Please tell me this means no kids at the end… 😉

Hmmm… well now I’m not sure. You’re right that if I go that route we now have no establishment of those kids whatsoever now.
Perhaps I should try to put together an ending Falcon scene with no dialogue. Don’t know if that could even be done or not.
I think it’ll come down to whether the current plan of heavily reducing Canto Bight works out seamlessly. Right now we have the problem of needing a shot or two of BB8 and making the transition to the hyperspace scene (whether directly or later in the film), without feeling weird that we’re suddenly on a different ship.

If removing the Broom Boi scene, the ending will be a tough one. There have been other discussions and edit/previews trying this and each time they do feel a bit too abrupt.

I was ok with the removal of the salt line, that part didn’t matter to me,

Need the Rose / Stabilzer scene. Clearly his stabilizer was not engaged, and then it transition to the shot all of them have their mono-skis out. Continuity error there my friend. It shows that those rusty buckets have to have those in order to have control.

I didn’t mind the foot thing at all, personally.

Medallion removal, I can take it or leave it.

Hal, I was looking over your cutlist and liked the idea of cutting Luke saying “Nothing will change my mind”. It did sound a bit childish in theaters and you made a good point about connecting the two static shots of R2 so I tried it out and wonder what everyone thinks.

Smooth, very smooth. I like that a lot! Thanks for keeping the last line though!

Maybe Kylo Ren could’ve said they sold her to get off Jakku.

Doesn’t really have the same ring to it. He was trying to make her feel worthless in order to get her to join him (break her down to build himself up), so I feel like “drinking money” fits fine here. It doesn’t have to be 100% truthful.

Plus… What was it Obi-wan said in the original film…? The idea that characters have to give 100% factual information is kind of silly.

Ben Solo being like Ben Kenobi? Ben Solo is living up to his Uncle & Grandpa’s mentor very nicely.

I think it is easy to assume he is not being completely truthful, he had an agenda.

I really like your newest clip Hal. Regardless of the merits of keeping/removing the fathier chase, I really like the new music transition between scenes. Maybe it’s just me, but I feel like it helps give Finn’s last look of contemplation a little more weight. As if it could make the audience doubt even more whether Finn will actually commit to the cause or become like DJ.

Agreed ^^

I love how you replaced the BB-8 sfx and smoothed over the music transition. It really sells what I couldn’t get right when trying to transition between those two clips.

I prefer keeping the dialogue in the ship of “You know about this place?”, “only in stories” and THEN cutting to Canto Bight. Your version feels a little rushed, but overall I think you really sold the transition between the Casino establishing shots and them arriving which is absolutely the critical cut.

Great work Hal.

That was done very well Hal, especially the music and the BB-8 Sfx. Thank you for trimming that.

I do agree with Darthrush that did feel a bit too rushed. By keeping that dialogue that ends at “…in stories” it helps to remove the “rushness” to the scene and helps transition to the rest. It also gives you a little “heads up” to what is going to happen next to the look and feel of the casino.

One thing to keep in mind too, it could all be a misdirect for everyone for Episode 9. The reason for this, if we may recall, Snoke created that “mind” link between Ben and Rey. Granted he explained his “trap” with his reveal he planted that conflict in Ben. Maybe he cooked something up to draw Ben to Ray with the whole parent thing. A way for both of them to draw together for different reasons so Ray would come to Ben … which was the trap.

Granted I am not saying that is exactly the case and has it flaws. But hey, we have to wait and see until Episode 9…

I’ve been re-listening to this last one a lot as well. Another thing that stands out is there needs to be more bass or something to the Your Mother part. When I stepped back and closed my eyes, I did notice the first 2 words were a bit more “empty.” So that, and on top of slowing down mother another slight bit … I think this will nail it!

For the mother part (again listening a lot) I think the “uh” sound needs to be lengthened, as well as the “er” at the end. I think there are sounds that can be used if that would help based on prior quotes if that helps.

That is so close to perfect! I think “mother” could be slowed down a bit more

I agree, it’s essentially 98%-99% perfect, I think if it just slows down ever so slightly it will work. My goodness Ridley, this is AMAZING!

I just personally think the fight between Kylo and Luke shouldn’t be a physical one. The fact that Luke projected himself was a brilliant decision. It’s the ultimate Jedi act, defense, not attack. It allowed him to confront Kylo Ren and save the Resistance, but it also prevented him from having to kill Ben (which he doesn’t want to do) and it prevented Ben from being able to kill Luke and plunge himself further into the dark side.

The fact that the whole First Order saw him take a barrage of firepower and be untouched, toy with their new Supreme Leader and then just disappear, is the stuff of legend.

We saw Luke be a badass, showing us one of the most, if not the most, powerful uses of the Force we’ve ever seen. I totally get the fanboy desires, but I would just think about it some more!

