Slasher Flicks Discussion Thread
Time

Guessing by your picture you're a fan of Scream. I personally really liked the original Scream movie a lot, as well as part 2, but couldn't stand the 3rd one. As far as a franchise goes it's probably one of the weaker slasher series since they weren't able to have a villain that spanned the entire series, since the masked killer is different every time. I have always really enjoyed the Halloween franchise, although without Donald Pleasance the sequels wouldn't have even been worth watching.

Something I'm curious about, and I hope I don't offend you because this is a genuine question, but how is the history of polygamy in the church (and with Joseph Smith specifically) viewed by mormons today?

I know that mormons don't practice this now, and I'm not accusing anyone of that, but I'm curious about how it is viewed by the church. Like, does the church say that it's wrong now but it wasn't back then, or do they condemn it altogether, even in the case of Joseph Smith? etc. etc.

No offense taken. We certainly acknowledge it as a practice. We believe it was divinely inspired for a temporary period of time, but that most of the time it is contrary to the commandments of God. We now oppose it, and any practitioner today is swiftly excommunicated.

EDIT: Oh, I should add that some have a hard time coming to grips with it. My wife, for instance, really doesn't like the idea that it was ever practiced. But historical record is clear: it was.

Also, it is worth noting that for a long time, the Community of Christ, formerly called the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (second largest, though substantially smaller, branch in the LDS movement) spent years denying it was ever practiced. I am not sure if they still do, but if they have changed their tune, it would only be a recent thing. But they honestly are pretty prone to gloss over our common movement's history while we are more willing to embrace it, the good and the bad and the ugly.

Thanks for the answer. I believe that for a time polygamy/bigamy was permitted, specifically during the times of the Old Testament, but I think that once the Christian Church was established marriage was restored to being between one man and one woman, and I'd be happy to go into more detail on that if anyone is interested. One thing I asked though was what the view of Joseph Smith specifically is. In 1 Timothy 3:2 it says that a Church leader (or "overseer") should be the husband of one wife, amongst other requirements. Joseph Smith had several wives, which is why I'm skeptical of his teachings about the Church. By the way, I'm sorry to keep bombarding you with a bunch of my own thoughts and beliefs, but I'm genuinely interested in theological subjects, and enjoy these discussions because I think we can learn a lot by hearing about each others beliefs. As I said before I have no intent to be rude, and want this to just be friendly discussion :)

But while this may sound very much like Protestant doctrine, we do differ in this particular: we do believe good works are necessary. Protestants have called us non-Christian for this, but we believe that we accept Christ's grace through faith on our part, and that faith and good works are tied together.

I consider myself a nondenominational Christian, and what I'd have to say is that I believe we are saved by faith alone. Once saved, good works follow because someone who is saved has the spirit, if that makes sense. Look at examples from the Bible. When Paul converted to Christ he had no good works under his belt; all of that came after he was saved from a desire to serve the Lord. Is this kind of what you meant by faith and good works being tied together?

Is the Hobbit prequel trilogy suffering the same problems as the Star Wars prequel Trilogy?
Time

Well, the Hobbit movies, while I'm not a big fan of them, did not make me want to throw up. The prequels made me physically ill, so I guess I'd say that the hobbit movies are similar to the prequels only in that they are both prequels and don't live up to the originals, although the prequels in my opinion failed much more than the Hobbit films.

THE PHANTOM MENACE - THEATRICAL HD Topper's Version (Released)
Time

I would love to see this. I've always said that Phantom Menace really matched the OT in more ways than the proceeding two prequels. I don't like the Phantom Menace, and I'll be the first to admit that it's bad, but it holds a certain amount of nostalgia for me. I didn't see it in theaters, but I was pretty young still when it came out on tape (which I believe was the theatrical version) and I watched that. Years later, I saw it on TV and I noticed not only the podrace scenes, but also some added dialogue as well. I for one am very excited for this project, and I think you're really doing a public service to preserve this film, no matter how much people (myself included) ultimately dislike the movie. I look forward to seeing your updates on the project Harley!

General Star Wars Random Thoughts Thread

I recently took my niece to Toys R Us and there were a ton of old school looking OT figures. Biggs Darklighter, Lando's copilot, etc. etc. The past 10 years all I've seen on shelves are stupid background "blink and you miss 'em" prequel character toys and I don't even think I saw one when I was last there, except for some legos based on the Clone Wars cartoon, which will now be entirely phased out for Rebels toys

**RUMOR** Original theatrical cut of the OT to be released on blu ray!!

Yeah, I'm just excited that all this crap about Fox owning the rights keeping the movies (somehow only the unaltered versions?) from ever being released again will be debunked. Idk, but I bet this is that rumo(U)r about the films going to digital this November. Probably the SE's, but since this doesn't look like an actual physical media release I'm not discouraged about Disney releasing the OUT before Ep. VII

Weed wouldn't explain the chanting though. Maybe if it was the first time he'd ever done it, but you say he does it regularly for a long time so I'd say he has some other sort of condition, and the weed may be bringing that condition out.

Either that or he's doing some other drugs as well.

Yes it's all very strange. I meant that it goes on for a couple hours at night, and it's been happening the past few nights, but the whole first month of school nothing was happening and all was quiet.

If you need to B*tch about something... this is the place
Time

I collect old Nintendo games, mostly NES and SNES, and it pisses me off when people ask three times what they're worth on ebay. It's getting to the point where Craigslist/Garage sales is the only way to get them for a reasonable price. Some people need to realize that it's nonsense to jack up the price of a lot by $20 because the label on Mario Bros./Duck Hunt has an intact label... And seriously, no one is going to pay $25 for Super Return of the Jedi for fuck's sake. It makes me so angry I can't even talk about it

He might have OCD. Some people with OCD compulsively chant until they feel OK enough to break out of the loop.

