The Empire Strikes Back IMPERIAL "AUDIOPHILE" EDITION - Restored & Remastered Score - J. Williams & LSO (Released)
Time

I just read some interesting answers to a similar question at the ffshrine:

Set 3 uses quite the same material than the two other sets. Its interest though is to bring alltogether 1) all the original album mixes "remastered" from the old original CD, and 2) All the new remixes, *ie* sessions (Anthology) improved with LP for both missing orchestration (like percussions and flutes that sounded too far, almost unexistant on the sessions) and higher sound range that reach the original album's one. It's not just a simple edit btw, as it seems a lot of people often believe because they're too busy to read or to listen, but a total remixing thanks to tremendous sources synchronization job and pitch correction, all checked on both the session and film mixes (Belbucus version, if that means anything around here).

The Anthology session mixes lack range a bit, and are a bit more shiny sound-wise. So the 3rd set offers even more consistance than the 2 other ones, even though they do it rather well... Wich is pretty cool alternative if you don't always play in a stroke the two CDs of a complete score.

But the original LPs are heavily edited and the 3rd set here gives the complete cues, with two exceptions due to the length of a CD - or the unavailability of a 1980 album version for those edited out parts... ?... Pick one. So, here's the big difference anyway: it's called "The Original Album Reconstructed and Completed" because it uses and contains all the original album material, in a way or another. It doesn't reproduces John Williams's album arrangement.

I've been spending a lot of time reading thread and posts, and man, it is easy to get mixed up in all the information here! Who made what soundtrack restoration... which film was it... which edition was it... which sources... crazy! I saw somewhere, someone had the idea of a preservation wiki. Man, that would be nice. All in formation in one place. I hope that gets off the ground some day. I've got like eight tabs open at the moment, cross referencing different threads...

A few n00b questions, if anyone is kind enough to answer them.

1. How many versions of the ESB IAE have been made by ABC, and is this 2012 one the latest and greatest? I'm not a super educated "audiophile", but I am a super fan of the music. From what I can tell, on a scale of 1 to The Second Coming of Jeebus, this is a 9.9. Audiophiles, would you say that is true?

2. What's the deal with the OT remastered soundtracks by ABC and 7FN? How many editions of that one, and (with respect to other fan restorations) are those the gold standard for Star Wars and ROTJ?

3. Are there IAEs in the works for any other films, PT or OT?

4. Sort of a different topic, but I saw between posts here and there a bit of hate directed towards the TPM UE. Why is this? It's given me a lot of happiness over the years, but like I said before, I'm not the most educated audiophile, so maybe I missed something.

5. What's the ESB DVD that ABC made? The entire score set to, what, the entire film? In 5.1? That would be craziness.

6. And a super n00b question, but can someone explain the difference between cues, film edits, and concert suites? And of those three, what is an RSO generally comprised of?

PMs sent!

robfett, I just can try to answer a few of your questions. As you I was also late to the party and now I'm just passing the torch to the new ones. But:

1. My memory uses to be a complete mess but I think ABC worked on an Imperial Edition (IE), and the he made the IAE, which was revised not long ago with this IAE 2012's update. Not sure if there was a Salvage Edition also previous to everything. Not an audiophile ear neither :-(

2. As far as my memory goes, there were Salvage Editions for ANH and ROTJ, and also a good transfer of ESB LPs that has been recently updated and improved by 7FN. Comparison with other editions... I couldn't say.

3. Not to my knowledge

4/5/6 I don't know what TPM UE means but I'm sure you would find more info regarding that at the booklets (included in the link I just send you). Hope that helps to clarify your questions.

Have a nice day!

Hi guys, so here are the "news" that most of you already know XD:

THE EMPIRE STRIKES STRIKES Imperial "Audiophile" Edition - 2012 Update

ABC had been reviewing his work for the IAE, and improving it! So now he has finished a 2012 version that surpases his previous works. The technical stuff is better explained by him than me nooby XD:

"*** THE EMPIRE STRIKES STRIKES Imperial "Audiophile" Edition - 2012 Update ***

the previous uploaded version of the IAE has not been such an improvement at all next to the older AE ("Audiophile" Edition)... but rather a mess.

