We finally have a release date for the new 4K/HD master of Star Trek: The Motion Picture - The Director’s Edition, releasing April 5th on Paramount+ with a disc release later in the year! Produced by the orignal team, this release is very exciting, and I can hardly wait. Obviously the new master will have different creative decisions with regards to how best update the old CGI, (from the trailer, some of it very nice and some is quite iffy) but irregardless, the general quality of the new edition should thoroughly exceed my old fanedit and will be the one to watch. This project will still remain up for posterity, but for first-time viewing, I will direct you to what hopefully will be the definitive edition of Star Trek: The Motion Picture.

The trailer looks awesome! I am still hoping to finalise my hybrid cut. There is even a possibility that the scene in Engineering with Scotty and Ilia might be in the outtakes as it looks like they found the soundtrack!

Can someone please spell out specifically what the differences are between the Director’s Edition and the Purist Edition? I’ve read the readme files for both, and absolutely nothing about specifics is given with respect to each’s build. There is only general ideas and concepts, but nothing to establish what content is either in or left out of either version.

TIA

The movie itself was the DE with a slight tweak to the opening credits to include Grace Lee Whitney, I think. I think it was more that it was composited using HD footage from the only existing version - the Theatrical Cut - where possible with maybe some colour correction. The new version coming out in September has had the new DE special effects recomposited from the original so everything should be crisper. I want to do a hybrid cut re-adding in scenes from the Theatrical Cut and the SLV so that should be a fun challenge trying to upscale and colour correct the SLV so that it doesn’t look too weird in comparison.

Thanks for the info. Once you start developing your hybrid, if you need a beta-watcher, by all means let me know. I’ve previewed several items in the past for various users and many were thankful for the feedback that I gave. If not, I understand. I look forward to your project.

I’ve started watching Friends for the first time this year on HBOMax. This is the first I’ve heard there is a cut/uncut version.
Since it’s HD, I’m assuming HMax is edited(?)

Not edited, they’re just the original TV versions. On the DVDs there were extended cuts with an extra minute or two for each episode. The BDs/streams use the TV versions.

That’s actually incorrect. Aside from the Pilot, of which I’ve seen three different versions of, there were several episodes during some middle seasons that had broadcast versions that were “super-sized” that ran about 5-7 minutes longer. These are what are released on DVDs… the actual broadcast versions. What’s in HD are any and all Syndication versions which have been trimmed down to fit more commercials in. The super-sized versions are been heavily edited to fit that mantra as a result.

Hey there Gang!!

I uploaded all of these to the squeedily spooch (the organ site - with closed membership)

JJPotter - the work of the gods!

Are these older ones, or newer ones?

v1.5 Edits

That doesn’t answer my question. I have no idea what the current release is… hence my question.

So basically, I’m in a no-win situation. I’ve had people gripe and complain since I first released my edits about how big they are. I find a solution and now I have gripes about how everyone won’t be able to view them. At what point do I get to decide how I want to release them and not piss someone off?

JJPotter…

Here’s what I got to say about things. F’ck everyone and what they say. You do you, as you see fit. Period. You are the one who is putting in the effort and not a single person has any right or privilege to either complain or make “heavy handed” suggestions about how you present the results to the world. In fact, anyone who does doesn’t deserve to get the links that you provide. They complain about larger file size? Screw them. They should get faster Internet. What if they can’t get faster Internet. Not your problem as they are getting a vastly superior product for free that they spent absolutely no effort in creating. They want another encode? Screw them. They can use handbrake to re-encode to another format and adjust whatever compression/file size parameters they see fit. They are benefiting from your efforts and have no right to say anything about it whatsoever.

I have enjoyed your efforts before you took a break and appreciate the results immensely. I am definitely looking forward to your updates, but that does not give me the right to tell you how to present your work. Nor does it give anyone else the right either.

Thank you for your efforts. It is not fair for others to complain or make you feel pressured for doing what you enjoy and for allowing others to see the fruits of your labor. Please ignore anyone who complains and add them to a “NOT TO GIVE LINKS TO” list and move on.

I rendered it in 720 less than 4GB and am happy with the results. I really don’t have the ability to seed this thing. I was hoping to find someone who I could mail it to who could seed it out there somewhere.

What about 1080p?

It would still have to fit on a DVDR. So at 1080 the bit rate would have to be much lower to fit. And considering that 30 min of footage is extras and not in HD there comes a point what is the plus of 1080 when there will be constant quality changes anyway?

I consider having the best possible resolution that matches the source for the material to be a plus.

I started watching these yesterday, and I think you’ve done a great job in terms of audio here, the transitions are seamless. However, I found the constant switch between 16:9 and 4:3 a bit jarring. Have you considered cutting the BR footage to 4:3 so the switch between BR and DVD footage is less noticeable?

I wouldn’t want that. Besides, from my understanding, the 16:9 are cropped 4:3 anyways, so it still would be rather noticeable

I would love to see these as they are available. I’ve ALWAYS wanted the HD of friends, but also wanted the uncut versions from the DVD’s as the cut material usually removes material for either new jokes or is able to show the reason why something was said/done later. I never did buy the excuse from WB that they just didn’t have the material in HD, that it was just “lost”. I hope that you are able to complete this project. If you need any help, I’ll be glad to do what I can.

OK…I’ve read through this thread, and can’t make sense of where this falls within what’s been released. There are the Theatrical versions and the official Extended versions. Where does this lie or how can it best be described? I see above that it’s considered theatrical but customized extended. Can you expand on that please?
