noted another wdtv feature. movie trailers embedded in the moviesheet. i have not done this because i would have to download 2000+ trailers but it is something that is very tempting. you can have a trailer button in the sheet now but the new osd mod that is coming out will have the trailer embedded in the sheet. simply awesome! no more explaining the plot to your girlfriend because not only is the synopsis in the sheet but the trailer too.

The Movies You Would Like To See Made (Not SW)
Time

i sometimes try to write my own scripts. and i had this idea. sadly all the alien invasion movies have ruined my idea but here it goes anyway.

Before the sun began to shine on earth the planet was in total darkness. a technologically advanced race of humanoid vampires which resembled a cross between gray aliens and demons  ruled. they bread humans as a food source. for century's nothing on earth could touch them. Then suddenly an unknown energy collided with a distant star and the sun was born casting light onto earth and forcing the vampires to flee for their lives into the outer reaches of space. not a single vampire was left on earth. in their rush to leave many humans were left behind. man quickly evolved to light and soon would build the world as we know it. million's of years passed and mankind had forgotten the vampires who seeded them on earth. but the vampires had not forgotten their home. they traveled many universes collecting knowledge and developed a technology that finally allowed them to tolerate the sunlight. now they would return to earth to reclaim what was once theirs. with a plan to once again enslave the human race and destroy the sun to restore earth to it's original state. armed with their superior strength and weapons they began their campaign of death and destruction.

this idea hit me like mike tyson 1 day when i was contemplating the origin of man. the thought of combining aliens and vampires is something i would love to see. i even drew rough sketches of them. with the big black alien eyes and elongated heads. only way more evil and huge then the typical hollywood gray alien. they would tower over humans and have sharp knife like spikes of  unbreakable bone protruding from their forearms. clad in black armor resembling samurai armor. lightning fast and sadistically evil they are just plain not to be fucked with.  does mankind stand a chance?

also the main menu is a video if that matters i rendered the video out of after effects @1280x720 16:9. here is what it looks like with the properties set to 4:3. and the preview window in 16:9. and then the movie in the preview window. the movie clearly has the proper letterbox. its strange that in the preview window i see no black bars for any of the menu's only on my tv have i seen this. not in dvda or vlc or wmp. so i am really curious to see it on another tv. i want to release this thing today so if there is a problem i need to fix it.

ziggy dont take it too personally.  i actually like a lot of 80's bowie. i was just busting your balls a little. and labyrinth  is an all time 80's favorite i own it on bluray. as for homophobic no not at all. but if you have not noticed the word "gay" has been popularized in modern slang to describe something that sucks in general as a descriptive word. example: the south park episode where they had the word "fag" re defined in the dictionary to describe guys who ride around on loud harleys. funny ass episode.  and i am not the slightest bit homophobic or racist but i do find some of the slanderous words used in the past funny as hell. ziggy you seem really cool and i hope i did not offend you. i always think everyone understands "gay" jokes but i guess some just still find it offensive so i apologize. gay bi or not "white wedding" rocks. I am very passionate about movies i like. and when you said the eagle sucked it called for retaliation. but really i was not trying to pick a fight or offend you ziggy just defending the movie just as you defended bowie. friends?

ok i will explain this whole punctuation thing. i am very uneducated. i hated school and dropped out as a freshman in highschool.  does this make me dumb? not really. in fact i could probably teach you guys a thing or 2. yes yes i have bad spelling and punctuation. i admit it because frankly i do not give a flying shit about any of that stuff. if you wanna take cheap shots at me about it because its amusing then have at it. i am not offended by it because you are right. i know dick about commas and capitalization. english was my worst class and i never payed attention. however my scholastic achievements have never held me back. and i find it amusing that you guys seem to hold proper english typing in such an important light. as long as i am understood i could not give  a care less what anyone thinks about my typing. is that enough explaination?

Considered getting a WDTV and modding it with a firmware to allow it to play disc-based media off a compatible USB optical drive. However, the price is comparable to a standalone BD player with MKV support, which would also have the advantage of being able to play original DVDs and BDs without having to rip/decrypt first.

