I have just watched it on my projector and genuinely have to admit that the HD and widescreen make an obvious big difference. So now you can finally watch the movie and give complete concentration on the scenes and plot… and would even say it’s not actually that bad a movie. It even deserves an extra star or more on its ratings. It’s not perfect by any means but I think everyone will find it a much more enjoyable watch now.

The cave sets look particularly really well made - now that you can see the full detail in wide shots and close-ups. Plus notice the placement of other main characters in the background of shots that you may never have been aware of before. Let’s hope you don’t have long to wait in the US.

I am not sure about this, but I think it’s a UK company that owns the movie so it’s probably cheaper to put it streaming in the UK. And if it makes enough sales it would then publish/stream it in the US.

… but anyway all I can say is I awoke this morning and noticed the message ‘Slipstream HD and widescreen’ all in the same sentence and still thought I was dreaming!!!

I know. You need the patience of an angel to deal with the amount of work involved. AI upscale of the laserdisc… then overlapping the DVD AI upscaled version… then colour correcting etc.

I know this may sound counterintuitive, but perhaps the DVD needs to be downscaled to the laserdisc and colour corrected to be more like the laserdisc - then AI upscale the one video and colour correct to to be more like the original DVD.

Either way an epic!

grafxuser your NTSC DVD upscales look nice. Whose NTSC release are you working with? I have two, Frontrow and Westlake, and both seem like a worse source than what your upscales seem to come from.

Not sure just purchased the NTSC version on eBay (DVD container/label are custom). But I am finding if I keep to the same resolution as the laserdisc it works better.

I am also needing to do 2 x AI upscaled versions. The reason being that one AI works great for strands of hair but terrible on faces skin, and another AI does vice versa.

I also viewed the stills on my projector and they look great 😃

If ffmpeg doesn’t work for the frame rate correction I have found the next best thing to use handbreak cli.

Also you may need to offset the start frame just incase it doesn’t seem correct.

I am having a play around in Topaz AI, so far the 3 main options seem to have good/bad points so need to do a few more tests. But I am guessing I may need to use different AI modules for different scenes.

Sadly I have just looked up the particular film distribution company who put forward the copyright complaint/issue to youtube and going by the web they still have distribution rights to it.

I am a little bit miffed since I had put the time, effort and a little bit of funding into edited some of the scenes to make them more clean and fluent on the audio and motion front.

It’s just one of those things I suppose 😦

Note from wikipedia…

The film is mistakenly believed to be in the public domain, when in reality it has a proper copyright notice in the end credits.

Hi Everyone,

Sadly I have had to put this on hold, since I have just had a copyright strike from youtube about a previous upscaled 16:9 version and it has been taken down. So I am guessing it would be the same for a new proper scale 16:9 version!

From my understanding this was free from copyright rules/laws but apparently not!

Sorry everyone 😦

DESPECIALIZED EDITION QUALITY CONTROL THREAD - REPORT ISSUES HERE

I have watched mkv V2.7 and the theatrical release on dvd and noticed there are some issues with the colour correction on some of the scenes in particular the first scene we see Obi-Wan Kenobi.

His skin tones are very similar to the background (sepia color) and R2-D2 blues is dull/dark.

The landspeeder seems to have lost it slight red tone. I am unsure if it’s most of the scene.
