Info Wanted: Has anyone done any Unaltered Disney Classics preservations?
Time
They redid the animation for BEAST and LION KING because when you blew up the picture to IMAX proportions, obvious flaws and shortcuts in the original animation (mostly background characters and wide shots) were glaring. When it came time to issue the DVDs, they just used the IMAX versions of the films instead of the originals. Too bad. BEAUTY AND THE BEAST is terribly mastered as well. They just put too many versions of the film onto one disc leading to horrible compression artifacts.

The Thief and the Cobbler: Recobbled Director's Cut (Released)
Time
Yeah, I just went to show the trailer to a buddy of mine who digs animation but had never heard of COBBLER. I was bummed when it was gone. I ended up downloading it from rapidshare. The film is still up though, for now. I really hope this doesn't mean that Disney is coming after you. You've done a great service for the animation community and I'd hate to see it come back and bite you in the keester. If anything, they should hire you as a consultant for a REAL restoration. Good luck!

There is an unaltered DVD of MELODY TIME in R2. Sadly, they R1 version has Pecos Bill's cigarette business edited out. There has never been an unaltered release of MAKE MINE MUSIC. It's missing an entire segment called "The Martins and the Coys". Presumably, Disney thought they would offend hillbillies. As a native West Virginian, I could give a rat's patootie. I just want the original film.

ORIGINAL STAR WARS TRILOGY OUT 09/2006 BY LUCASFILM
Time
Sadly, I have to agree. I've bought my share of STAR WARS releases over the years, but only when the transfer or sound that I was getting was better than one I owned before. In this case, I would be buying a transfer that is miles behind the ones given to shit like VAN HELSING and AMERICAN PIE 5: RHUBARB PIE ALA MODE. I'm drawing the line. Sorry, George. This is one fan who expects a reasonable amount of quality for the money he's shelling out.

Dang it.

ORIGINAL STAR WARS TRILOGY OUT 09/2006 BY LUCASFILM
Time
Hey folks,

It's been a long time since I've posted anything and even then I wasn't overly participatory. However, the minute I read the news this was the first place I thought of coming.

Why?

Because for many years, this website has been the place to find people who are so dedicated to their love of these films that a good many of them have taken it upon themselves to spend their time, talents and money to make sure that anyone who wanted to see these films in the form they were meant to be seen could do so.

To all of the fine people who now feel as if their time has been for naught I say now is the time for a well-deserved rest, not a time for mourning. All of your work has allowed these films to live on through a dark time. Kind of like the monks who kept literature alive during the Dark Ages.

I am but one of the many who wish to say, "Well done. Thank you."

2 versions of EP3? this is out of control
Time
So are there actually any differences in the DLP and film versions of the movie? Just curious. I'm seeing the DLP version tomorrow. I've watched about a half-hour of the workprint (cause I'm a desperate nerd) but quit there because I was enjoying it too much and didn't want to totally ruin the experience. It's pretty damned good so far! Sure, the dialogue still bites for the most part, but the acting and pacing seems so much better than the last two films.

Yeah, its us OLD people George- thanks!

Going back to the original quote from Lucas, I feel the need to point out that when the original films came out, it wasn't just the "under 20" crowd who embraced them. People of all ages enjoyed the films and saw them again and again and...

The Prequels, whilst having a lot in them to like, just aren't of the same calibre of the OT. Lucas is a great storyteller, but he can't write dialogue. He just can't. His actors also have the unenviable task of performing on a bluescreen set, sometimes without the other actors in the scene. I'm an actor and I can tell you that part of what helps me really give a good performance is being able to play off of the environment and the other actors in the scene. That's part of why the Prequels seem so emotionally sterile. Kids don't notice things like that, but most adults do. That's why there seems to be such a generation gap when it comes to favorite trilogies. I guarantee you that history will not be kind to the Prequels, whereas the OT could last forever if ol' Georgie would just leave well enough alone. A good movie is a good movie forever.

Oh, no doubt there are prints floating around. The thing is, the film stock used at that time was notoriously prone to fading. If new safety dupes aren't made soon, STAR WARS as we knew it could truly no longer exist in a projectible form. Lucas himself has said that the original negs on STAR WARS are in horrible shape. Who knows exactly what he has lying around? I mean, I'm sure he has duplicates of the material but they're never a substitute for the original camera negatives. It's just a shame that he seems to have disowned the original versions.

Sorry it took so long for me to reply. My profile got screwed up and I had to create a new one.

My friend would love to get a hold of that print and preserve it, but you have to understand that he works for the government. There is so much red tape that has to be cleared before they accept that print and make a dupe of it. I'm sure that if Lucas caught wind of it he'd throw a holy fit and remove whatever prints that the LOC already posesses. It's kind of sad to know that preserving an original print is that close to happening but probably won't ever come to pass.