I agree, I am the same way. Granted the “fanboy” in me would love to see a more epic duel, but for the direction the movie was going I do agree the Force Projection was brilliant.

To bring up another topic…I did kind of want to see just a little bit more power displayed from Luke. Just a little more. There are a few options for this right now:

  1. The Redone Luke/Kylo fight from Ivan Ortega

This is the thing that I desperately want to work. He said he will film on a green screen with the costumes and all so I just really hope it works out all right.

  1. Have Luke be the one to fly the Raddus into the Supremacy

This might work better if you start on Crait and end with the throne room like DigiMod’s TLJ edit.

  1. Custom vfx work to have Luke bring down AT-AT’s?

This might be cool. I am literally just spit balling anything by this point to have ideas for Luke to do something else cool. This is honestly just a fanboy desire but I’d love to see something happen and the redone fight with Ivan Ortega looks like the best shot for that right now.

I would love an edit to have Akbar to Kamikaze the First Order. 😉

Yep that is an improvement. I think what sticks out is the moTHER part of it. The reason is the word goes up, which makes a “jump” to the next word/ original face of “once thought…” So if there is a way it sounds more like “YOUR MOther once that…” I think that may help it. So maybe a source that goes down on sounds/quotes with “ther” or “er” maybe is what’s needed?

I hope that make sense?

I updated my post after a couple of minutes with a new version, does this apply to the version that is linked now? Because it goes up on “MO” and down on “ther” (MOther). I feel like he should emphasize that word. But I adjust the intonation digitally so it can be shifted around.

AH, I see! Yep, I downloaded the audio file prior to the updated post. That is a big improvement as well.

I am curious, if possible depending on the scene is to have a bit of a more gap between mother and once? I am not sure how possible that is with the original scene, but I think a bit of space between those two words would help polish it. Again, that depends on if it would be too hard to do with the scene adding a split second or so on the dialogue.

Wow, this thread is moving fast. It’s already getting a little difficult to get a handle on.

I’d expected it to take a very top-down approach, which is what I’m used to at work, but it seems like this thread is naturally leading towards a bottom-up one, where individual issues are being raised and discussed and solutions around them are forming.

That’s not a criticism at all, either is valid and will yield good results, but top-down and bottom-up can’t really both work together, at least not in a loose environment like a forum. So let’s lean into bottom-up for a moment and think about how a bit of structure might help.

If we’re going to be generating issues for discussion, instead of trying to find a coherent shared approach for movies, let’s see how well we can fix those issues by editing individual scenes, as a few people already have to great effect. I’d propose building a library of edited scenes in order that we can settle on which components warrant inclusion at a later date. This way, we focus on practicality without needing to come to a consensus right now. And if we have edited scenes to hand, it takes the pressure off a single set of edits - editors can simply select the elements they prefer the most. And it also takes the main editing pressure off individuals, since snipping and reordering scenes is one of the easier editing tasks. We can also, with permission, take edited scenes from existing fanedits with consent, and avoid repeating work.

Let’s take the Dooku is a fallen Jedi example - some are unhappy with his red lightsaber, so want it rotoscoped. We’ll list that as an issue, then if a capable VFX editor can make that change we have the scene available for production.

Does this resonate? If we focus on individual scenes rather than high-level goals it allows for practicality to be chief while leaving room for personal preferences down the line.

I can see this is already getting out of hand as well, which I know I have contributed to that. So lets start with your example and discuss until a decision that is doable and practical can be achieved such as Dooku.

If we stick to JUST the movie canon, lightsaber colors were not really explained. Jedi had a variety of different colors. But we knew the Sith, or at least the “bad” guys used red. For those who just sit down and watch the movies, would it seem strange that Dooku, who is clearly the “bad” guy does not have a red lightsaber?

Flying Leia - For me, it just felt silly visually. I am NOT in the camp of “Leia was never trained … so she can’t do anything!” arguments. The force is strong in her, so that’s fine and all … when it counts she was able to summon it. I just can’t get over the look of the whole thing, it feels and looks strange.

Hyperspace Kamikazi - Didn’t have a problem with that. The Raddus was a very large ship with strong shields, hull, etc. This was a last resort move that could only work under certain circumstances. Granted, I am not sure why people have such a problem with it. The last thing you would want to do is sacrifice a large strong ship unless you ABSOLUTELY had to. She by-passed all the safety mechanisms that would prevent that. Anyway, for me this was absolutely fine.

Space Chase - It would be hard to alter this … but by removing the time, be it the lines that say hours, etc, that would be MUCH better.

Miscellaneous - Alter the crawl regarding the “being open” since the FO already knew of the base towards the end. I believe there would need to be altering of Poe’s lines to Finn since he says that as well about exposing themselves. Need to re-watch that scene to recall correctly.

For Rey lifting up the rocks, remember, she is Mary Sue. 😉

The flash back idea is an interesting one if it can be done well.