sadly you wont have menu support for bd discs. but dvd menus will work. the wdtv modders are always improving who knows maybe 1 day. a modded wdtv is the cheapest best alternative to an htpc running a media center. from organizing playlists to moviesheet presentation. but i am a little confused what you meant moth3r. if you are playing a disc from an external optical drive there is no need to rip first.  you would rip the disc for storing and playback from an external hard drive. though i see little need for an external optical drive when using a wdtv. most people would own a dvd or bd player already for playing discs. the grand purpose of a wdtv is for media playback from an external hard drive. rip your dvd/bd collection to a hard drive organize by genre or alphabetic folders however you prefer. now there are a few ways to use your hard drive with the wdtv. you can hook up 2 hard drives direct to the player. or more with the usb hub support that comes with the wdlxtv custom firmware. or you can hook all your drives up to your computer and stream media to the player through the use of a wireless router. this is cool feature because you can have a wdtv in every room of the house and stream media to any room in the house from your computer. also i dont know much about the wireless side of the wdtv but it does have support for apps like facebook and others. also the wdtv can be a separate torrent downloader. there are so many functions for wireless networking a wdtv live i dont even know what all it can do. there may be some newer media players that have these functions but i wouldnt know because i have never needed anything more then my wdtv. im starting to feel like a wdtv commercial but i just hate to see people go out and spend way more money for players that can not even compare to a modded wdtv. good luck guys.

thumbgen is the best metadata/moviesheet program hands down. i use it for creating moviesheets for all of my movies and tv shows for presentation on my wdtv. very easy to use and very flexible on the options. that was a rough quick sheet i made just to show you guys. not actually the 1 i will use on my wdtv. but you can see how powerful thumbgen is in metadata creation as well as nfo.

I'd love to use a program like XBMC, but there's too much about it that just pisses me off.

Can anyone recommend a program similar to XBMC that lets you customize sorting and actually change the metadata yourself instead of forcing you to stick with specific file names and metadata that it pulls off the Internet?

hey ash thumbgen does that. it can create metadata and nfo that you type in. here are some snaps i just made a sheet real quick for the whole bloody affair. 1 main thumbgen page, 2 moviesheet creation page, 3 metadata creation window, 4 the sheet i made.

david bowie is a washed up 80s wannabe rocker that never knew how to play an instrument. also hes so gay he makes fabio look manly. and furthermore the eagle was a good film. just because there were no gay rockers does not make it suck. but you know what does suck a chode? the fact that david bowie was allowed on a stage ever...... bowie vs the eagle= bowie 1 point for being good at stealing other rockers ideas. the eagle 10 points for using good dialogue and storytelling in a world full of fresh faced teen actors and remakes after more remakes. and oh yeah i love the jane fonda mullet bowie is sporting in that avatar. and so did his boyfriend. see no black bars in vlc. this tv is just weird i think. its a 4 year old 720p sylvania. not the best brand. i played with all the screen modes i.e. stretch, full, cinema, widescreen, ect  the only one that does not overscan is "widescreen" and it shows the menu with letterbox and the movie as it should be with letterbox no overscan. what do ya think? time for a new tv? here is the full 1280x720 snap.

i have completed my kill bill project and upon making the dvd in dvd architect i hit a minor annoyance. the film will be a 16:9 dar as usual meaning it will be widescreen with proper letterbox bars on top and bottom. i have set the project settings to 16:9 in dvd architect and the movie displays just right. however the menus also display with letterbox bars on top and bottom on my tv. it is a 720p hdtv.  strangely enough the menu displays properly in windows media player with no black bars. and the movie also plays as it should with the bars. weird anomaly though i think it must be the tv. i believe it will display properly on most tv,s since it does in wmp. anybody else have a 720p tv that does this? or use dvd architect and seen this issue? if i set my screen mode on the tv to "full" it stretches the menu to fill the screen but overscans a little bit and also stretches the movie.  no other settings in dvda seem to affect it. weird but oh well as long as it displays proper on everyone else,s tv i dont mind much. guess my first ot.com downloader with an hdtv will have to be the tester.

yep evil dead has been done and done again. matrix has been raked over a few times also. too bad there were no recurring characters kept in the "from dusk till dawn"trilogy. people have done "indiana jones" though i am not sure if there was a merging of those movies exactly. there have been a lot of edits with the "resident evil" series. yet i dont believe anyone has done a merging all 4 of the movies. that would be a pretty major merger. i have considered this as a project but the first movie really does not match up to the other 3 in terms of how it was filmed. the 3 sequel,s would blend pretty seamlessly. an edit combining the 2nd and 3rd " resident evil" movies called "biohazard" is done. i think it could be a potential fanedit merge project but would have to undergo some serious cutting to bring the 4 movies into a reasonable runtime. and the 1rst film would still feel a little oldschool compared to the other 3. this will be an edit i give consideration to. my next edit is set in stone and combines a trilogy in which all 3 movies have the same actors, same pace, same film technique, and the story line runs out flawlessly. a trilogy such as this is hard to come by and those factors have for sure been the driving force that made me want to do the edit. suffice to say it is not "pirates of the carribean" i can barely sit through 2 hours of pirates as it is.

