Have to say it troubles me a bit that people are not going out to see it. I mean there are huge numbers of SF fans around, but people don't seem to be committing to spending money on tickets and popcorn. Maybe we are too much the homebody and it will sell millions of DVDs.

Think it also that when people hear "Joss Whedon" (when anyone actually knows who he is) maybe they think that it is going to be all about Vampires. They also seem to have done a non-blockbuster campaign, which has meant that the film has not been as visible, and they have been relying on word of mouth and getting the fans to put up flyers etc. This is a good alternate strategy, but some more comprehensible, good old-fashioned advertising, to a wider audience might not have gone astray.

Think that it is also that its about audience expectations - people have come to expect a certain range of things to be in SF films - cool SFX, aliens, a profound lack of humour etc. So I think that when people see something that operates outside of that formula they don't know what to do with it. But maybe I am wrong here.

Would like to think that it will gather pace over the next year or so in formats other than cinema release, so that it gathers critical mass for a sequel (I hope).

The comparisons to George Lucas are particularly interesting - we have looped back somewhere near 1977, but almost in reverse...hmmm, will think about what I am trying to say here and maybe post a while later.

Knowing the characters really did make a difference to me - you get a lot of pay offs if you were a fan of the TV series.

Part of the problem with fitting the character development into allocated cinema time was that these characters were quite complex, so it must have made it hard to "version" them for the theatre - plus there were 9 good (sort of) guys on the ship, people they ran into and a villan, that's a lot of people to fit into that much time.

Its really the same problem they had with the TV series (I think), as the network it was on (Fox - and whos' favourite show will they cancel next?) wanted the whole world now, NOW NOW! And there was no time to introduce all the characters and let the world of the series unfold. Joss Whedon had a lot of success doing that kind of thing on his other TV shows, I can't imagine why Fox didn't allow him more freedom or give him credit for his level of expertise.

Anyways, its good to hear opinions of the film from people who were not familiar with Firefly, they matter a lot, perspective is important.

Its the world creation that's really got me hooked - everything is dirty. have been a bit sick of all those super-clean movies with SFX that is cool but meaningless.

Am glad you liked it!

You are kind of right in some of your criticisms, but hey - nothing is perfect.

The dialogue! Have been waiting years for some SF that didn't treat you like a freakin' moron! And was *gasp* FUNNY.

Hey I'd like to third Shimraa's motion but I don't think its allowed.

Go and see it anyway.

You are darn right it is!

In terms of the assumed Firefly/Serenity francise - someone on another board was saying that they would probably wait for the DVD sales figures to decide wether to invest in sequel/s.

Anyways, have not had as much fun with SF in cinema since I was a kid going to see the original Star Wars movies, and don't really care anymore if people are closed minded about it. They are just missing out, and only have themselves to blame for it.

How can you so summarily dismiss something you've not seen?

Quite easily actually, I dod it all the time in reference to different things: the new '04 SW DVDs, smoking, drugs, movies like Cannibal Holocaust, etc..

Hey I think that there is some "winding up" of you guys: That is, deliberate pushing of all your wrong buttons. DO NOT FALL FOR THIS.

Took a couple of my friends along to see it - one of them was my test run, and she LOVED it. This is someone who didn't like the Firefly DVDs much!

Film is a a damn sight better than most of the other dross out there.

I think that they may well get a second film out of this;

See this book on amazon as to reasons why - which is pretty much what was pointed out by someone earlier; films these days make more money on DVD and home entertainment sales than they do in cinema release.

The Big Picture : The New Logic of Money and Power in Hollywood

BTW: Am not trying to push this book! If you scroll down the page there is a review with summary of the books' central argument.

Hey these latest two are great!

I saw a second reference in scrubs the other day - in season 2, will have to go and check it out again to get the exact reference.

This is getting a bit like trainspotting or birdwatching or something else equally weird - once you get looking you find them everywhere!!!!!!!!!!

Its starting to become a bit of a hobby... I can't help it I tell you!

So it's not just big screen buffy/angel?

Its not magic stuff - and the point of that content was all metaphotial/allegorical/genre busting stuff anyway.

It has witty dialogue (gasp!). Its got that wry humour that Buffy and Angel had and good characters. One of the more respected film reviewers (this guy is NO Leonard Maltin) here said that he felt like he was watching Star Wars in 1977. I am biased 'tho, this particular reviewer is my favourite one.

