Can someone help me find a nice guide to editing blu rays?
Time

Hi there!

I've gotten tons of great tips from these forums over the past few years. I'm especially grateful to ADigitalMan's Guide to editing (is it really ten years old!?!) that I discovered a few years back.

http://originaltrilogy.com/forum/topic.cfm/ADigitalMans-Guide-to-MPEG2-AC3-Editing/topic/3444/

Okay, so I have a couple of questions.

1. Is there a similar step-by-step guide to editing for those who want to use blu-ray discs? If so, could you link me?

2. I still use the techniques described in ADigitalMan's guide to edit DVDs (I like to make "clean" versions of Game of Thrones and movies for my parents and stuff). Are there any guides with more up-to-date or easier to use software that you might recommend?

Thanks everyone.

Blending two SW edits together... Sound will no longer sync. Help?
Time

Hi guys,

I am a big fan of ADigitalMan's Guide to MPEG2/AC3 Editing, and I've used it many times to edit movies but there is one thing I just can't edit.

For some reason when I try to combine parts from two different Star Wars (A New Hope) edits the end result always gets screwed up.

I am attempting to blend Adywan's Star Wars Revisited with Harmy's Star Wars Despecialized into a version that I like. I have done similar things with Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi edits and it's worked fine. For some reason these two just won't mesh.

I break down both films into their respective video and audio files (.m2v and .ac3) plug everything I want into Womble. The problem happens when I export the finished product into an .mpg file on Womble. When I check the .mpg file, the audio is usually way of out sync. I thought this might have something to do with the GOP time code, but I've run it on all the files and no errors were ever detected.

I'd be happy to give any additional information. Any idea why this audio drifting happens?

Thanks!

Question about using subtitles in MPEG Video Wizard
Time

Well I've been using DVD Decrypter to extract the files from my DVD to my hard drive. I end up with a demuxed .m2v file for the video and an .ac3 file for the audio which I mess around with in MPEG Video Wizard. I also end up with a .SUB file for the English subtitles, but I have no idea what to do with it.

If I'm understanding correctly then there is a way for me to edit the SUB file so that the timing gets fixed (because I have altered the runtime by cutting out gratuitous sex and violence!), and then I would have to put the .SUB file back into the video somehow? And make it so that the video forces it to pop up when it's needed?

I am willing to put some time into this. The subtitled scenes are usually no longer than 2 or 3 minutes and so even if I had to type every line out myself it wouldn't be so bad. I just don't know how to edit the subs or put them back into the video when finished. I also don't know how to tell the video to "force" the subs.

Question about using subtitles in MPEG Video Wizard
Time

Hi there,

I have been working on an edit of Game of Thrones season one to make it "parent-friendly." I'm using the season 1 DVDs as my source. I've also been using the extremely helpful "ADigitalMan's Guide to MPEG2/AC3 Editing" and the resulting DVDs look perfect.

My problem is that there are some scenes that are subtitled because the characters aren't speaking English, and I realized only after burning the edited DVDs that the subtitles are not actually "hardwired" into the video itself. They are just sort of pulled from the subtitle file on the DVD or something and simply pop up in the scenes where they are needed.

I need to go back and insert the subtitles into the scenes where they're needed, but could anyone help me get started on this? I've attempted to figure this out on my own but I have no idea what to do first.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Harmy's THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK Despecialized Edition HD - V2.0 - MKV & AVCHD (Released)
Time

I've spent all day looking for the standard definition release of this (since I don't yet have a Blu-Ray burner or player) but everywhere I go seems to point me to some corrupted files. I've used Jdownloader to re-download parts the archive over and over but I always get an error message saying there's a problem with vob files 2 and 5. There's a torrent of the SD edition but there's only one (achingly slow!) seeder. Could someone PM me and maybe point me in the right direction?

Anyway, thanks for this! I've been wanting to do something like this for years, and from what I've seen this looks perfect! This edition is what my future children will be watching!

Joining vob files so that there's no 2-second gap in playback?
Time

Hi there,

I have a question regarding playback of edited DVDs. I decrypted a couple of different Star Wars DVDs and edited them into one DVD via DVD Shrink.

I used DVD Shrink simply because I didn't have to do any reconverting or messing around with changing the decrypted DVD files. I could just snip and insert scenes as I saw fit. When I was done DVD Shrink encoded my files and placed them in a ready-to-burn folder. I know DVD Shrink isn't really made for editing, but my edits are relatively simple ones: I just want to remove certain things here and there and add certain scenes from other DVDs.

My problem is that every time I try to edit something out of a DVD using DVD Shrink, there's inevitably a very noticeable 2-second gap in playback like the DVD player's laser is moving on to the next chapter on the disc or something. What I'd like to do is figure out a way to join my files.

I've done some research on this and I came up with a VOB file merger. I tried it but it just left me with one big fat VOB file that my DVD burner didn't know what to do with.

Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Help: looking for... Newbie looking for a cleaned up GOUT preservation?
Time

Thanks for this info. I'm not sure if I'm quite at the level to run scripts or convert things from PAL to NTSC, seeing as how I'm not really sure what scripts even are. The extent of my editing thus far has been very crude indeed, basically using DVD Shrink to put new scenes where old ones were. Oh, and I used some program to convert the GOUT into anamorphic widescreen but that's about it.

Of course I will keep this info in mind once I learn a little bit more.

Help: looking for... Newbie looking for a cleaned up GOUT preservation?
Time

Hi guys,

I apologize in advance if this is a dumb question, but I’m simply looking for a nicely cleaned up version of the GOUT trilogy that I can use to splice into the SE trilogy and make my own super trilogy.

I checked out the project index which listed such things as “**The Lucasfilm Pwnage Edition” and "**Ocpmovie’s “Classic Editions” but

1. I don’t know if these are the kinds of things which are available for free somewhere online

and

2. I don’t know exactly what kinds of changes they’ve made to the original film (if any).

Could someone tell me the names of some nicely restored GOUTs out there? Maybe PM me some links or something to help me search?

I appreciate your help.
