Amadeus - Theatrical Cut Restoration 1080p (V3 Now Available)
Time

Some time ago, I couldn’t keep up with the download requests, so it went up to MySpleen, but now that seems to be a dead-end since they dropped invites. I’d love to rerelease this as a V3. My goal would be to get ahold of the PCM stereo track from one of the laserdisc releases, along with the original commentary. A potential V3 would include the original LD audio, original commentary, LD AC3, DVD AC3 (if materially different from LD), and ISO music track. I don’t have the time or resources to track the laserdisc down or capture the audio, but if someone were to donate it, then I’d jump in on a V3. I would have to start from scratch.

There’s also got to be a better way to remove the “Director’s Cut” title than the way I did before.

If a DCP version exists of the theatrical cut, that’s a game changer. That needs to be out there somehow.

Because this edit was too good to be true for me I just have to ask this question: Was there anything from TESB that didn’t get fixed?

Leia kissing Luke 😄

Seriously, while a large majority of known issues have been fixed there are a few that are still in the film. Some that you’ll have to live with, and a few that could possibly be fixed…

For the record, I wouldn’t “fix” the kiss, it’s as much a part of the movie as “No, I am your father” is. I don’t think there’s a single big thing or nitpick he has missed. Though he has introduced a couple new small issues (visible layer masks, typos), which I trust will be resolved when the BD-25 version comes out.

I’m also not a fan of the new title crawl, but that’s just me. The font looks a bit too thin, and it doesn’t look right to me without gate weave.

I watched this side-by-side with the 35mm version, and was surprised by how cropped/zoomed the BD version is. For example, the shot of Obi-wan and Yoda “that boy is our last hope”, in the BD/Revisited, Obi-wan is partially cropped out, but is fully in frame in the 35mm.

That was a Revisited change, because if you look at the original shot Obi-Wan is about a foot tall.

Oh, I see. Who’s to say non-corporeal Force apparitions have to be 1:1 scale? 😄

I went into this without much knowledge of the edits, and was excited by what I saw. I watched it to see what I noticed in real time. Harrison no longer mouthing Carrie’s line, that made me smile. I never noticed the Rogue 2/Rogue 3 discrepancy before, but now I always will…

I was very happy to see Luke underneath the AT-AT when it blows up and falls over, that always bugged me.

I look forward to ROTJ Revisited, where every Imperial officer won’t have the same rank insignia. That was super sloppy.

I can’t tell if it’s just my copy, but just after the crawl, there’s the pan down to the Star Destroyer. There are some missing frames, causing the video to skip. It’s noticeable with the planet skipping. There are no missing frames in version 1, so I’m thinking it’s an encoding error.

The Fox logo and title cards suffer from very low bitrate. It’s as low as 2Mbps at some moments, causing some macroblocking artifacts. The picture does get much much better, especially when it gets to Hoth. Is there a reason the video bitrate is much lower than version 1?

Hey Jimbotron,

I noticed that some people on your Amadeus thread were wanting a smaller 720p version of your edit. I know some folks on myspleen tend to want the same sometimes. I was thinking of maybe doing this but only if I got your permission again. I usually use the program Ripbot264 to make high quality re-encodes. Anyway, if it’s okay with you I might upload a 720p version to myspleen.

Thanks,
Stretch

Fine with me. That should smooth out the quality between HD and SD footage. Thanks!

Thanks jimbotron for this fantastic work, letting us enjoy the film that we all loved in the cinema!

I have compiled a set of English subtitles for the theatrical cut that I would like to offer as part of the project. After working on this for many weeks, I believe these are the most complete and accurate subtitles available. I’ve made separate versions for UK and US spelling.

Only one bit of dialogue eludes me and it’s at the start of the movie. As Salieri’s valet reaches the top of the stairs, Salieri cries out “Sí, I killed you, Mozart” followed by two syllables that I can’t make out. I’ve checked the script, the play, and other subtitles (English and Italian) to no avail. Does anyone know what he says there?

I don’t know the best place to host the subtitles, so for now I’ve put them here: http://members.optusnet.com.au/ak47wong/Amadeus.zip

jimbotron, if are willing to accept my humble contribution, perhaps you can add this to your main post? In the words of Salieri, “It would be a tremendous honour for me.”

Also, I’ve compiled an almost-complete list of all the music in the film. I tried adding it to Wikipedia, but it was reverted. Nevertheless, for those interested in such things, you can view it here. Again, I’d love to know a good place to host this information!

I’m a little late to the party. I included a link in the original post.

Any chance of spleen being a dock for this?

I’d love to host it there, but it’s not my decision. The creator of this cut hasn’t been active for quite awhile, and for whatever reason never commented on it as an option. I don’t really want to go against his wishes, not everything here ends up on MySpleen, and usually for a reason.

Please feel free to post on MySpleen.

I watched it and loved it, my only thing is that I can only watch it after winrar'ing it and putting in the password it starts in MPC. but if I exit exit MPC I have to winrar it again.

If that's just how encrypted files work then no problem, I just feel like I'm doing something wrong.

Are you playing it from within the RAR?  Extract it into a different folder first.

Going back to the OP, has anyone else made the "Top Choice" edits for FOD and FAFDM?  I bought the German and US BDs for each and made the appropriate edits:

FOD:

  • Removed embarrassing Tobis distributor title
  • Replaced German titles with English titles - adjusting the faded color of the latter so the reds matched
  • Did not replace ALL titles of the German version, such as the co-stars which listed their full names in the German version (such as Siegfried Rupp instead of S. Rupp)
  • Used US title card for Technicolor/Techniscope.  The German one is too cropped on the left.
  • Ending still includes the Italian "FINE".  The equivalent shot from the US Blu-ray is too ugly to use.
  • Does not include MGM logo - film begins and ends with restoration credits
  • English DTS-HD MA Mono only.  I didn't include the 5.1 because I didn't see the point.

FAFDM:

  • Removed Tobis distributor title
  • Replaced German intro card about bounty killers with English intro card
  • English DTS-HD MA Mono

I have a Mondo BD coming in the mail in the next week or so.  I plan on editing it as well to insert in the English titles and text from the US remaster, and sync it to TheHutt's mono mix.

Done!  PM for details.

While I did buy the Mondo version and got synced it to TheHutt's mono mix, I decided to stick with the (superior) original Italian titles.

After watching that version, I can't watch the US remaster again, even a regraded version.  Sure there's more fine detail, but it's not worth the wacky color.  Way too saturated, skies are teal, and blacks look bad.  Whether it should or should not look like that, the Italian remaster looks natural, and fits in better with the FOD remaster.  FOFDM still looks rough, but it too looks natural.
