtrack at the correct pitch. Some VHS buzzing/artifacts in the first 5 minutes.
-1989 Japanese Laserdisc Mono. Missing frames consistently so it was synced almost line by line in some cases
-1990 Laserdisc Stereo remix. Contains original sound effects but panned left and right under the Stereo soundtrack.
-Mono Mix down of 1990 LD
-1995 Widescreen laserdisc Stereo. Mixed somewhat differently than 1990 LD. Missing a music cue when Ricca is shot at the beginning.
-1995 LD Mono mixdown
-Blu Ray Surround Audio, for comparison sake.

'Dirty Harry' - with original mono mix (see kchrules' posts) (Released)

So, I’m not going to include the TV versions as alternate tracks. After going through them and even doing some rough test edits of just audio, there’s too much footage missing in all 5 versions. The longer movies (Sudden Impact and Magnum Force in particular are almost and over 2 hours respectively) are cut down to 90-95mins without commercials. Sometime in the near future I may do separate edits of all 5, but for these I’m going to focus on the mono/original tracks.

I finished Dirty Harry and it will have the following audio tracks:
-1983 Laserdisc Mono
-1979 WCI Rental Tape Mono
-1990 Stereo Laserdisc
-Mono Mixdown of 1990 Laserdisc
-2008 5.1 Surround mix from the Blu Ray (because it’s the most recent sound mix and for comparison purposes)

All of these tracks sync up to the Region 1 Blu Ray.

I finished the Dirty Harry ISO. It’s burnable to a 4.7gb DVD (ISO is 4.25 gb)
Here is a custom DVD Cover:

'Dirty Harry' - with original mono mix (see kchrules' posts) (Released)
Time

Ok, now that I have some more free time to work on these and a better capture card, here is what audio tracks I’m planning for all 5 movies (5.1 mixes will be included for reference/whatever), I’m gonna make burnable DVD flies with menus and such. Maybe Blu rays if I can get more MEGA space:

Dirty Harry:
-1983 Laserdisc Mono
-1979 Rental Tape Mono
-1990 Laserdisc Stereo
-1990 Laserdisc Mono Mix Down
-Tv Edit
-2008 5.1 Mix

Magnum Force
-1989 Japanese Laserdisc Mono
-1990 Laserdisc Stereo
-1995 Laserdisc Stereo (deletes a sound cue during first shooting)
-Mono Mix downs of ‘90 and ‘95 Stereo
-1987 Rental Tape mono
-TV edit
-2008 5.1 Mix

The Enforcer
-1989 Japanese Laserdisc Mono
-1995 Laserdisc Stereo
-‘95 Mono Mix down
-1987 Rental Tape Mono
-TV edit dubs
-2008 5.1 Mix

Sudden Impact
-Mono Laserdisc
-1995 Laserdisc Stereo Mix
-‘95 Mono Mix down
-1984 Rental Tape Mono Audio
-TV edit dubs
-2008 5.1 Mix

The Dead Pool
-1989 Japanese VHS
-1995 Laserdisc Stereo
-‘95 Mono mix down for the hell of it
-TV edit dubs
-2008 5.1 Mix

A note on the TV edits, I own all 5 of these movies’ TV edits. I actually have what may be the network premiere of the Dead Pool (recording is from 1993 so it’s damn close if not). I just finished my HD fan restoration of RoboCop so I have much more time to devote to these. Unlike RoboCop I’m not gonna be dealing with alternate footage (yet, maybe in the future), just audio. Dirty Harry and Magnum Force don’t have any funny dubs, but Enforcer, Sudden Impact, and Dead Pool do. These tracks will sync to the Blu Ray as well.

I was also able to fix up the audio from the Magnum Force Rental Tape. At the correct speed and pitch, it syncs up almost perfectly without any touching up, except for one obvious jump cut about an hour in during the Guzman scene as he’s walking back from the balcony. But once that was lined up it was easy. If I can find a better quality tape, it might be the definitive Mono version, since the JP laserdisc while closest to the original version, is missing some frames. There’s actually an old WCI “book” Rental Tape of Magnum Force much like the original 1979 Dirty Harry Tape, but it’s so rare that I don’t know if I’ll ever get my hands on it. I actually own the CED of Magnum Force (which is probably similar to the VHS), but I don’t have a CED player.

And in addition to the DVD folders, I will make all of these audio files available to you guys.

So, I got ahold of the Dirty Harry Laserdisc Collection. All the movies are in letterboxed Widescreen (except for Dead Pool which is fullscreen, open matte). All the discs are in good condition and have the 2.0 mix from the VHS tapes (original mono effects panned and stereo soundtrack) so those will be higher quality than my VHS tapes. I’m eventually gonna have (for the first 4) Mono Laserdisc Audio, Stereo Laserdisc Audio, and Rental Tape Audio (I’ll see what I can do with Magnum Force). The Dead Pool will have Laserdisc and VHS Audio, plus a mono mix down for consistency.

RoboCop: TV Edit HD Restoration (Released)
Time

I have been working on this for the past year, and have finally completed it. I’m going to be releasing it soon. I posted a lot of updates over on Fanedit, and am in the process of submitting it.