I did say that was all from me, but could not resist chiming in again.

You should go and see Serenity, and support the film, because if you don't then the studios will keep thinking that all Sci-Fi fans want to see are boring, bloated, tedious exercises where the only content is the sfx. AAAAAAARRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!

Get my meaning?

I'm afraid it will suck like all the other 90's-present sci-fi movies.

Am in agreement with you in the tendency of 90's sci-fi to suck, but not ALL of it sucked.

Gattaca was great.
The Minority Report was not too bad either (apart from the cheesy ending).
Starship Troopers was fine satire.

I liked Serenity, it did not suck.

Its not perfect, but hey - neither were the Star Wars films, and that is one of the many reasons I like them so much (at least the first three).

Go and see it - we need a new francise that lets us laugh, and participate. Firefly/Serenity has the added bonus of an open and fun fan-base who are listened to and appreciated by the film-makers. Can anyone think of why this forum even exists?

Anyways that's all from me.

I am a big Friefly fan (flaws and all), and Serenity is great!

Go an see it.

Paul Ens, the Director of Lucas Online at Lucasfilm has posted to his blog about how much he liked the film.

http://blogs.starwars.com/ghent/45

If you're a fan of Star Wars, you really owe it to yourself to check out the Serenity movie. Unless, of course, you don't like adventure, excitement, laughter and fun.

Its got great dialogue, the repartee between charcaters, humour and pathos that has been missing from sci-fi for years. Most of the time it seems that people think that the only thing sci-fi fans like on the big screen are explosions, and weird aliens, and taking things really seriously (laughter is out OK!!).

Serenity is great value!

Have been slack - but found a couple more ...

In Ferris Beuller's Day Off:

When the garage attendents "borrow" the Ferrari and take it for a spin - they jump the car to the strains of the SW opening theme.

Also, in Back to the Future, when Marty is convincing his future dad to ask out his future mum (mom for those of the Webster's spelling) he claims to be "Darth Vader"...

HEY!!!

Was researching this post (god I love the internet) to make sure I got my facts straight:

QED Wikipedia has an entry for just about everything - so click here.

I think my work here is done.

Hey - there is a depth of "Reign of Fire" positive feeling going on here. I promise never to say anything bad about it again.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer is one of my favourite shows BTW - precicely because it does things like refer to Star Wars.

This is a personal fave:

ANDREW: And then what? You think your little witch buddy's gonna stop with us? (Xander and Anya glaring at him) You saw her! She's a truck-driving Magic Mama! And we've got maybe seconds before Darth Rosenberg grinds everybody into Jawa-burgers, and not one of you bunch has the midichlorians to stop her.
XANDER: You've never had any tiny bit of sex, have you?

Will keep looking for some new quotes (that are not from Buffy ... ). Someone said there were some in Futurama - does anyone know what episode?

Hey - the more you look, the more you find.

The other night on Las Vegas (eeeeek! - hey I support the guys who are always trying to rip off the casino, power to them).

One of the conmen who is trying to beat the house (hey, does that sound familiar?) tries to cover his evil plans by pretending to be a geek (and therefore harmless - tell that that big softie Bill Gates). Signifer of geekdom - mention Star Wars.

Also a good reference in a show I like - Scrubs first season episode My Two Dads.

Found another one - but can't say its a favourite due to the crappiness of the film.

Its in "Reign of Fire". I bet Christian Bale and Matthew McConaughey would like to forget about this one...

A couple of the lead characters act out scenes from ESB, to a bunch of kids:

Child: Did you make that up?
Quinn Abercromby: Of course I did.

The "Dr. Gonzo" Trilogy DVD Info and Feedback Thread (Released)
Time
Hey there all,

Got copies of the Dr Gonzo discs a couple of weeks ago, as well as one of the Moth3r disks (which is great for PAL viewers like myself) and had a mini festival with friends at my house - we had a ball!!!! There is nothing like a 16:9 ratio, Han Solo shooting first, Jabba's in-house puppet band and "you rebel scum".

Thanks again to all of you, this is a great community and all of you have been unreasonably good to me.

Keep up the good work.

Lucas has GOT to give in one day ... witholding these films punishing the fans - what is up with that?

and the other one is from buffy, also from the three nerds:
(when Warren is back as a "ghost" and eggs Andrew on to send Jonathan to open a gate or sth, can't remember...)
Andrew: this boy is our only hope
Warren: no, there is another...
Andrew: Really?
Warren: nah, was only finishing the quote...