hope i caught you before you bought a pch. but the best thing to do is plan on the mods before buying the wdtv. to learn about the mods and what can be done with wdtv go to http://wdtvforum.com/main/   and start reading. all you need to do the mods is the wdtv and a 2 gb usb stick. all the custom firmware and osd mods are free. so is thumbgen and thumbgen designer for creating moviesheet,s. i spent a little over $100.00 on my gen 2 wdtv and live is not much more. worth every penny spent and time invested. not to mention portability. i can scoop up my player and a hardrive of choice and carry it to any friends house and hook it up in 2 minutes. when i turn on the player i give my friends the remote and let them scroll through movies. each moviesheet lists a film cover, synopsis, and video/audio specs. and then when they decide on a flick and go into the folder you see a final fullscreen screenshot of my choice for the kicker. also note the pic above of the moviesheet does not show you the movie cover thumbs at the bottom of the sheet like the player does. in addition to seeing the sheet you see 7 thumbnails of movie covers which fill in the blank space at the bottom of the sheet. and then you just scroll left or right through the movie cover thumbs. buy a wdtv mod it and thank me later.

i have a modded wdtv hd gen 2. and i have to say it was worth it for the ability of the mods. the factory firmware is garbage. i have been a wdtvforum member for a while and most wdtv owners will tell you that pch has no chance holding up to the modded wdtv. dont worry about wd factory updates because they do not matter. the wdtv modders update constantly and make vast improvements. i have only had 1 mkv file cause a problem which was easy to fix by remuxing with an older version of mkvmerge. i have modded my wdtv to do everything i want. and the moviesheet features alone are epic. i have never had a problem with dts though it will not play ogm and that is the only file type i ever saw it not play. i would recommend getting the wdtv live version because it has even more functionality then the gen 2 model i have. once you know how to do the mods and make moviesheets you will be glad you did not blow $300.00 on a popcornhour. but dont buy it if your not going to mod it. the mods are easy to do once you understand them. i have my own personal backgrounds and screensavers. but i intend to get a live soon because there is a new mod being developed for the live player that is going to make the interface look amazing. also the live can be modded to support dvd menu,s. here is what a moviesheet looks like. i have moviesheets for every 1 of my 2000 movies. next i have to make them for my tv shows:) there are endless variations of moviesheets to choose from this is just 1 version. and with thumbgen designer you can design your own from scratch. bottom line wdtv modded kicks popcornhour,s lilly ass.

"the eagle"  i was very impressed with this movie. rarely do we get movies anymore not laden with cgi and fresh out of acting school teens who would not know shit about character involvement. also "hobo with a shotgun" have to say 1 of the best imitation grindhouse films since ever. so many low budget film makers have jumped on the grindhouse bandwagon in recent years and very few have pulled off anything worth a watch. "hobo with a shotgun clearly made the grade. and 1 other that comes to mind is "lonewolf samurai avenger" aka"blind wolf"  on another note a movie very few people know about that blew my mind was "mongol" a russian made retelling of the life of ghengis khan. i highly recommend this movie.

trilogy merging possibilities?
Time

i was wondering what trilogy/ film series everyone thinks could have a successful merge?   the extent of my fanediting knowledge so far goes about as far as cutting and merging clips.  i do like long films and for my next project i think i will do another merge. i have 1 trilogy in mind that has a pretty consistent theme throughout the 3 movies thus making for an easy merge of the 3 films. also it helps that i do not think anyone has made edits of these movies yet. so just for fun i would like to know what films everyone thinks can be merged? preferably trilogy,s that have yet to be put under the knife. the 1 i have in mind for my next edit will remain a surprise until i am ready to post up some screens. but another comes to mind just as an example. "feast" trilogy. these 3 movies are horror classics in my mind and despite the obvious budget drop on the 2 sequels i think with enough scenes cut these 3 could be merged into a 3 hr single film. so does any trilogy come to mind that you would like to see merged? it can be 2, 3, or even 4 movie series as long as they have a fair amount of likeness to be merged. another project i thought about is tenacious d. taking the pick of destiny and and adding skits from their hbo series into the film. many of the skits from the complete masterworks dvd,s could easily be cut into the movie extending the d movie into a longer funnier version. only hurdle i see with the idea is that the hbo skits are 4:3 and the movie is 16:9. so it would need a good conversion for it to work well.  who else has a merging idea?

rofl wow looking back it was a rocky road. but i have never been a quitter when it comes to hobby,s. thanks for posting those links imperial fighter. i altered the first post because it felt no longer relevant in the grand scheme of the thread.  i am very thankful for the help i received from various hobbyist,s on the truly confusing hurdles i had to overcome. and it seems to me i dredged up a lot of technical info that was not really listed in any posts on this forum or in the sticky,s  i have never done a tutorial thread before but i feel the forum could benefit from some more sticky threads on the subject of technical troubleshooting and fanediting standards. maybe a submit for approval thread. that forum goers can post how to,s  on. just an idea but i think more people would fan edit if they had a instructional bible to refer to.