I'm positive my neighbors have heard me repeat "the stove is off" hundreds of times through the walls of my townhouse; long ago, prior to getting help, it was probably closer to hundreds of times per night. :-/

No that's not it, it's more just random things, and it all sounds very hysterical and weird. For example, I could hear his TV on and all of a sudden he started saying, "is that Ellen Paige?" over and over again. I did notice that the hall smells like weed so that explains the laughter. Normally I'd mind my own business but it's kept me awake the past few days and makes it difficult to do anything in my room. He didn't do this the first month so I'm hoping he got it out of his system but if it continues I'll have to break down and report him because I can't imagine a whole semester listening to this.

Sure, and I should add that from what I've seen of him in the day time he acts fairly normal, and it's in the evenings and at night that he does this nonsense, so I wonder if he's perhaps drinking or something. It's really obnoxious and quite strange, but also pretty freaky. It's late now and I can't hear him so I'll wait until tomorrow to report him to someone

OK, so I live in the single-room dormitory, so no one here has a roommate. One of the people in my hall is around 30 years old (no idea why he lives in the dorms, an apartment would be cheaper) and I can always hear him laughing hysterically and talking loudly to himself throughout the night, sometimes saying the same thing over and over again. I'm not sure if he's drunk or high or just plain insane. Also, I know for a fact that he's muttering and laughing to himself because I saw him walking down the hallway doing this. I would report him to the RA, who is like a 19 year old girl, but I'm not sure if that would be safe to do, especially not when he's clearly in some sort of strange mental state in the evenings. Any advice or similar stories?

Nightmare Scenario Special Edition
Time

I think I read somewhere, probably Digital Bits, that Lucas planned on replacing Yoda with the 2002 CGI model from the prequels. They did tests and everything but apparently it looked so horrendous that even George had to give up, or, more likely, he ran out of time and would've done it the next release if he hadn't sold it. That would've been a nightmare change for me. Also, if they added some terrible scene where CGI Yoda "saves" Luke from the Vader in the cave and has a CGI lightsaber battle with him would've made me very mad as well.

Ray Rice- American Football Star

I think I can speak for everyone here when I say that we agree with you that cops should go on trial for murder when they do so, and I also agree with you that cops get away with a lot more than any normal citizen could dream of getting away with. The problem is, you lump all of the good cops in with the bad cops since they wear the same uniform. It's no different than saying all Christians are like the Westboro Baptist Church, or that all Muslims are like the terrorists, or that all football players are like Ray Rice

The problem isn't that cops are violent racists, but rather the fact that violent racists want to be cops. Being a cop gives a person so much power and authority, and since cops that do wrong never seem to face consequences it's no wonder that so many violent power-hungry people want to be cops. I think that's why there are so many abusive cops in America, and I'm not saying they're a majority, but they do exist and shouldn't just be brushed off as a crazy few. To say that all cops are evil, or that it's a good thing when cops are killed is just ridiculous though, and only a Sith deals in absolutes. I won't deny that I get a little nervous whenever a cop drives by, but I've never been in a situation where I was singled out or humiliated by a cop for no reason. In fact, it's usually fake cops like airport security or regular security guards who are the ones always giving me crap for no reason...

4K restoration on Star Wars
Time

Well, if he was worried about dated effects then I think he would've updated the 90's CGI for the blu ray if that were the case. I honestly just think he was being stubborn by not releasing the OUT. I believe that the original Special Editions (and the "one last time" bullsh#t, even though he did release it again) were nothing but marketing gimmicks, and he used his whole true vision thing as a way to generate excitement about the SE's, then when everyone hated it he decided to shove it in everyones faces as revenge for not accepting them. All of the changes after 1997, and even a lot of the 97 changes, were so non-sensical that I honestly just think it turned into a big mind game by the time we hit the blu rays. That being said, I do think he was considering releasing the OUT. All because of that New York Times article where he was quoted as saying, "Unfortunately, the recent releases get priority over what we call the classic versions of things."

He didn't say anything about vision, and not even anything about, "it's on VHS." He didn't even try to deny that the OUT could be restored, although it was pretty dishonest to pretend that it was going to be some billion dollar project. It all came across as him teasing that the SE's come first, but the OUT will come second. Maybe it was just his diplomatic way of saying they'll never be released, but since he's so blunt about things I don't think he would beat around the bush.

There is another rumor floating around that before Lucas told off Star Wars, he already made more changes to the OT we haven't seen yet. And the next release from Fox will feature the new changes. Just a rumor, of course.

I think that Disney would know better than to release anymore changes, the backlash to the stupid beyond all human comprehension changes in 2011 was pretty bad. If Disney is distancing themselves from all the prequel stuff, I think they'd also want to distance themselves from the Special Edition.

4K restoration on Star Wars

I suspect that the rumors are true, especially with this 4K restoration. It's too bad that it appears there won't be time for a theatrical re-release of the OUT before episode 7. That would be so much fun, leading into the new trilogy.

Also makes me wonder what will happen to the other SE's if this is true. Are they stuck in their current quality or would Disney go through the trouble of recreating it using their new scans? Not that I really care. I'd like to just have the OUT and '97 versions.

Disney definitely won't waste time and money re-adding all the special edition CGI in 4k. I'm sure they'll restore the OT in 4k because, come on, it's Star Wars, but I see no reason as to why they'd waste time recreating terrible looking to begin with CGI, especially since 50% of people don't care and will buy it anyway, 40% of people put up with the SE's but wish they didn't have to, and 9% of people will not re-buy anything Star Wars unless the OUT is included. I think the Special Editions are stuck at their current quality since they've already had a blu ray release, I only wonder if the SE's will be included alongside the OUT if this is true.
