Idea: Star Wars VCD
Time
I've also got an old DVD player that plays VCDs, but not burned ones. Nor will it play DVDr or CD-R music. TR47 is right though, I replaced that with a new phillips last year for about $100 US.

I don't personally have the LOOK! bootlegs, but Rikter started an excellent thread on the bootlegs here:

This should help you tell all the different releases apart.

I'm not sure that VCD would work any better for you, as they'll likely be cd-r's. Every player I've seen that doesn't read DVDr won't read cd-r either, but yours may be the exception. If you look around on ebay you may be able to find the original LOOK! bootlegs. They're not as high quality as the Anamorphic or TR47, but they're real pressed DVDs and they play in normal DVD players.

Just some food for thought.

A Picture is worth a thousand words...
Time
Somewhere I've got an old VHS of "From Star Wars to Jedi", that old making-of video that came out a while back. I remember a section where they talk about how in Jedi, they constructed a whole set for Jabba's barge, yet we hardly saw it at all. I seem to recall George saying that he wanted it to look as real as possible, but focus on the story instead of panning around the set showing it off.

When I look at the PTs, it seems like most of it is just a showcase for visual effects. I think this is what got lost between the OT and the PT, the focus on storytelling.

Oh, and hi... I've been lurking for a while and finally joined. How's it going?