The choice for a slightly warmer and less aggressive sound was good but the way it has been done wasn't... Mainly:

1) A badly set DAW (Digital Audio Workstation) can really spoil such a work.
2) The new equalizations lacked of subtlety, mostly weakening the sound and its range.
3) The further balance corrections/compensations were not necessary and often weakened the dynamics too.
4) The few speed & pitch corrections previously done in 16-Bit, and without real time dithering messed up the tone of the tracks.

... plus, a few mistakes, like an unspotted wrong speed (Yoda's Entrance), a wrong one (Mynock Cave, OST part - that had to be left untouched, instead of owing on the SE wich has an altered speed on this part), or ones to be done with more precision (Duel/Clash Of Lighsabers) are other details that diserved a closer attention.

Listing all the improvements and corrections finally brought to this new Set would be too much useless informations. Just rest assured it has been much more correctly processed back from the AE material. Only the very first track have been taken back from the earlier OE3 (Optimum Ed.), the only track to be here slightly clipped on a few fractions of a second but still the best version I ever made of this one.

Many tracks have been now processed in 24-Bit to preserve the quality, many of the new equalisations on the session transfers have been revised more subtlely, the stereo is back to the AE version for the OST and overlayed mixes overall, and revisiting many noticeable cuts from the sources the editing is now as perfect as it can be done from these.

One track is worth mentioning for it's new editing on Set 2: Swamps Of Dagobah (Crash Landing). It's still complete but has now the film timing break at around 2'00", and I suspect the teams who worked on either the Anthology or the SE edited it merged without the silence just because they couldn't know it. I may mistake, but remember I have been sent the complete hand-written cue sheets from J Williams and that cue was missing...! It makes much more sense with that short silence in place.

Otherwise, the Arts remain untouched, tracklists are the same.

Purpose of the different sets:

- SET 1: The Complete Cue Archival Collection, for "completists".
- SET 2: The Original Score, as written for the film, with film timing suites (not film editing).
- SET 3: The Original Album, restored and completed, gathering all the highest range OST/overlayed mixes.

- SET 3 Bonus: The Imperial Edition DVD (not updated), the Original Score reconstructed and completed against the motion picture.

-ABC"

I'm gonna send links for all the three sets to the people interested. Do whatever you want with them, share them, burn it, listen them, ... use them as a present for the next father's day, or simply don't download them if you are good with what you have! Although I'd prefer if you don't publish them openly, cause it's better for everyone if they stand for some months instead of days XD

Hey guys! The problem can be easily solved reparing the compressed file with Winrar! You just download it, open it with Winrar repair the file, then a new .rar is created and you can extract the track, corrected without any problem. So no re-up is required!

Jacksbrain,

Thanks for the links you provided, I appreciate it. However, there seems to be a problem with set-1 cd-1 track 12 (Yoda appears). The file seems to be corrupt and I've tried downloading it four times, to make sure it wasn't corrupted during the download process. Is anyone else having this issue?

Is it possible to obtain a different link for set-1? If not, can this specific file somehow be obtained? Perhaps through a newsgroup or some other method? Thanks for any possible help with this!!

Sorry but I was also late to the party and that's the only link I got. So I don't have that track either :-(

could any kind soul help us please?

From what I understood reading the forum. The 3 sets I was asking for (THANKS NACHOS117!!!) are 3 different ways of grouping music from TESB, as ABC posted:

SET 1: The Complete Cue List Archive Collection

SET 2 - The Restored Original Score & Suites As Written For The Film

SET 3: The RSO album reconstructed & completed

I wasn't talking about any ANH or ROTJ.

THANKS TO EVERYBODY FOR THIS INCREDIBLE LISTENING EXPERIENCE!