I’ve compiled several sources to put this edit together including:

-RoboCop 4K restored Blu Ray from 2014 (main source)
-The original ABC network broadcast of RoboCop - recorded c. 1991 (not the premiere) - VHS
-WGN America airing of RoboCop from 2010 - VHS
-Comet TV 2017 airing of RoboCop -DVR to DVD
-THIStv 2018 airing of RoboCop - DVR/hdmi rip
-Unreleased Blu Ray of RoboCop Theatrical cut
-RoboCop Full Screen Laserdisc
-RoboCop alternate footage compilation from YouTube (for 2 shots I couldn’t find in any TV version I had)

There are 2 main TV versions of RoboCop:

-ITV version: This is the most well known version that most modern TV edits are based off of. Cut for violence/swearing/sex/drugs. Contains the most alternate footage.

-ABC Edit: Cut for violence/swearing/sex/drugs. Has some alternate footage, but is cut down signifcantly to fit in a 2hr time slot with commercials. But infamously has the alternate take of Clarence Driving around Emil instead of running him down.

The THIStv recording I have had most of the ITV footage, but there was a problem. The 2001 release of RoboCop (that most TV versions use now) had a blue/purplish tone throughout, so the alternate footage was (very poorly) color corrected to match. Some I could easily correct with a filter, others I had to go through frame by frame and re color the background and faces/clothes.

Other alternate footage was taken from a VHS recording of the ABC version, sharpened and up scaled.

Because the alternate footage of toxic Emil is so infamous and unique, I used it. However, most of the edit is based off of the ITV edit, with some edits throughout that are from either version. I wanted to include as much alternate footage as possible.

In terms of Audio, there are 3 tracks to accommodate the different versions:

  1. ITV, main edit. It has the best audio quality.
  2. ABC Edit. Contains the dubs/takes not in the ITV version. Taken from an old VHS, so quality isn’t great on some of the dubs
  3. Current US broadcast. Almost exactly the same as ITV, but there’s no music under Murphy’s death and every instance of “freaking or friggin” is taken out.

The edit is about 3 minutes shorter than the original movie. I also redid the TV bumper before it at the beginning of the edit.

Will be publicly releasing it soon. Also will be posting (updated) clips and screenshots at some point soon.

I also now have the rental tapes of Magnum Force and The Enforcer. Unfortunately I won’t be syncing the Magnum Force tape for 2 reasons:

  1. The movie is sped up. Since Magnum is just over 2 hours, it probably needed to fit under 2 hours on old vhs tapes and CED. As a result the length is way off and the pitch of the entire soundtrack is higher as a result. So slowing it down and correcting the pitch would be a big drop in quality.
  2. The tape is in poor condition. I ripped the first 4 minutes and there are pops, crackles, snow, very poor shape.

The Enforcer however is pretty much mint in comparison. Some glitches on the end credits but that’s it. I can splice laser disc audio in if need be.

I also might make another thread about this entirely, but I have a widescreen laserdisc of Dirty Harry that’s somewhat open matte. The movie as we know it is 2.39:1. But this laserdisc is 2.20:1 and has more information on the sides and some on the bottom of the frame. I had no idea this version existed, and the colors are vastly different from any release prior or subsequent.

Surprised they added new effects thought it would be the same since it was originally Dolby . Makes me wonder if the rest of the Clint Eastwood stereo movies like the gauntlet were tinkered with. Ah well

Oh, I guarantee all those movies Clint Eastwood made had their audio tinkered with at some point. Malpaso made their movies on the cheap back in the day.

Also I have a laserdisc of Dirty Harry with similar faux Stereo to Magnum Force and a VHS of the Enforcer with it as well (that is in pretty much mint condition) so I’m gonna do a mono mix down and rip of those audio tracks soon, will keep you guys updated on that as well. I’m also gonna sync the rental VHS of Dirty Harry as well

There’s also been examples such as Grease and Scarface where although the original mixes were not mono they still were given 5.1 remixes later on that completely revised everything.

though fortunately for at least most of these movies the original mono/dolby mix was provided alongside the 5.1 version on their blu ray releases (Terminator being the only exception), though for Grease the original Dolby mix finally resurfaced in 5.1 form on the recent 40th anniversary release

Ah good, I hope the 40th Anniversary Grease has the original “Hopelessly Devoted” without background vocals. I have the laserdisc and VHS with the original Dolby.

The mix on the new release is from the an original six track mix. None of the changes made for the 1998 mix are present.

That’s amazing. It even has the old paramount music. Definitely gonna have to invest in it

Yep. Well worth the purchase. Some have mixed feelings on the color timing of this release but it frankly doesn’t bother me that much. My only pet peeve though some may call this an advantage is the blurred Coke posters have now been digitally replaced by Pepsi posters. It’s not bad but a bit hastily done in a few spots. If only they could just present the original film sans the blurs but I guess the blurs were permanently cut into the negative.

Yeah, I remember reading about that a while back. I had the 1998 DVD forever and I assumed it was just a rights thing. Looked it up and yeah, it was blurred in theaters because of a Pepsi deal. Now I have the 1981 laserdisc as well and it even has the Coke logo blurred. The “rockin’ rydell” blu-ray replaced it with the design on the blue wallpaper of the burger place. It looks pretty bad now I think, I’d prefer the blurred sign. I’ll bet the new Pepsi ad/logo is much better than the rockin rydell background.

In terms of some sound mixes that bother me, I watched the blu Ray of The Naked Gun recently and I was pleased they kept all the 80s sound effects/gunshots etc but the background music in the 5.1 is mixed WAY too loud. Like distractingly loud. I had to turn up the volume to hear dialogue and turn it way down once action or a big music cue happened. I have the laserdisc of Naked Gun as well so I can rip that at some point soon.

Also I saw Psycho was mentioned on this thread. I have the laserdisc of that as well so I can probably get the sound from that one as well.