The writers of Buffy and Angel seem to have a bit of a Star Wars fixation:

In Buffy in series 2, episode 3:

Here Spike is confronting Angel

Spike: You think you can fool me?! You were my sire, man! You were my... Yoda!

In Angel seies 2, episode 3 , Gunn talking to Wesley and Cordelia

Gunn: "You two? I find Deevak I'm gonna need more than C3po and 'stick figure Barbie' backing me up. No offence."
Wesley: "Very little taken."

And this is aside from the constant referencing by Warren, Johnathan and Andrew.

Hadn't seen the South Park reference until it appeared on these messageboards in another thread.

I like this bit:

Stan: Those rams can do to us what they will, Mr. Lucas, but we'll never stop trying to protect films. [Lucas looks at them]
Kyle: It's not too late to do what's right. Give us the print. There's still some good in you, Mr. Lucas. We know there is. [Lucas hangs his head in shame and turns away]
George Lucas: It is... too late for me, boys.

And Store Wars is brilliant!!!

The way Star Wars has become this all pervasive pop-culture thing just rocks.

BTW - here is an interesting article about fan activity and the SW universe ... "Quentin Tarantino's Star Wars?"

Too many to list.

C'mon now

Surely listing them is the point here ...

How about this one from Buffy the Vampire Slayer, season 6, episode 9.

ANDREW: Hello, it's called knocking.

Spike backs Warren up against a pole.

SPIKE: Knock knock, robot boy. (knocks on Warren's head) Need you to look at my chip.
JONATHAN: Is that like, British slang or something? 'Cause we're not-
SPIKE: In my head, the chip in my head.
WARREN: We're kind of in the middle of something.
SPIKE: Well, you can play holodeck another time. Right now, I'm in charge.
WARREN: Yeah, what are you gonna do if we don't especially feel like maybe playing your-

Spike turns around, sees a display of action figures, reaches for one of them.

WARREN: What are, wait, what are you doing?

Spike picks up the Boba Fett action figure, removing it from its display stand.

SPIKE: Examine my chip, or else Mister... (pauses and turns to look at the label on the stand) ... Fett here is the first to die.

Spike holds the action figure in one hand and takes its head in the other hand in preparation to pull the head off. The Warren, Andrew and Johnathan look extremely nervous.

JONATHAN: Hey, all right, let's not, let's not do anything crazy here.
ANDREW: That's a limited edition, 1979 mint condition Boba Fett.

Spike grins, pretends to pull the head off.

WARREN: All right, dude ... chill. You can still make it right. You know you don't wanna do this.
SPIKE: What I want ... is answers, nimrod.
WARREN: Right. But you don't wanna hurt the Fett, 'cause man, you're *not* comin' back from that. You know, you don't just do that and walk away.
SPIKE: That right? Let's find out.

Spike fakes pulling the head off again. Warren yells in alarm.

WARREN: Wah, uh, one second.

Warren pulls the other geeks aside.

ANDREW: Dudes, I think that's Spike.
JONATHAN: Of course it is, and he's evil. Completely capable of removing that head.
WARREN: I'm gonna help him out.
JONATHAN: Are you sure we can trust him? I mean, we all have heads too.
WARREN: See, we help him, and he owes us one. See, we get Spike on our side, we get info on Buffy. And maybe, maybe we can even find a way to keep her out of Phase Two.
ANDREW: Jonathan's right, can we trust him?
WARREN: 'Course not. But alliances aren't about trust. See, he needs us, we need him. (nods) Well, that's how these things work.

In the background we see Spike pacing, playing with the action figure.

WARREN: I think we're ready. Agreed?
JONATHAN: Agreed.

Andrew looks over at Spike. Shot of Spike tossing the action figure in the air and catching it.

ANDREW: (to Warren) Do what you need to do.

Warren turns back to Spike.

WARREN: I think we can work something out. I'll take a look at your chip. It'll be a deal. We scratch your back, you scratch-
SPIKE: I'm not scratching your anything. You do what I tell you, that's the deal. Deal?
WARREN: (sighs) Deal.
SPIKE: Then let's go.

Spike tosses the action figure to Andrew as Spike and Warren move off. Andrew catches it and cradles it anxiously. Jonathan looks on with concern.

ANDREW: Oh! It's okay, it's okay. It'll be fine.
